Cleaning brushes is one of my big uses for mineral spirits. I have managed to 'save" brushes that would be a lost cause without it. I also use it to thin oil based exterior poly for spraying. A big time saver if you have a lot to cover. One other use, which is outside the scope of your channel, is as a degreaser for dirty engine parts... just in case you need to do vehicle maintenance one day.
Thanks for sharing!! I've heard of cleaning garden tools and engine parts as well. Mineral spirits is fabulous stuff!
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 ~10~15 drops from an old eyedropper down the throat of carburetor will help wake up a lawnmower from winter hibernation
I even mix into gas tank about 10 %..
@@aaronsmith5433 That’s some good information right there! Thanks for sharing your tips!
Good job Bethany!

Hello Bethany and Happy New Year. Does mineral spirits remove the varnish? Or reduce the excesive gloss of a finish? Thanks a lot
Hi there! Mineral spirits won’t remove the varnish. It will reduce the gloss on the finish.
So glad I needed to know more about mineral spirits.
Nice cabinets
Thanks!
how long after you send the furniture you apply the mineral spirits?
Nice video thanks! ...I just used it to clean some pigmented stain oil from my brushes and it worked great!...My question is now how do you deal with all the "used" mineral spirits...that's always been my issue with using this stuff? Thanks for any suggestions!
Thanks for watching! Here's a great article on how to dispose of mineral spirits AND how to reuse it even after using some of it.

Would this work to remove a Minwax stain pen streak from leather furniture? I am tasked with fixing this accident on a very nice sofa. It's about half the size of a pinky nail and noticeable.
I have no idea. I have not used mineral spirits on leather before.
I use mineral spirits to thin my polyorthane.
It helps to give you that more glass finish.
That's interesting. I've never heard of that before. How much do you thin it? Do you spray your poly on or brush it on?
Hi! I'm using Ordorless Mineral Spirits *Substitute* by Klean Strip. I was looking for an alternative to 70% isopropyl alcohol, which I normally include in my DIY Dawn Power Wash.
The smell of the alcohol negatively impacts my allergies. So, I combined 5 teaspoons of Dawn dish soap and 1 teaspoon of the ordorless substitute into 500 ml of water. Is this combo safe to use on dishes? I tried vinegar before and didn't like the results.
Thank You 🙏🏽
What do you think about the Klean-Strip Green brand of mineral spirits? I'm curious how it holds up to the "non-green" mineral spirits.
As noted in this video I really love this brand. It's the only brand I've used of mineral spirits. I've had no issues with it's performance.
One thing to keep in mind folks is that you should NOT dispose of any leftover down the drain. You have to throw it in the garbage or better yet, take to the proper disposal at a landfill. : ) I remember my dad (old school) back in the day dumping this stuff down our drains in NYC. Oh my lord! We know better today.
Solid advice! Thank you for adding your thoughts.
Can I use it to clean my makeup brush?
I would not use mineral spirits on your makeup brush. It’s not meant to come into contact with your skin. I use my face wash to clean my makeup brushes.
Can this be used for removing wax from waxing equipment in salons ... ??
I'm sure it could
I just moved out of a state (California) where Mineral Spirits is OUTLAWED!!! Yep, you heard that correctly. I had to just assume that I would have to buy a new brush for each project.
Oh wow!!! That's a new one. I didn't know that. This stuff works great to clean brushes.
Really?! I just bought some klean strip mineral spirits from home Depot. I'm in California.
Petroleum products. They hate oil companies.
We sanded our floors and applied an oiil based stain, we didn't evenly pick up excess so when it dried we applied a second coat of stain yet the floor has spots where it's tacky. Will minieral spirits help pick up and even out the stained floor? What type of sponge or applicator would you reccomend to apply the mineral spirits?
I have the same question.
Great video, I have an extremely old antique mason jar that has been collecting God knows what that eventually broke down into what appears like a black tar. I was considering using this stuff to clear that out, have you tried it on anything like that? Its almost the same texture and thickness of thicker paint or a latex glue.
I have no idea. If you don't know what's in the jar then I have no idea if mineral spirits would clean it.
I’m going to need your help. I want to refinish furniture and also learn how to create distressed furniture styling so please create a tutorial for that. I am retired and may need to find an alternative source of income coming out of the dental lab business that I closed up last summer when I sold my house that had s lab in it and now bought a house and am not planning to have another lab. I haven’t ventured to look for a part time job and I think I would enjoy making custom design painted furniture, including artsy designs with colors and patterns. This could be the new career choice for many newly retired seniors and you will leave a legacy of appreciation by others who will seek your craft for themselves.
Check out this other tutorial I did on How To Distress Furniture:

