Not really, I think it would be fine, I mean, setting up a system where the important or more desirable armors are in a universal size, while the most common might not fit your character, after all, you're more likely to want to sell them.
It would make for an interesting mechanic having to go to a Blacksmith to adapt certain equipment for you, even if that just Upgraded its stats.

About the "avoiding the main quest" issue, I like how Dragon's Dogma approaches it. The antagonist (obviously, a Dragon) do not attack you or the world (kinda), he just sits on a mountain and awaits for you, saying that "the choice (to challenge him) falls not to me (him) or to the whims of fate... it is yours alone"

The pre-Bombs-Fell world of Fallout never developed the transistor, but they fully embraced nuclear power, to the point where there are no wall outlets; everything that uses power has its own miniaturized nuclear power plant. Buildings have larger reactors to power all the building lights, and they can have their cores pulled to run Powered Armor, the single most energy-intensive device in the world, since it drains a core in minutes, when a BUILDING would have lasted centuries on that same core.

Invisible Barriers is a big one. The notion that your character can be stopped by an invisible wall, or an obstacle that wouldn't stop a toddler (like say, a 5cm tall barrier). From an immersion point of view, I prefer it when they make at least a token effort with the way they constrain your ability to explore. Like natural barriers (such as cliffs), or magical/technological wards. Something more substantial than "You can't go this way", or "Your knees aren't working properly around here for some reason".

I like Stalker's version of 'leveling up', because it is entirely linked to the weapons and clothes that you find progressing throughout the game. You don't get any points to spend, your character is static in that sense. You just find better gear as you move further in the game. This eliminates the grinding and tedium of leveling up, as getting better gear is equivalent of progressing to later levels. And even then the guns you get don't deal that much more damage, sometimes just a larger magazine, higher precision or faster reload will be a massive advantage.

On the subject of shops always being open every day, I do agree that it's odd, if not outright bizarre, that so many games where characters are supposed to feel "real" with schedules and such never take breaks, time off, etc.
Yeah, it'd be inconvenient to have to haul your goods elsewhere because a shopkeeper needed to take a day to recuperate or focus on themselves, but it'd be an opportunity for each shop to have multiple shopkeepers that cycle day by day, and then have some quests or parts of quests depend on meeting a certain shopkeeper or having enough of a reputation/relationship with a shopkeeper to get a new angle to use in a quest.
Like, imagine in a Fallout game you had a quest, and you could talk to a shopkeeper who takes over the shop 3 days a week while the "main" shopkeeper is off after their 4 days of the week, and you can talk to them and get a bit of information or buy a unique item that gives you a new method of resolving a particular quest peacefully, or avoiding negative consequences if you decide to resolve the quest with violence?

Problem with that is if these systems are big and complicated they are hard to control and it might all end up just feeling random to the player because it's impossible to keep track of everything.
Like it could work but RPGS would have to slow down and probably narrow their scope. Like what good is it to know who works at the bar in Megaton on Wednesday when you're just fast traveling around a giant world and probably don't even know what day it is? (or even spend enough time in Megaton to notice these systems at play)
Only really works if you give clear feedback to the player and the player knows how to interact with these systems (outside of trial and error)

It's the body's time to do general "cell repair", which includes the brain, which is most probably the explanation of what dreams are. Obviously you dont go broken leg on one night and full recovery the next day, but it is very noticeable for wounds like small scratches or cuts. Basically, when you get them, they might stay open the whole day you're awake, but when you sleep on it, it suddenly closes up and recovers.

Skyrim (and other TES games) is one of the worst when it comes to mechanics like theese.
Not only are guards all psychic - as in "ah, you got two rusty nails in your inventory." (looks at them) "This one is legit, but the other one you stole you scum!" - but shop keepers are too.
Every time you steal from one of them and not get caught, there's a chance that they magicaly discern - probably by reading in tea leafes - that it was you and send some thugs to "teach you a lesson".
The thugs are apparently psychic too, come to think of it...
Walk out of a town you've never been before and have just enterd for the first time in your life half an hour ago, three big muscled, small brained gentlemen are waiting for you as if you being there in this moment was in any way predictable...

The marker on the leader is nothing more than a game mechanic for the player's convenience.
Remember the quest with the redguards looking for a noble woman with a scar on her cheek?

Doing my first play through of Skyrim, and I did the quest you pickup in Whiterun where you have to find Nettlebane in order to retrieve sap from the Eldergleam to heal the spawn of the tree. When you bring Nettlebane back to the priestess who gave you the quest, she asks you to get the sap instead of having her do it, because she says, and I quote: “I don’t really want to touch that thing.” I just remember thinking, well at least someone was honest about not wanting to do some mundane task.

I love that VLDL's Epic NPC Man series demonstrates most of these in live-action sketches. Britt pausing her duel with Rowan to heal up by eating ten loaves of bread. Ben doing a bunch of side quests after agreeing to find an antidote for the poisoned Greg (who has "moments to live"). Poor Hamish the impoverished fruit merchant who's forced to pay 50,000 gold for the Skull of Raul that Adam sells him. And of course a host of other ridiculous RPG gaming concepts, like all female armour being essentially a chainmail bikini (poor Britt). 😆

To be fair on the healing sleep, in real life it does help, a person heals faster while they sleep(usually because of lack of activity). Of course this just makes natural healing go faster (a tiny bit faster) but at least there is some basis, unlike cover healing

For the shopkeeper thing, Underrail actually did this in an interesting way.
Each merchant had a list of things they would buy each day. So a guy selling armor might buy 3 leather armors, 10 pieces of scrap cloth, 5 accessories. And that's it. They won't buy anything else. So you can't just vacuum up everything and sell them whenever you hit a shop.
In fact in the big city in the game, there's a guy wandering around town who's carrying a ton of stuff complaining that he can't find people to buy it.

