This was great advice, i have never pulled apart any type of engine or carb before, followed the step by step instructions from the video and started stripping my lawn mower that has not run for 4 years. Didnt know what i was doing but carried on regardless, i had nothing to loose because i went out and got a new lawn mower 4 years ago. Anyway stripped it down, cleaned it up, changed the oil, sharpened the blade, put it all back together. Waited for 5 mins then desided to pull the cord. To my amazement and joy it started first time. I now have two lawn mowers. Thank you for your great step by step instructions. I also didnt need to get a new gasket, old one worked just fine. Top job
Had mine for 27 years, still running, steel chassis rusted after 2 years, put an older aluminium one on. Replaced carb as mouse eaten primer button. The 3.5 continues to work!
Thank you Mower Man! Mine was running 10 mins then dying. Sorted a new bulb, plug and filter. Running great and now my boy can help me with the lawn! ;)
Excellent Job Mower Man easy to follow your instructions , just picked up a 2002 Murray Briggs 3.5 Classic, cut a lot of grass. A kid and his dad bought it for $10 and flipped it to me for $35. It runs and cuts grass very well I might add, lol. Thanks and best with your repairs.
Hi, big thumbs up! Just bought one today based on your video thinking I can fix a broken one. Rusted cable in the sleeve, rusted and stuck flywheel brake, no spark in plug, carb springs disconnected etc. All good now and runs great! Was well worth the £20 and with the lockdown it was 2 hours well spent.
I have recently inherited one of these that's about 20 years old, can I ask do you store fuel in it over winter or just use fresh each spring? I'd like to keep it going as long as possible. Thanks
@@robzaphy Yes, usually just run it the tank down with the last mow of the season. Still starts first pull. Keep plug the plug clean. Change the oil too!👍
I have a 3.5 Clasic I got in Maryland late 80s. Only used it a couple times and had it service 8 yrs ago but let step son and son in law use it. Big mistake! They said it wouldn't stay running and had no oil. It was so clean they didn't see any oil on the dip stick. We know who the dips were. Anyway been checking out your channel and learned a lot. Did a quick service and got it running again. I probably could use a new diaphragm. Mine doesn't have a primer only manual throttle. Tach got it at about 3100. Now to get my 500e up and running. Got it free from don in law in a trade for an extra one I had that ran, 22 inch, FWD with a mulcher/bag. Sounds clanky and may need low noise muffler. Adjusted by using your videos specs. Can't get specs anywhere and we know about customer service at Briggs.
Hi.I got this B&S 35 classic here in NZ from my brother in law who saw got it at a garage sale abandoned. Your youtube channel helped a lot, simple and good instructions. Thanks a lot as I managed to bring it back to life.
It’s always wise on every service of these classic engines to replace the gasket and diaphragm regardless if are they are running fine , they are dirt cheap and they are the main thing that goes wrong on these. I sold a mower once was running fine the person contacted me that it wasn’t running right, I picked it up new D&G job done, from that day I always fit a new one. Also when I service a mower in the main I clean the carb, because the mowers can be running ok but there can be muck in the bottom of the tank or bowl. Better safe than sorry🙂👍
Your comment is the kind I dislike the most, it makes assumptions that just a little bit of research would refute: a) They are NOT dirt cheap. b) They are NOT readily available which makes them even more expensive. ...and yes I realise for service centres this is NOT the case, but I am not a service centre except for my own mower.
Inspiring. Going to look at your website. Ex car mechanic here looking to get back in a trade and have decided to venture in a small engine repair business. UK Based 😀😀
Thanks Paul did them it's wired because when I changed the carb and tank it still did the same thing with a carb that runs as it should on the other mower, thanks anyway, love the vids you and Martin best out there,
Well I've just used this video to help service my 13 year old 450 series that looks exactly like this 35 classic. Seems to be almost exactly the same. Thank you 👍🏼
Some years ago I bought a S/H Lawn King for £20, The fella said it was ready for a service but I thought i'd try it first, I got half the lawn done when I made a strange noise, I let go of the bar but it stopped dead, Siezed!, There was no oil in it! 😬 I let it cool down for ten mins and put some oil in and tried pulling it over, Wouldn't move, Gave it half an hour and tried again and it pulled with a bit of force so I pumped the purge and blow me! It started first pull but with a puff of blue smoke! Every time I use it now there's a puff of burning oil smoke but it always starts first or srecond pull!! Seems these little four strokes are bullet proof!! 👍😎😎
I've got an old 32 classic yellow I'm needing to service mines and a paint job, it's a great little mower but it's reving up n dwn and blowing some dirty smoke, I'll try a oil change but it's definitely not running as it should. Your video's are great thanks.
Thanks mower man, I was trying to start the classic 35 'world', it would start and then immediately cut out! It has a throttle cable that comes around the carberator and up to handle, different from the one in your video!
Great Video - on mine the fron silver bolt came off ...and the front bolt ...I took the missssing ones off an old Sverighn ..but the silver clip doesnt want to scre in easily ....what does it do ?
Ha, got a 40 (seems very similar to the 35) noticed that fuel tank was wobbling about. Had same problem. Front bolt had worked loose and gone missing and rear bolt as just hanging on. Tightened rear bolt which seems okay for the time being but would like to get a replacement front bolt to be safe. Trouble is I’m not a lawn mower repair bloke and don’t have a drawer full of spare bits! Any idea on a suitable replacement or where I can source one from? No idea what part number it would be…cheers
Can you tell me what size bolts i need to hold carb and fuel tank to body please, have this same model and just need to be able to fix these parts together.