So, "green" mineral spirits works for cleaning stuff, uses 1 through 4, but mixing the green crap will only turn oil based finishes (polyurethane in particular) into a mass of curdled goop. If you want to thin oil based finishes, use the petroleum or alcohol based thinners. Read finish mfr's instructions for which thinner to use. usually in the clean up section of label.
I'll have to try the odorless mineral spirits. Thanks for always sharing your knowledge. Wishing you continued success...
Thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate it!
WOUAOU, you are very very very beautifull. I speak French, sorry. Où puis je trouver de l'essence minérale please, thank you
Thank you for the nice compliment. I purchase my mineral spirits at Lowes, Home Depot or Walmart. Or here on Amazon: amzn.to/3RnceE0
Isn't mineral spirit highly flammable?
I'm into furniture flipping and everybody uses it to clean or polish the wood. Is it not dangerous cos of catching fire if there is one?
Seriously lol I don’t want my bannister spindles to spontaneously combust !
Thanks😚..because i do a lot arts & craft. And I can never get my small brushes clean😤
You’re welcome 😊
whoa my childhood fantasy is coming to life with this babe and that outfit. What a smokeshow. phew....
Will it clean latex paints?
Yes it will!
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 Will it safely remove dark wax that is on Latex painted cabinets without stripping or dulling the paint?
Hmmmm... When I refinish or even have finish sanded a new hardwood floor, I always use a water damped rag to wet the wood and show the client what a natural finish (my favorite) would look like. Per #4, I think mineral spirits would work similarly perhaps. But without the wood "raising" from the water. Going to try it out on some oak in the shop and test it. Thanks for the idea!!! Thanks for the video!
I think you may be correct! I don’t find it raises the wood grain much like water does. You’ll have to let me know what you find out.
I did try it on some white oak I had out in the shop. It brought out the grain and colors wonderfully. It did take a little longer to dry perhaps as there was a slight sheen even a day later. Surely not a problem for a poly coat or even stain then poly. And now that makes me wonder about the possibilities of it being a pre-stain conditioner. May test that some day. 😃
Thank you for all your insights Bethany. We can always learn something from listening to those around us. And your personality makes your videos a joy to watch. Keep them coming!
Would it be safe to remove car sticker's?
Stickers on an automobile?
You could sure use a fireproof cabinet to keep all of your stains and other flammables in.
Luckily I don't have too many flammable products at one time in my home.
I just saw it at Walmart. The container isn’t as big, maybe half the size but, it’s there.
Oh that’s good to know they carry it. I myself prefer the larger container. I go through it more than the average person but it’s helpful to know they carry it as well. Thanks for commenting!
Yikes that’s what amber threw at Johnny’s nose? Must’ve hurt so bad
Dont clean your floors with mineral spirits if you have a finish on it. I don't think thats common though
Correct! It could remove a finish. Vinyl floors are okay.
Those Klingon brushes must be rough, no?
They are the best and most durable brushes I work with by far.
Wow you're gorgeous 😍🔥
Thank you!!
Oh MADELINE, je rêve de toi jour et nuit même les yeux ouverts, tu occupes mon esprit au point où je suis dans l'incapacité de me concentrer. You are Miss Univers? Oh...
Great video thanks so much for the info. Also I don't know who needs this, but I'd like to bless anyone since you've blessed me. Jesus christ loves you and gave his life on the cross so we could live and have a relationship with god. All we have to do is recognize our sins and ask for forgiveness and believe in jesus christ his son.
Does it burn through fabric? I noticed holes in your jeans
No but it does burn my eyes a little to read lame comments like this
Why do I get the feeling she pours all that down the drain afterwards instead of reusing the liquids.
@@JFomo Hahaha! Why do I get the feeling you leave assumptive comments like this all over TH-cam.