On the topic of NPC shops, Rune Factory 4 has this cool system where the shops hours are different based on if its a week day or weekend, and when their shops open, sometimes the NPC is upwards of an hour or so late to showing up. One of the NPCs even has an honor system, where random days he won't show up at his store at all, but leaves a bowl on the countertop for money. Interacting with it shows a sign that says "Take what you need, I respect the honor system." and brings up the normal shop interface. It's really cool. That guy could be going on vacation and still be making money.

Kingdom Come Deliverance has solutions for most of these problems. Can't infinitely eat, quests expire, people die if not helped in time, you can sleep in random beds (but people can catch and kick you out), healing mechanisms are fairly realistic, crafting isn't as easy and gamebreaking, vendors run out of money, shops close up for the night, you can steal from their inventory by breaking into the building, they only buy relevant goods for their profession, dark caves and mineshafts are genuinely dark and you have to bring your own torch, activities only level up the relevant skill.

  • @jwdell5

I’ve always thought it would be cool if there was a game that was designed with multiple missions presented at once, but the player can only choose one mission and the others would go away. And then based on that decision, the next set of quests would be different based on which quest you chose. You could have a really diverse set of quests and story direction and it would also create a huge sense of replayablility to go back and pick different quests to progress differently. I’m sure there are games out there that already do this, but still wish more games would adopt this idea and not just use it as a marketing tactic....looking at you Cyberpunk 2077 👀

Although that idea sounds very appealing, it's incredibly difficult to create such a game. The game might end up buggy as fck, for example the Fallout 4 quest where you may betray the institute and start a "war" between them and your minutemen it can happen that you can't continue the main story at all, I had to reload a save I did 7 hours before to undo the bug after I realised it was a bug.
Also if the game doesn't end up popular enough then the resources would go to waste and it'd be a mayor loss for the company.
Btw if you like consequences after your decision you could try the Dragon Age games.

    • @JMcMillen
      @JMcMillen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@infinityscorner8473 It actually shouldn't be that hard to do. You start with your world populated without quests, then when someone starts one, the appropriate locations are then populated for the player to explore. When you finish, then the next set of quests become available. The issue with games like Fallout 4 is that you can be running multiple quest lines at the same time, which may not play nice with each other under certain circumstances. In this case you can only follow one main quest line per "chapter" and it's outcome determines the available choices for the next one, where you only get to chose one.

Ooh, I remembered another thing that always feels like a missed opportunity in RPG games. The fact that in many games you can tell what the people are called before you have been introduced to them. The trouble, of course, is that a game like Skyrim has tons of NPCs and it's much easier to make many NPCs than it is to make memorable characters. But still, I would've preferred not to know Nazeem was Nazeem until I'd spoken to him. And while we're at it, allow my character to introduce themselves too.
Games that did this right (IMO) include VTM:Bloodlines and STALKER CoP. No way of telling who someone is until you talk to them.

I went to the house too early and triggered a different event.

I'm surprised how many of these aren't issues in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Yes, the game has its own quirks, but it manages most of these issues incredibly well and in an immersive way.
Something I found out recently, after hundreds of hours spent in the game, is that shopkeepers sell the goods you sell them, thus making a profit. So the next time you visit an armorsmith after selling all the stuff you looted off bandits or cumans, they'll have more money than previously.
There's a reason it's my favorite RPG thus far!

About the food thing, I think the Horizon series does it a tiny bit better. First of all, there are two types of "healing items", food that is cooked previous to combat and gives you special abilities (extra concentration for 3 minutes or 15% more HP) and medicinal herbs which give you a little bit of HP each time.
You can go to your inventory to re-arrange weapons and stuff, but you can't eat or drink potions there. If you want to heal during combat, you press the up to eat herbs or down to drink potions or eat food. But enemies don't stop attacking you, so eating herbs is ok, but drinking big potions is near impossible in close combat.

Another unrealistic aspect of the Legend of Zelda series is Link's ability to stay awake for multiple days & nights in games like Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker, & Twilight Princess, or he only sleeps as a result of the story (most games start with him waking up), getting knocked unconscious, put into a form of suspended animation (OoT & BotW), or is entirely optional like in OoT 3D & Majora's Mask (Link can fall asleep by listening to Anju's grandmother's stories)! Mind you Majora's Mask introduces the All-Night Mask which allows Link to remain awake to listen to the stories told by Anju's grandmother, which explain the Four Giants & Skull Kid's back history in addition to rewarding Link with Pieces of Heart, but still this Mask really is only usable in Majora's Mask & its remake, and only prevents Link from falling asleep out of apparent boredom!
In addition to sleep, answering nature's call in most games is either non-existent, left either vague, restrooms and/or sewers exist but act more as a level or just another area to explore and/or fight in, played for laughs, or you end up with only one toilet or restroom facility within the entire game which in the Zelda series, results in a side quest where you must provide the hand (??? in MM & MM3D) or ghost hand (Phoeni in Skyward Sword & its SSHD) with some paper based item that is basically a I NEED TP 4 MY BUNGHOLE joke inspired by a Japanese ghost story! Of course, No More Heroes gave us the going to the restroom is how you save in-game which, to be honest, is a hilarious explanation for saving mechnic that for me anyways kinda works as both are routine activities that can be tedious but still necessary & using the restroom before a big boss fight does make practical sense, especially considering how over the top NO MORE HEROES games can be at times!

Oddly enough, a number of Zelda games have places that are closed at night, though admittedly a lot of the Breath of the Wild shops are 24/7.