Do you sell a replacement Rev cable for this model? Currently repairing my dads one the cable and red handle all loose no tension on the cable? Also bolts missing for the pull cord housing could you point me in the right direction?
Can you advise please how to adjust the height of the front wheels of my 35 Classic Petrol Lawnmower recently acquired? Unlike for the rear wheels of the mower and as in your video there are no handles to adjust the height. Many thanks
I lost the screw that block carburator to the block-motor. Maybe someone can tell me dimensions? I think it's about 55 or 60 mm long, and 6 or 8 mm in diameter. I mean the black screw that in video you unscrew with your fingers. can you help me?
Great video and demo, got the same mower and gave it a service. I took off the fuel tank to clean it all out and I can’t put the springs back how they should be, can you help please?
I have just bought one of these for 20 quid it starts and I'm going to try and service carb myself as it sounds sluggish but I'm wondering about paint the red is peeling an I think once painted it will look great . What paint do I use . Thanks
Andy Kingwell I'm no expert at painting them to a look at retro restore channel. Martin spray paints them. I'djust husr hammerite red smooth but most times I just sell as is
Hi Paul! Thanks for the informative video, its really helpful! I have the exact mower and I am going to service it this summer, it has always been a pain to start up and get going (even after being serviced by a company!) However once its warm and been running for a few minutes it starts so effortlessly. Any thoughts on this mate? It does on occasion rev high and low which you may suggest the diaphragm and gasket may need replacing, it is intermittent though but for the sake of a few quid ill change it. These engines are work horses and dont stop! Thanks again for the great videos! :D
@@MowerMan Hi Paul, I finally figured out why my mower is a nightmare to start first time. The primer bulb was working and sucking fuel up but it was not squirting it out, it was all in the bulb and backing up in the tube into the thank. Once i got the primer bulb off I could see a very small bearing in the carb that looked like the route the fuel should squirt through, so i gave it a bit of a nudge with a fine needle to loosen it up and job done!! Primer bulb back on and it then started sending the fuel through, I imagine this bearing got seized up somehow?, Have you ever had this issue in your time working on these mowers? Prior to me finding out the cause, the mower had alot of TLC including new diaphragm and gasket, front head gasket, inlet and exhaust vales cleaned out of carbon, crankshaft inspection, blade sharpen, oil change, filter, spark plug and a good old clean. She looks brand new and runs like a dream :D. Thanks again paul!
@@MowerMan No worries, thank-you! Only downside now is because the mower is so clean and sharp, its cutting and picking up the grass like wild fire! I have to stop and empty the grass collector a lot more often than before 😂
Hi Mower Man, Many thanks for your fantastic videos. I have a Classic 35, had it for at least 20 years, starts first pull as long as I use fresh petrol ! Anyway it needs a service, not changed the oil in all that time. It certainly needs new cables and springs for carb idle regulator is it called? Where should I order a KIll switch cable from complete with outer casing? Where should I order the carb idle regulator springs from? Lastly, the diaphragm and gasket kit from? Many thanks.
Hi there,I have the self propelled model of this machine and has lack of power in at have resorted to pushing it.Any ideas what is wrong?great videos and thank you

It does on occasion rev high and low which you may suggest the diaphragm and gasket may need replacing, it is intermittent though but for the sake of a few quid ill change it.
These engines are work horses and dont stop! Thanks again for the great videos! :D
Make sure the primer bulb is working and replace diaphragm and gasket
@@Verstrappen That's very interesting a great find. Thanks for sharing! Happy mowing
@@MowerMan No worries, thank-you! Only downside now is because the mower is so clean and sharp, its cutting and picking up the grass like wild fire! I have to stop and empty the grass collector a lot more often than before 😂
Brilliant video. Just picked one of these up and I can’t pull the whole mower backwards seems jammed any ideas? Thanks

10:43 looked like you blew that cloth into the machine
I've taken my mower apart but the small spring looks quite loose - is that right? Help!
Great video. I’m going to give mine a service. We were gifted it. When starting the pull cord doesn’t return. Any ideas?
Night need a spray of wd40!
Hi Mower Man,
Many thanks for your fantastic videos.
Just to add its a Mountfield Mower.
Hi Jiffy the springs are called governor springs. You can find these parts at the website repairlawnmowersforprofit.com/recommended-products/
Is there a way to keep it in idle when letting go of the handle if you need to manouver it between cutting again?
No
