I was trying to figure out why this is so powerful. Like maybe it's just the switch from goofball to sincerity. Or how foes come together to be friends when it gets real serious. But this got me emotional as a kid and still gets me at 50. James was a real powerhouse. That's why this is still so powerful.

I also love the scene where the burglars take the general and drive him into the pond and the rossco and enis are trying to find bo and Luke.
Enis almost crying you can hear pain in his voice begging rossco to help him then you hear with sadness“I can’t enis… I can’t swim.” A scene to show that they do indeed respect the duke boys and don’t in fact hate them.
Or the scene later where he has to tell Jesse that his boys are “dead”

One of the most emotional, and best scenes, from the entire series in my opinion. James Best is great here as Sheriff Rosco, who begs for help from the Duke boys to save Boss Hoggs' life. I know it's just a scene from a TV show and that they are characters and not real people, but this really moves me every time I watch it. A great scene!

For me, his greatest performance is in Sam Fuller's 'Shock Corridor' (1963) in which he plays a patient in an insane asylum--his switching from madness to sanity and his soliloquy about his life really show his acting chops.

He certainly was in this scene. Mr. Best & Sonny Shroyer also gave wonderful performances in "Ghost of General Lee." These types of moments are gems throughout the series. While the show is often dismissed by many as "corny" or not worthy of airtime when I see the immoral vulgar filth that is marketed to adults & children today by Hollyweird in the name of "entertainment" I really began to realize how much of a wholesome, family-friendly show this is. Sad to say, but the days of quality family-friendly entertainment like 'Dukes" are probably long gone.

Saddest part of the episode. Nothing sadder than seeing Rosco cry. When Boss cries he is like a spoiled kid throwing a temper tantrum. Now when Rosco cries it seems more sincere, underneath that hard shelled by the book county sheriff has a tender heart, especially with his dog.

James Best started his career in 1950 (according to IMDB). He did many different
genres of movies and tv shows. Western, Dramas, Science Fiction, Romance and of course
Comedies. He did 3 Twilight Zone episodes. The Grave/Jess-belle/Jeff Myrtle Bank.
People sometimes forget that many actors of that time especially in the 50's and 60's
were multi talented including dancing and singing. He had 188 credits!!
