The scouting was everything. Maru's scouting was shit. He let lings just walk into his base and kill everything cuz he didn't have a single marine patrolling the attack paths to see them coming. The entire game would've gone different if Maru could scout worth a damn.
Roughly one year ago, when Serral dismantled Maru, somebody said: "Serral makes Maru look like somebody I could beat." Well, the same was true on Sunday. @@malaysianman5941The problem is Rogue also never beat Serral on lan. And all the BS about GSL being better because it allows more time for preparation is dumb, because Serral has shown again and again that he is also the best at that, no one can be better than him with preparation, and he always crushes it with the mind games.
Serral just did what he always does: slowly suffocating his enemies, let them breath a bit then choke their neck again then repeat, let them have hope and the will to survive, only to crush it. Until they are completely broken. You can see her0 basically threw games in the last games against serral, even when he got one game in his hand, telling you how much serral crushes his enemies' will before devouring them. If you only count Lan wins Maru's last win vs Serral was WESG 2017 Maru hasn't beaten Serral on lan even once since then its kinda crazy that its been 7 years.
It's worth mentioning (in case you don't know) that Maru is an absolutely amazing player, who would be probably called the GOAT in some alternate, "Serral-free" universe.
Reynor and Rogue didn't even make it to the semis. Maru won 3-1 over Dark in the semis. Oliveira wiped the floor with Reynor in this tournament. The balance is fine, it's Serral that is OP
damn, how Serral gonna 4-0 Maru twice sheeeeshh, that's hardcore. SC2 is unforgiving, being on Marus level and getting 4-0 for ffs at least Maru has a bunch of 1st place wins/champs
I think Maru is particularly weak to Serral. Oliveira did much better vs Serral, despite having way lower stats overall. I still don't feel bad for the 8 time GSL winner; he got 2nd place here (again) and has a huge list of trophies and achievements.
Still zero world championships. Maybe he should stop farming low level Korean tournaments and come play against the best in Europe ;) Jk, Jk, it's just funny how the tables are turning.
@manumainio3451 Well, Reynor already went to Korea and got his ass handed to him at the last GSL - and he is not the only one who looks suddenly a lot less amazing while in Korea. And Maru doesn't do badly outside of Korea. It's just that Serral is in a class of his own. Europe has some other strong players, but they are not particularly amazing without Serral. When he retires, Korea will be right back on top.
Serral is closer to perfection in playing SC2 as anyone else before. about 6 years ago when he hasn't won a single tourney yet, I predicted that he is going to be the best non korean ever, but he has become the GOAT. unbelievable.
I'm sorry, I just HAVE to add this: This is Serral WHILE IN MILITARY SERVICE! He spends most of his days learning how to fight in a real war, not playing SC2. Sure, he probably has access to a computer to keep his skill on point, but believe me - you don't have the energy to do it while in military service. And he's finnish, they have a record of having some of the hardest military service out there. People who watch this and whine about balance just remember - The PLAYERS themselves don't. Maru doesn't think Zerg is OP. He's just frustrated when he faces Serral because he's just THAT good.
Serral joined in s special military troop that is specialized for athlet. That's why he has a lots of time to practice sc2. but that is still unreal for him to maintain his God mode in military service.
We've got a special unit for people who need to train their sport while serving. Still, army is his full time dayjob for now, even if there is support for his SC2 career.
Dammm. To think only Oliveira was the only player to have a fighting chance against Serral. I have not seen Maru get dominated so badly in a long long time.
Maru was destroyed again in the same manner a few months ago in IEM Katowice. Another easy 4-0 by Serral. It's not even a surprise anymore, Serral vs Maru is the most obvious result in the game's entire history.
Oliveira is on the same team as Serral and they practice a LOT together. When they started out Oliveira said he lost 20 in a row, had an overall record of 10-227 or something like that. But they played more and more and trained with each other and grinded it out and he identified this one small timing window of slight vulnerability in serral's game, and that's why he goes for this octorax/8rax timing push to the 3rd, cutting workers and doing a massive tank/marine push at like 8:30 - and this is what won him two maps. On Alcyone, when Serral committed to the breakout attack, he actually had enough to beat the army he saw - the problem is Oliveira had another 20-30 supply right behind serral's vision / scouting range, so Serral got tricked once.
I mean, if he's playing BW at the moment, it's safe to assume he's fuming with rage. poor guy, I still can't understand how someone can be suh a chill, nice person while casting and such an unrelenting screeching douchebag while playing.
If these are the GOATS (and they are), then it's pretty fucked up for a GOAT to know he is basically nothing compared to the other GOAT. Second final in a year's time where he does not get 1 map win in. I think Maru should be happy Serral never joines GSL properly, or those 8 GSL wins, and maybe even more, would be somewhere else....
**SPOILER ALERT** Serral made beating Maru look so remarkably simple, it almost made me think I could do it too. I know I can't even come close to it but, the clinic Serral just put on made it look so easy.
@@miniwaern What are you even talking about? I put a spoiler alert in all caps and bold. Sharing a similar thought as other people isn't copying either. You're weird dude.
I seriously spent like 10 minutes trying to figure out where the rest of the BO7 was. Like was this the first game? Is there a second part? Gave up and watched Serral snap Maru like a fucking twig in an amount of time I didn't think was possible. Serral is the GOAT. There is no doubt.
You can compare the match between Oliveira and Serral. At the 8:30 mark, Oli's 160 supply "full-force punch" (with at least 3 tanks and infantry units) is already halfway across the map and on the way to the Zerg's base. However, Maru often only has around 130 supply at the 8:30 mark, applying much less pressure on Serral in the early game. Perhaps his shoulder injury prevents him from executing high-intensity pressure on the Zerg in the early stages.
Man, as a Maru BIG fan it hurts so hard to see my favourite player being absolutely destroyed again in finals again. And right now it's not about the Serral (i don't like him but gotta admit he is the best), it's about Maru choking so hard. Remember watching him like 5-6 years ago 😢
Yeah. I'm a Serral fan and I don't generally like Maru, but I felt real empathy for him during Katowice and today. If anything, these 2 finals reminded me that Maru is mortal, like the rest of us, and that he's worked hella hard since a young age to be where he is. So at least it gave some of us a new perspective on him, and more appreciation for his achievements.

