This isn’t fair, you don’t limit how a footballer kicks the ball incase it hits someone on the head so why do it with cheer. So long as people are careful things will be fine and anything that happens is by accident. Anyone who does Cheer knows this.

I was a varsity male cheerleader for Florida State University. I was one of the seven guys and seven girls that made-up the varsity squad . It was extremely difficult to make the team with practices and schooling and worried about having enough money to afford to stay in school for it was expensive. Problems were always around . But when I made the team it was truly one of the best exciting moments of my whole entire life. The requirements in becoming a cheerleader in today's world have become so advanced that I still would of be able to make the squad. I loved the tumbling , flips trampoline all that stuff. Still do, but I'm old now and the body didn't do like it used to. The girls part have gone over the top with all the new stunts and their part I don't at all envy. It's extremely dangerous the acrobatics that they do in today's cheering world. It's really outragious the flips , leg extensions and heights that they do all their stuff. For the guys have an enormous responsibility in spotting and catching these girls and it's actually a very nerve racking job. To be at the right place at exactly the right time takes tons of practice let alone to be constantly in sync with the everyone else in timing is almost death defying. My partner was a trip delta bitch. A rich girl who was no fun. Absorbed in only herself and she had a tendency to kick and slap me when she wasn't satisfied. I remember a few instances where it became prevelent To me , I hated working with her. She was a prudent bitch. Always always complaining and the other girls got so fed up with her bullshit over the course of the season. Anyhow, we were performing a new stunt. She was flying high as I lifted her into the air sideways. Well, she went that way and I went the other way , out of confusion as she was supposed to land stretched out in my arms flexed out. Well I remember she went pretty high and I held out my arms to catch her and she sent the wrong way and came slamming down on her side and face into the hard ground. To me and everybody else, it was funny. It shut her bitchy mouth for a while. I couldn't wait for the season to be over with because she made everything and everybody so miserable.
U 6 yr old granddaughter is a competitive cheerleader and loves it she looks forward to her practices she has twice a week she wouldn't want to do anything else
Okay let me just say something. In football you are supposed to tackle each other to get the ball, boxing and wrestling you are supposed to hurt each other, but cheerleading can’t be the way it is? The bases and backspots do everything they need to do to catch their flyers. When I based before, my flyer started falling and I didn’t let her fall and I got a bloody nose, I sprained my ankle, I injured my knee, fell on my back, but the more we get hurt, the more we want to cheer so we can fix the problems. I just don’t understand why the sports you are purposely hurting each other is okay but cheerleading isn’t. Any cheerleaders here that agree?
It’s an unregulated sport, even the tumbling isn’t taught properly. When a gymnast joins a cheerleading team 9/10 they blow the whole team away because their training is MUCH better than what you get from cheer. Looking back I wish I did gymnastics and dance
"4x more then 30 years ago" u literally showed what cheerleaders from 30 years ago did, so I wonder why literally flying thru the air lands more ER visits then standing in a long skirt and clapping sometimes back in the 80s?
this is so bias they have literally no clue what they're talking about. as a level 4 competitive cheerleader i know for a fact that we don't "chuck people in the air" we also have amazing coachs, and one last thing we have so many rules.
OMG Ihate that people are always like "cheerleading isn't a sport"and"oh its too dangerous"like boii YOU COULD GET HURT IN EVERY SINGLE SPORT PLUS if they cut practice time that would increase the chances of nore ingeries and if you practice more that would decrease the chances of ingeries like boii!
I’ve noticed a difference in the making of cheerleaders and gym leaders. The accidents have sky rocketed when they come out with performance only squads and a lot of them don’t even cheer for a school but some girls do.
Ok I'm sorry but.... When you sign up to be a cheer-leader your signing up for the pain and injury's.if you can't handle it then don't join. Cheer is a great sport,it's addicting and builds team work. People are just week. So don't take the fun out of it for the ones who know what they're signing up for. Pain and injury's are part of the sport.that is my opinion. Thank you.
this is so stupid. it is safe and people don't just get chucked up in the air. the start of small and the n over time do the more dangerous stunts. if they want to make cheer safer than they are going to have to do the same with gynastics because they do tumbling as well also that use trampolines.
One cheerleading is a sport and if you join cheer you know you me gonna get hurt so don't join if you can take it and yes I am a cheerleader and yes I tore my acl and I hurts but I would never stop cheering
Millions and Millions of girls and guys cheer every week of the year without injury. A relatively small percentage get injuries. Things happen in life, sports, and yes,.. Cheer. But do we just stop living life,.. do we we cower and live in a bubble. Do we regulate everything and anything that has risk? My Daughter is a Flyer and she just got dropped at practice today. Being a Flyer or base take strength, discipline, physical and mental toughness, and teamwork. These are great traits to learn through cheer. I worry as a parent, but am proud that my daughter is a flyer. I raced motocross when I was young and broke several bones, and had a major concussion which I woke up in the hospital 2 days after the accident,.. but I would race all over again.
