Again, all of it is from the film Dragonheart. The score was composed by Randy Edelman. Universal always had a nitch for providing great scores that perfectly describe the magic of cinema.
This was in 1998, which was the centenary celebration of the film history. That was also the year AFI made a prime-time TV special with its own countdown of the 100 great American films. This was also the start of the DVD era, and these specials were to promote sales of classic films on DVD.
I had totally forgotten about this, but this was the very first Academy Awards I'd ever watched and it was when I was 14. I distinctly remember this part more than anything else!
When i first watched this cut back in the 90s, i sad to myself „one day im gonna watch them all“ well, i started in january. Got to 1978 so far. Everyone should do this journey!! Its worth the effort!
OMG i'm so Glad i found this. I've been begging OSCAR (youtube official) to being this up and to no avail. This excerpt was here before but it was taken down (so devastated) So ty for loading this. Great Quality and sound too. You Rock!!!
And the future OSCAR for BEST PICTURE goes to... 1997: Titanic 1998: Shakespeare in Love 1999: American Beauty 2000: Gladiator 2001: A Beautiful Mind 2002: Chicago 2003: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 2004: Million Dollar Baby 2005: Crash 2006: The Departed 2007: No Country for Old Men 2008: Slumdog Millionaire 2009: The Hurt Locker 2010: The King's Speech 2011: The Artist 2012: Argo 2013: 12 Years a Slave 2014: Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) 2015: Spotlight 2016: Moonlight 2017: The Shape of Water 2018: Green Book 2019: Parasite 2020: Nomadland 2021: CODA 2022: Everything Everywhere All at Once 2023: Oppenheimer
This montage captures the best 2 or 3 seconds of each Best Picture winner, along with the stirring music from "Dragonheart." As others have said, it made me want to see some of the Best Picture winners I missed. The Oscar telecast did a montage for the 70th Anniversary and the 80th Anniversary. But no 90th Anniversary? I wonder why? We have to wait for 2028, the 100th Anniversary.
Because of #Metoo/#Timesup there barely any celebrating related to the 90th anniversary except for the opening montage. Everything with the Oscars now including what films are being nominated have to fill certain agendas and it’s ruining the art of film. No longer are these movies being won for merit!
It was interesting the audience only started a half-hearted clap with My Fair Lady in 1964, and then went full volume in 1965's the Sound of Music (They can't be that young not to appreciate earlier films? Or those two films must have been so iconic it drew a spontaneous response?). And have to clap for almost every show after that to be polite. I actually enjoyed seeing which movie received louder claps, though I realised later it is not necessarily for the better films. ;)
Good point. I think part of the reason why the clapping became louder was because most of the audience that year where actors who emerged in the late 60s and 70s and so they are not only clapping great movies but also supporting their friends who some of them where probably in the audience that year eg Nicholson, hoffman, Streep etc
Ten years later they showed this montage again for the 80th Academy Awards, adding 10 more films and having Jack Nicholson introduce it. The same Dragonheart music was used. No one in the audience applauded during the clip. (Btw, if you upload it, TH-cam will instantly remove it. That's why you never see it here.)
The 80th Oscars used a similar Best Picture montage with the same music and almost the same film clips, plus 10 more films of course. Jack Nicholson intro'ed the montage at the 80th. I can't upload it -- I tried, and it was immediately taken down.
@@montrealfilmguy Yes, I know the music is from Dragonheart, but this was a special mix between The Main Title, To The Stars and Draco. It does not sound the same in the soundtrack
This montage is what inspired me to watch every film that has won an Oscar for best picture.
No regrets.
me too. It took me 2 months. I already had seen half of them, so I had a head start.
Well, The Greatest Show On Earth might be a regret, but still...

If your wondering, the music is from Dragonheart.
well it seems to be a medley of many scores. If you know you'd be most kind to tell me which track.
Again, all of it is from the film Dragonheart. The score was composed by Randy Edelman. Universal always had a nitch for providing great scores that perfectly describe the magic of cinema.
Guess i'll check it out then.Thanks.
One of the best and most underrated movie scores of all time!!!
1:10 and sean connery is sitting in the audience
Twenty years ago, today. I watched it live, wondering what the next 20 years of Best Picture winners would be. Now, here we are.
The look on Bogey's face at 2.28 with that music playing in the background. Brilliant!!
One of the best montage ever !
They also did a "class shot" of all the Oscar winning actors that were still alive, from memory.
me too. i come back to this during challenging times
I’ve always credited this montage as being a major catalyst to me becoming interested in movie history.
this is why i always kept my VHS copy. I love the score so much.
@@montrealfilmguy yes I watched this for countless times since 1997. It inspired me to great montages well synchronized to stirring music since then.
I had been searching for this clip for years! I used to have on VHS and I often think of it. Thanks for uploading it!
This montage is why I have all the best picture winners memorized (at least up until the late 90s).
When i first watched this cut back in the 90s, i sad to myself „one day im gonna watch them all“ well, i started in january. Got to 1978 so far. Everyone should do this journey!! Its worth the effort!
I'm only 6 fims to finish the list !!!!.
Wait you even watched WINGS?!?
Dragonheart should have won an oscar for best musical score!!!! Its one of the most memorable, engaging, emotional scores of all time!!!

Sendra Kes The montage from the 71st Academy Awards was my favorite but this one is a close second.
What year was this montage

@@Blueeyedsoul1986 this one was 1997. Easy to tell as the last movie shown was 1996. ;)

This gives me the tingles ❤❤
Wow. They actually used to pick popular movies for Best Picture! If Forest Gump was released today it wouldn't even get a nomination.
This montage captures the best 2 or 3 seconds of each Best Picture winner, along with the stirring music from "Dragonheart." The Dragonheart music is "To The Stars," composed by Randy Edelman. It is perfect for this montage!

Great memories!
When the Academy Awards has its 100th show in 2028, they have to do this again.
Goosebumps
Some good, many bad but all fascinating samples of why we go to the movies.
I've seen just 22 of the movies in this clip!
I've seen every single one.
I've only seen 16, plus 9 movies after that.
What is the name of the part of the musical score that begins at 2:20?
I was told by a gentleman in the comments that it is from Dragonheart.
@@montrealfilmguy Many thanks.. I had been wondering. Looks like Jack Buchanan also made that comment below.. great music!
Actually the whole montage music is from Dragonheart.
Do you have the montage from the 71st Academy Awards where Chuck Workman edits the best moments of the 20th century?
No unfortunately this one is the only one i have.
Lol the 69 joke
Titanic will always be my favorite ever ❤️
Do you have the montage from the 80th Oscars?
I don't think so.
The 80th Oscars used a similar Best Picture montage with the same music and almost the same film clips, plus 10 more films of course. Jack Nicholson intro'ed the montage at the 80th. I can't upload it -- I tried, and it was immediately taken down.
Platoon came out the year I was born
BRAVEHEART THE BEST
Isn't this the score from Dragonheart?
I wish they hadn't clapped, so I could better capture the audio
someone in here mentioned the music or part of it is from Dragonheart. You might want to try Googling the soundtrack.
@@montrealfilmguy Yes, I know the music is from Dragonheart, but this was a special mix between The Main Title, To The Stars and Draco. It does not sound the same in the soundtrack
@@amigodavid27 well i guess that one is only from the Oscars. Perhaps audacity could remove the applauding like it removes noise parts ?
Oscars 90 failed because there was no new montage and it was mostly the #Timesup/#metoo show. 🙄