Look up Hakuho in regards to Sumo. Respect to Serral but his win streaks and tournament wins are like an ant in comparison. Undeniable greatness in the esports realm though.
I don't think is fair or even necessary to compare players of different sports. Serral is great and undeniably the goat of SC2, but many sports have had very dominating figures. E.g., Alexander Karelin in wrestling. Happy has dominated WC3 for the last few years. Rapha is probably the god of Quake - he has won 16 major tournaments and countless others ever since 2008. His one-sided dominance might be one of the reasons arena shooters aren't as popular in esports as other shooters - he just makes it too one-sided, lol.
@@KoozjeTo elaborate, Serral was put into a special program specifically for international sports competitors within Finland allowing them to still compete in international events. And Serral is the first esports player in Finland to be accepted into this program.
Maru is such a great player that has no answer to Serral and arrives already defeated. He'll need to do what Serral did when Reynor started beating him, to change his playstyle, his basis changed, which is a very zerg thing to do if you think about it. It was bad at first, then it was good, really good.
He gets weirdly nervous when he plays Serral, like he knows the ass-beating that is coming his way. You don't see him making these mistakes vs Dark or Shin.

zerglings are cheap early unit. But it was fast and powerful enough even in early game terran has to play "the floor is lava". do you have any idea how many matches I saw if terran send their units out in early game without medivac, artosis would cast "those units are so dead" and he usually right. zergling speed and damages and also baneling ( so intsead of just one bane, player need to use two do destroy svc now?) not to mention health left make the easy picking for zerglings. let me give another example: if terran disable colossus, in order to destroy it terran unit have to go in and fight other units stand shoulder to shoulder with to colossus. abducts on the other hands takes a unit and throw them to your army group. Anyway I'm going to say this (and this isn't even my word - but from someone who is knowledgeable in the game): SC1 - as imbalance as it might be - the controls limit it. SC2, now the imbalances (not only in stat, but by design) multiplies. Artosis own word in one of his videos are ( taking about bane patch) zerg is a race that attack moves and win. Now it still attack move and win, just with baneling has less hp.
Even a direct nerf to serral like military service doesn't do shit. He's still the GOAT. Maru is doodoo. GSL players should know by now that they have to prepare for Serral by default because they will eventually face him.
A strat executed by a pro hits way faster and harder than a plat player doing a similar build. And no, roach timings work at high level, especially roach/ravager. A 1/1 roach trades well against similar level marines and the ravagers can snipe tanks.
@@hunteriv4869 it really doesn't matter what the play is as long as it's effective for the current situation. Serral scouting is top stuff. I can't count how many times Clem has dismantled zerg players with a hand full of marines that were in the right place at the right time with the zerg players being clueless. Serral is just on another level on all fundamentals of the game: scouting, defense, attacking, economy, micro, macro. You're not going to get lucky often, you won't surprise him and you can't turtle against him. I'm so glad we have him because the alternative is a player like Maru can just turtle and win grand finals which is extremely frustrating to watch.
Well, Maru can be considered a Diamond player when he is against the GOAT. The difference is skill is just that vast as shown once again in a major grand final.
Whoa what did I just watch?! Maru got swept away so hard man. I know Serral is one of the top players, but I don't think I've seen him play this well before.
He is, he just took some time off to play in this (you are allowed time off in every country with mandatory service after the first few weeks of basic training).