They say that football is more dangerous, yet they don’t do anything about it, do they? Crazy how they limit practice time, too, because that’ll make everything worse.
ikr.. these people who have falls and injuries don't have the coaches that my team does. We practice in an old parking garage that has mats for floors and trophies for walls. Our biggest injury of the year was a broken nose and the only ones we look forward to are black eyes and bruises. Last year on the middle school team we had a girl sitting out in a wheelchair for state. Everyone felt sorry for her and thought that since she was a flyer it was cheer related. She had actually got her leg tang
I have been cheering for 12 year's competitive flyer and never once got hurt other than a few bruises here and there our bases work hard and we do pushups if a stunt falls ir the flyer gets hurt
ok buddy, your telling me someone running full speed at you while your in the air catching a football and his mindset is to end yo life isnt as dangerous as 3-5 people throwing you in the air and catching you?
this is why all comps should have spots no matter what also they make cheer sound so awful and dangerous but really everyone is concerned for your well being and health no matter what so this just makes me mad seeing how they are describing this AMAZING sport
Sammi Irwin 卌 true, if they put cheer they should put dance in because its as much of as sport as “cheer”. I hate it when cheerleaders think catching a ball isn’t hard or running a 1600 in track isn’t “hard” cause you aren’t throwing anyone in the air.
jessica NO. That is not the point at all that cheerleaders are trying to make. They are saying that throwing a person is just as hard as running and throwing a ball. All sports take time, practice, and dedication but also strength(in any form). Cheerleaders spend just as much time practicing as all the other sports and they would like the same recognition as all the other sports. I am a cheerleader and I know that cheer requires both mental and physical strength, and it is definitely qualified to be a sport
Horse back riding, boxing, football, baseball, gymnastics, and etc are dangerous sports. But only cheerleading gets this treatment. This is unfair..Yes, I know that cheerleading is dangerous, everyone knows that. But the other sports are okay?! "Limit practice time" are you trying to get people killed? That is even worse! Football can kill people too. But no i guess that is "normal." 😒😒 Let along gymnastics is kinda (but not really) the same as cheerleading. Besides cheerleading isn't just flipping people around or breaking body parts, it teaches US cheerleaders to be physically and mentally strong. Also to be kind, have good sportsmanship, and work as a team ( even if you hate your teammates ) I just don't like how cheerleading gets treated. It either boys saying "Its not a sport" or other people saying "its dangerous. Someone can be killed!!" Like, that is what practice is for. Its so annoying and not needed.
Awkward-Chan _ I completely agree with what you’re saying except the gymnastics being similar to cheer. Literally the only thing that is the same in cheer and gymnastics is tumbling, and even that has exceptions. But I agree with everything else :)
I did cheerleading and I still do cheerleading and we don’t limit the amount of practices we just do it three times a week and we make sure if we can’t do a stunt we don’t do that stunt I’ve been dropped multiple times out of labs arabesques pyramids even during competition and I’m still doing it it’s gonna be harder to make cheerleading safe because you have to trust the people that you are cheering with at a competitive level and in school cheerleading as well the coaches do the best that they can and they work with what they have
I'm a cheerleader and i'm a flyer we have many new girls in our team and today i stunted with them and we tried a twist and it went very well but one girl who is new didn't catch me and i fell on the back it hurts very bad now and i am going to the hospital tomorrow. Cheerleading is dangerous very dangerous , i don't want to say that she is a bad sidebase but she has to catch me even if my twist isn't that wonderful she has to catch me. I wanted to cry but didn't want to because i thought that this is gonna be embarrassing if i start to cry but i tried to hold it back and it worked. Sry for my bad english i'm from austria
Okay for 1/2 of those stunts, the bases caught them. I am a flyer and I would be HAPPY to have bases that actually caught me. This video is insane. At least show stunts that the bases didn't catch the flyer, and maybe your point would be a little more convincing. :l
“ The one thing everyone agrees on is it’s time to make cheer safer” They really know nothing about cheer. They don’t know how much joy it brings us to be doing what we do, now they’re trying to take it away and they’re saying everyone agrees on it. They only agree on it because they don’t know how great it makes us feel. If you’re agreeing with this you’re definitely not a cheerleader and you have no perspective on what it’s like to be one.
