The Oscar Ceremony for Satyajit Ray, March 30, 1992

The Oscar Lifetime Achievement Award given to the greatest of India's film geniuses - who has been called by Muriel Peters as "a defining artist of the 20th century, on par with the likes of Picasso." His favorite actress, Audrey Hepburn, literally did the honors. I have been quite disappointed with the existing TH-cam videos of this occasion as they ALL leave out the beautiful montage that the Motion Pictures Academy had prepared for the occasion (why would anyone in their right minds wish to jettison it??). Fortunately, I just located my own recording of it and thankfully digitizing is now such a snap. So here you go fellow Rayophiles - enjoy!

So wonderful to see this! What a lovely tribute. It makes me so angry that the Oscars no longer present these awards as an integral part of the main ceremony. I can't imagine a better opportunity to expose a massive audience to films that they've never seen before, and to inspire the next generation of cinephiles to seek out something new.

Ray died less than a month later. Hepburn died less than a year later. Two incomparable legends lost and still very missed.

I rarely make public comment but what angers me is that , the Academy doesn't ever recognise the due when it is required. Firstly this video ,the montage is shit , seriously, chosen carefully to throw light on poverty level in India and to sustain the myths about us. Why 'carefully' ? She speaks of Panther Pachali , Mr.Ray's first movie based on the book 'Panther Pachali". In India it was the best and the reasons were ,the funding was done by the Government as a loan ,no advanced editing mechanism, Mr. Ray apparently was the editor with perfect timing.The most powerful performance by the cast .
I don't know why international audiences always speak about Ray and say that he represented Indian culture and then only speaks of Panther Pachali.
We don't live like that but since Panther Pachali foreign filmmakers will come to India ask around for the slums , and travel there and shoot. Academy always recognise those.
I mean these days they don't even recognise the powerful performance of Joe Pesci in Irishman and awards Brad Pitt.
The worst song written by AR Rahman was Jai Ho. Please listen to his other songs and then decide.