When you have a week or more to prepare for a specific opponent and their specific style, strengths/weaknesses that absolutely makes the tournament a different type of tournament. If you don’t get that it’s fine, you don’t have to get it. But not playing in GSL certainly doesn’t take away from the fact that Serral is the best in the world and has been for a while.
@Bananaman-jm4xl dude, it's fair and square. It's not like Serral had the time to study maru either and same can be said for maru. If I get into a street scrap with you more than once without knowing you at all but I win them all then that would make me a better fighter. Format being different is excuses excuses and some more excuses. If Maru is the better player, he would have won wether its ESL, IEM or GSL format.
Your boy serral won and you're still yapping? Congrats to serral. He's obviously better. Too bad his fan still feels the need to defend him. Yap yap yap yap yap.
People in the comments thinking Serral would dominate in GSL. GSL is completely different. Serral knows he can't afford to play all those online tournaments and he never plays them. The reason he dominates is because he plays zerg (the race that can afford to play the same mapped out game 1000 times in a row and win), and because he only gets to play people like Maru twice a year. Oliveira is on the same team as Serral, so he gets to play him more, and we saw their series was equal. No, Serral can't dominate in GSL the same way he dominates these one-offs. Maru can. That's a completely different level of achievement.
You Terran mains always cry and cope in the comments. Serral's 75% win rate against Maru is no coincidence neither are his accomplishments vs any player. He is literally the best statistical player of all time and it is not even close. Reason why he doesn't join GSL is because he has to spend a lot of time in Korea and it doesn't fit his lifestyle since he likes talking walks and playing golf and whatever farm boys do in their free time. Every single Korean he has faced has always had the time to prepare against Serral yet they always have a losing win rate against him. There is no excuse I do not care. Sure GSL is different but I have yet to see a single Koreans dominate the game like Serral has for 6 years now. He wins almost everything he participates in and is always the favorite to win by a wide margin. Look at his rating and he is literally leagues above any Zerg. He has 3999 against Protoss, 4000+ against Terran and 3600 against Zerg. The people below him statistically are Maru, Maxpax, Clem and Dark in that order, yet they are still far below Serral. Serral is a league of its own. No Zerg is as good as him. Dark is 5th right now and is also way below Maru and Clem who are both Terrans. Terrans always cry they have been doing so since the beginning of the game.
@@2nerC9 that's because you don't understand how terrans and zergs came to be. No doubt Serral is the best zerg player, but you can't compare what he has to do to win with what terrans need to do to win. Terran was designed in the same fashion any RTS games of the time were designed; you have a natural production cycle roughly reflecting how human production works in real life. Then the designers sat down and started inventing insane spells and mechanics for the other two races. That's why basic rules of RTS don't always apply to zerg or protoss, with zerg being able to go to 80 drones in 3 minutes, etc. Terran is predictable, with slow linear ramp-up of production and economy and limited opportunities for suprise. Zerg can throw down a fake third and go build 100 roaches that you can't do anything against unless you scout it immediately and do the exact right thing. All Serral has to do is play the same game he practiced 10000 times perfectly, and he wins. No terran can ever just play standard, they need to come up with new inventive and unique builds every tournament, and not show them until the finals. It is not a level playing field in the slightest, and you can't compare Serral's domination with any terran simply because domination like that is not possible with terran no matter how much better you are than everyone else.
@@alk672so much copium 😂 if T is "harder" to play, why don't T players switch to a different race and earn the easy money? moreover, why was the last world championship finals a TvT (Oliveira vs Maru)? why does this year's world championship (EWC) have 9 Terrans, 5 Zergs and 4 Protoss? repeat: there are as many Terrans qualified in the tournamemt as Z and P _combined_. can you explain that?
I think its more likely that he's choking, now I don't think he should win if he was in peak form but he has a surprisingly long record of losing finals even in Gsl it took him quite a few tries to get his G5L and even his pretty one sided loss to Olivera in the prior Katowice, it just seems like he just flops in finals.
@@Mglunafh Maru was pretty dead after the mid-game Raven/Roach pushes; anything after that is just a nail in the coffin. I was surprised to see Maru this less active. Serral is incredible good, but Maru wasn't playing as he was some years ago. He in fact tried to win with the same strategy 4 times in row with just small to no changes. So there was no need for serral to change something either. Olivera was by far more creative and way less predictable.
It's funny to think that to finish the debate once and for all about who is the GOAT of Starcraft2, Serral would have to go to korean territory and win the GSL... That would be the greatest achievments in gaming history: Beating the first nation who made gaming a possible substainable job, on the game that made it all possible. Just imagine...
Serral already won gsl twice against the world, it is not the same but he beat all the Koreans in an epic final with stats and in that same year he won blizcon again against stats
He doesn't need to win GSL to be the goat. It's a silly idea, tbh. The debate is over. Serral has a winning score against every player in the GSL. All the players from the GSL come to international tournaments and lose to Serral. Maru, the best GSL has to offer, has been 4-0'd again and again by Serral. Saying GSL has any significance for the GOAT debate when the GOAT has been consistently beating GSL players for 8 years now is comical and absurd. It's the skill, the players and the matches between them that count in SC2, not the organizing company, the country, or the name of the tournament.
well depends. I think its the fact that Zerg in Korea play very different than Serral and Maru doesn't seem prepared whenever he faces him but then Terrans are dominating GSL. Serral is an animal.
Even though Maru has the most GSL championships by far, I feel that his achievement has an asterisk because all his GSLs came after Korean pro teams were dismantled and some top Koreans retire/went to military and in general Koreans are no longer dominating the world - in fact, Serral and Reynor were already dominating the international premier events then. Winning the Korean's premier event as such certainly lost some luster. Maru's horrible tournament records against Serral is certainly not helping his case as the greatest T of all time.