but the question is do you want to catch your flyer cause i was back spot for two years and i was the only one that good wolde catch my flyer cause all the other girls and boys said and i quote i got scared or i panic ,same thing when i was base and main but i mean i wolde panic or get scared but at least i caught her
Limited practice times? Are you serious! I’m a cheerleader and sure there is a chance of you getting hurt but come on you can get hurt in literally any sport. In football they literally tackle people to the ground. You might fall in cheerleading or get injured but we push through the pain and get the task down.
exactly. Our coaches are the best. We do good and are confident because sharon and bill are like family. I could have the longest texting conversation with her that I could ever possibly have with a 40+ year old woman about girl stuff. Bill knows his stuff too. He used to be an EMT and is now our tumbling coach. We don't have injuries, nor do we barely have 2nd place trophies. We aren't very well funded but we do things right
My coach forced me to do a back tuck at comp when I wasn’t ready Bc I had just learned it the day before and I shattered my whole knee and the team was mad at me Bc they didn’t win then I got kicked off
people who disliked still dont care.. one of my cheermates was dropped in our hardest stunt so far and broke her arm.. almost her leg to. i almost died twice
Ive been cheering since I was 3.....the worst injury ive ever gotten in my life is a rolled ankle....i was racing my friend...its not the coaches fault its the cheerleaders fault for not listening when the coach told them what to do...
Well this happens. I just broke my ankle and popped my knee from cheer. It’s still fun. And excuse me we have the best frickin coaches ever. How do you think we win FIRST PLACE dummy’s.
I do cheer and yes you can get hurt but it’s up to you and my bases and backs love me so much I know that they won’t let me fall. It’s not as dangerous as you think it looks dangerous if you don’t do you job right
thats so weird. They used a clip from UIC cheerleaders starting at 1:26. I cheered there recently and know like one person in the video who was a student there a longgggggg time ago. I wonder how they got the clip cause I never saw it before
First of all I agree with Guidelines of safety for these kids , UCA has very Strict Rules for safety in practice and on the Matt’s in Competition, Never have I seen High School or youth Practice without them in a gym and on the sidelines they keep it clean while girls are cheering for football , because there are No Matt’s as far as learning to tumble Matt’s are always in place and many of the Stunts in High School have been looked at and Modified and rules are changed , All Coaches go to Camp with girls in Summer , learning proper technique and safety, there are few other Organisations , like All Star Cheer , rules are different but they are also Rigorous in insuring these girls and boys are safe and taught well , attend some of these practices for youth High School and College and also , All Star ⭐️ you will see how hard these kids work to keep each other safe , injuries do happen but hopefully not as often as one might think ..

I remember a few instances where it became prevelent
To me , I hated working with her.
Maybe if people would take the sport more seriously, safety would be more ensured.
:daredevil stunts
Me: sis they fine. They breathin
(My coach always says if you’re breathing your ok)
As an cheerleader I think some stunts we do our unsafe but the floors have tons of padding and if you're thought well u should be able to do it
"4x more then 30 years ago" u literally showed what cheerleaders from 30 years ago did, so I wonder why literally flying thru the air lands more ER visits then standing in a long skirt and clapping sometimes back in the 80s?
this is so bias they have literally no clue what they're talking about. as a level 4 competitive cheerleader i know for a fact that we don't "chuck people in the air" we also have amazing coachs, and one last thing we have so many rules.
Thank you.
I play football, I don't know anything about cheer, but at my school, we don't have any injured cheerleaders its very rare at my school.
this is so stupid. it is safe and people don't just get chucked up in the air. the start of small and the n over time do the more dangerous stunts. if they want to make cheer safer than they are going to have to do the same with gynastics because they do tumbling as well also that use trampolines.
And gymnast tumble and do some pretty hard turns on a 4 inch beam
go do my part in my routine & get back to me. then you can say if it's a sport or not.
One cheerleading is a sport and if you join cheer you know you me gonna get hurt so don't join if you can take it and yes I am a cheerleader and yes I tore my acl and I hurts but I would never stop cheering
also boxing and wrestling your goal is to hurt someone while cheer is about trying to not get hurt
My teacher used to be a cheerleader we natinol champions 2 times in a row and has been teaching cheer for a long time
Millions and Millions of girls and guys cheer every week of the year without injury. I raced motocross when I was young and broke several bones, and had a major concussion which I woke up in the hospital 2 days after the accident,.. but I would race all over again.
um to me this is like saying a barrel racer needs to go at a certain speed bc it’s “dangerous.”
Cheer is an official sport?
