  • Strandibrough lies off the north coast of Fetlar, separated by a narrow channel with high cliffs and strong tidal waters. On the island the remains of about a dozen small buildings and a wall can clearly be see among the dense vegetation.
No detailed survey or excavation has been conducted of Strandibrough as far as I know. It is thought to be an ancient monastic site. One of the buildings is notable as it has a large white stone at the end of the room. Perhaps this was a place of worship? Or the main hall? It is certainly an atmospheric and mysterious place.
The tune is called ‘Da Day Dawn’ and thought to be one of Shetland’s oldest tunes and is traditionally played on Yule morning.

Thanks to Pete Sawford for the trip out there with the boat.

I got slipped ashore from a small boat and then climbed/ scrambled up the steep slope, 1min 16. some loose bits of stone to watch but it is not too bad, I was wearing welly boots that weren’t ideal for climbing up. You see the slope, bottom left in the drone footage at the beginning of the clip. th-cam.com/video/JYWEfhwWemI/w-d-xo.html