Great game, great season, congrats Serral, bravo Starcraft! ❤❤❤
Maru is just another Serral's food. And maru's fans are crying so much seeing their idols being eating alive in a desperate manner
Maru's style is Serral's perfect bread and butter answer. I have yet to see Maru beat Serral to be honest.

This is Serral WHILE IN MILITARY SERVICE!

This is why Serral doesn't need to play in GSL. And all these Maru fan boys come at me and say ohhhh it's different blah blah. 😅
The formats are different. It really depends what you prefer, GSL allows more prep imo. It’s like comparing speed chess to 10 minute games.
Love seeing serral dominate the worlds best terran with my opening over 3 games and every time he plays it.

Best of 7 and it is only 44 minutes.. and maru lost firet game.... the future is bleak😂
23:18 maru's wtf smile.
Well Serral seems to life in Marus head, rentfree ^^
He does this to Maru just as Maru does this to Shin 😂
Soo Zerg isnt ahead by default and it really is just Serral? Sorry been away for some time
well depends. I think its the fact that Zerg in Korea play very different than Serral and Maru doesn't seem prepared whenever he faces him but then Terrans are dominating GSL. Serral is an animal.
Apparently rape is not illegal in Starcraft2, that was brutal
Even though Maru has the most GSL championships by far, I feel that his achievement has an asterisk because all his GSLs came after Korean pro teams were dismantled and some top Koreans retire/went to military and in general Koreans are no longer dominating the world - in fact, Serral and Reynor were already dominating the international premier events then. Winning the Korean's premier event as such certainly lost some luster. Maru's horrible tournament records against Serral is certainly not helping his case as the greatest T of all time.
Well there are like two players outside of Korea who consistently play at the top level. In fact, since sc1 times most professional players in the world are Korean and that remains true to this day.
@@IR-xy3ij Not true. Back in SC1 times, there were no foreigner that played consistently at the top level. SC2 for the first few years that didn't happen either (Naniwa wasn't very consistent at the top level). It was really around the time that Blizzard was pushing hard to promote SC2 outside Korea + the decline of interest over SC2 inside Korea, that the foreigners really broke out (and Korean pro level dropped). Serral, Reynor, Clem, MaxPax are all top level and frankly only Maru, herO, Dark could be said at their level now.
Serral dominating already but Reynor was not, Reynor's playstyle was ineffective sometime
@@businesscat9938Yeah, honestly these days I look and Reynor and think its basically a coin flip between him being around top 16 level or being around top 4 level he's probably the least consistent top player right now...
@COSMOSSC2, "BARALHO" COMO VC NÃO POSTA ISSO, POXA??????
Just waiting till everyone cries to nerf Zerg in 3...2....1....