ABC News i luv cheerleading stop making it look bad got something to say i mean ITS A SPORT SO WHY HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IT
If a cheerleader falls on her head, how can they tell if she has brain damage?
If you have a bad coach and if you aren’t trained good you and especially limiting practice time will definitely increase chances of injury
We do do it on a trampoline and plus it’s the flyers fault or the stunt that they fall for losing grip or wiggling
WTF I DO CHEERLEADING AND THATS THE BEST SPORT I DO
They say that football is more dangerous, yet they don’t do anything about it, do they? Crazy how they limit practice time, too, because that’ll make everything worse.
ikr.. these people who have falls and injuries don't have the coaches that my team does. We practice in an old parking garage that has mats for floors and trophies for walls. Our biggest injury of the year was a broken nose and the only ones we look forward to are black eyes and bruises. Last year on the middle school team we had a girl sitting out in a wheelchair for state. Everyone felt sorry for her and thought that since she was a flyer it was cheer related. She had actually got her leg tang
maybe no trampoline trampolines, but tumbl-traks are less springy and makes life simple lol
Ok but there is rules though? Some stunts are illegal for the less trained levels
I have been cheering for 12 year's competitive flyer and never once got hurt other than a few bruises here and there our bases work hard and we do pushups if a stunt falls ir the flyer gets hurt
They r honestly using like no correct terminology like ✋ bruh
ok buddy, your telling me someone running full speed at you while your in the air catching a football and his mindset is to end yo life isnt as dangerous as 3-5 people throwing you in the air and catching you?
this is why all comps should have spots no matter what also they make cheer sound so awful and dangerous but really everyone is concerned for your well being and health no matter what so this just makes me mad seeing how they are describing this AMAZING sport
Cheerleading isn't a sport they said.. You would be fine they said
(Edit: Tbh i find catching a ball hard too)
K
Jennifer Sophia Yeah, I didn't believe that gymnastics was similar to cheer either. I just didn't want to trigger anyone that also did gymnastics.
Awkward-Chan _ Ok :)
Stop dissing my sports!!!
We do have physical exams and limits of practice time
I did cheerleading and I still do cheerleading and we don’t limit the amount of practices we just do it three times a week and we make sure if we can’t do a stunt we don’t do that stunt I’ve been dropped multiple times out of labs arabesques pyramids even during competition and I’m still doing it it’s gonna be harder to make cheerleading safe because you have to trust the people that you are cheering with at a competitive level and in school cheerleading as well the coaches do the best that they can and they work with what they have
us cheerleaders don’t care about the injuries that may happen ,, we love the sport and it’s our life we couldn’t live without it
I'm a cheerleader and i'm a flyer we have many new girls in our team and today i stunted with them and we tried a twist and it went very well but one girl who is new didn't catch me and i fell on the back it hurts very bad now and i am going to the hospital tomorrow.
Cheerleading especially competitive cheerleading is a really grueling sport and getting injured is part of it
Yess I agree! I just dislocated and broke my elbow doing cheer. Not a safe sport🙄
That’s not the sports fault tho
Nope. Not making it easy lol. Level 6 is the toughest and many more than 2 levels lol
They say it’s dangerous but they say it isn’t a sport !! That makes no sense
but the question is do you want to catch your flyer cause i was back spot for two years and i was the only one that good wolde catch my flyer cause all the other girls and boys said and i quote i got scared or i panic ,same thing when i was base and main but i mean i wolde panic or get scared but at least i caught her
What is wrong with these people I have never been hurt and I’m a base and I’ve been cheering for 4 years like what the heck
We aren't very well funded but we do things right
I'm just sitting here trying to figure out how this is worse than football or hockey.
"Looks like no prom for you this year, Debbie..." (iCarly, Nickelodeon)
Have they seen football. These people need to just stop
My coach forced me to do a back tuck at comp when I wasn’t ready Bc I had just learned it the day before and I shattered my whole knee and the team was mad at me Bc they didn’t win then I got kicked off
And people still think cheer isn’t a sport
I hope this is just a recommendation
people who disliked still dont care.. one of my cheermates was dropped in our hardest stunt so far and broke her arm.. almost her leg to. i almost died twice
I wonder how they got the clip cause I never saw it before
Another thing to think about is how when you are competing there is litterley TRAINED coaches watching over you
Nobody ever comments about the Add before the video
sit home and watch the news all day and you wont get injured
Hey imma cheerleader who tore my patella tendon! What a coincidence😂
I hate people who think they know what they're doing, don't limit routines
The quality and safety of cheer isn't going to be improved until people actually accept this IS a SPORT!
Idk how I got here, but IMO people know the risks and have every right to assume the risks for themselves.
