    As a female mountain biker in my 60's also living on the west coast, Betty is a huge inspiration! Thank you Remy and Betty, for this video. So many of the comments and insights rang true about technique, as well as mindset as we age. The nice thing about being an older rider, is that I don't feel a need to impress anyone anymore, and am confident enough to say "no" when I need to, so that I can enjoy the ride based on how I feel that day, work to continually improve, and feel a sense of accomplishment for the small wins. I'd love to ride with Betty but I don't know if I could keep up! :D

    • @robertgeorge2833
      @robertgeorge2833 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes, agreed whole heartedly about no need to impress anyone, nor bow to the pressure of doing stuff that is sketch. Although there's a fine line between honing one's skills and doing stuff beyond one's skills. Only one to impress is yourself, so keep that in mind when checking out that 5 foot drop.

      It’s not about “keeping up”, it’s about “being with” and sharing the moment. I’m 57 and there is no way in hell, I’d be able to keep up with Betty but I’d welcome the opportunity to go riding with her and more importantly learning from her. The woman has got skills and just like “Dirty Harry” she knows her limitations. There are many younger riders who would do well learning from her example.

      I am a 47 year old mountain biker/downhill and 73 and still riding inspires me. Age is nothing but a number but I agree that the older we get...the less we have to prove. When I ride alone, I take less risks and the time I go is so early in the morning that no one is around in case I get injured. I used to think I needed to do the 6 foot gaps or jumps but not anymore. I don't mind just doing 2 foot kickers or drops...I still have fun without having something to prove to go bigger. I just want to have fun and it's just not as important as it used to be to go too extreme.

      I'm 73 too & I ride MBs, but I don't want to be inspired right into a wheel chair.
      I'll pass on black diamond trails. I've had plenty of broken bones already.

      Obviously, it is a matter of what you like to do in life. At 71, my goal is just being comfortable in and enjoy what I do. This is something wonderful you do alone at any age; the more experienced you are the less the need to impress others. People say bicycling is good for us! I love the fresh air and I like the ability of maneuvering the bike.
      Betty does not need to impress; but she is so awesome!

    Wow. I’m 51, and took up mountain biking for my 50th birthday. When I started, I admit fearing that I’d be too old to really enjoy or commit to the sport. I was happy to learn that I - WAS - WRONG!!! Even better, inspirations like Betty show me what still lies ahead. Thank you Betty! Thank you Remy! Great video!

      Yep me to.
      I took it up at age 49 last June, watched s few you tube videos. Practiced for six hours s day, six day's a week.
      After three weeks of hardcore practice and many injuries coming off, I was sending safely over 15 foot gap jumps.
      Then again have adhd so I have much lower fear levels to dangerous things in life, I get a bit of nervous energy but that's it. I don't get afraid of danger.
      Well done.

      Yeah at the beginning I was like Remy, wow sh'es really good, taking all those little drops, roots and everything....but then at like the middle of the video, wtf all those steeps she was riding!!!! Those looked really steep on gopro so for real, I'm not even sure I would ride everything that she did!! :O I can't imagine riding trails like this with my mom, that would be so cool!!! But I would be wayyyy to nervous for her! haha

    48 year old female and purchased my first mtn bike and riding trails. I’m having fun while crashing, bruising, laughing at myself while learning to maneuver on these awesome trails. My friends are patient with this older gal as I learn techniques and improve. It’s a lot of fun and I am hooked! Love this video. Thank you. What an inspiration for me. 🙏🥰

    My husband and I started riding 5 years ago (at ages 67 and 65, respectively). Betty's comments about working on skills and improving technique definitely resonate. We are setting PRs on Strava and "competing" in the 70-74 age group. Betty is proof that we are not crazy for mountain biking "at our age." Thank you and Betty for the awesome video!

      Old guy biker here (66). Really wonderful the way you helped give her the confidence to take on that gap. I have no doubt that it was really appreciated and made her day. As we get older, and our physical powers diminish, it gets harder and harder to maintain our confidence. Good for you to do that.

      @Dev Guy to each their own probably. One decides to live life with a little more risk, others go different. It is also what Rémy said; naturally when aging the level of fear increases. You should do you, all is good.

    Betty is an inspiration for older men and women alike, as an over 50 mountain biker from the UK and suffer with a number of illnesses Inc lower back spondylosis and c.o.p.d, biking keeps me going and helps with the depression I get from the pain I can be in on a daily basis, granted some days I'm physically unable to ride but the days I can I take full advantage of every minute im out, even in the rain.

    Awesome, simply awesome. I'm 65 and still riding. I have a genetic condition much like macular degeneration so I have no central vision. I love riding technical but have to do it from my peripheral vision. It makes it harder but feels so good when I can clean something. I've had to slow down but just enjoy being on the bike. Watching this let me know I still have quite a few good years left.

  • @bikerideventures9754
    @bikerideventures9754 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There's a common sentiment out there with many people sadly, that as you hit 40 roughly you have a tendency to automatically slow down and should just take it easy. As long as a person stays fit and does the activities they live regularly, there is no reason to slow down or avoid your favorite sports or activities. The only thing that should slow a person down is injuries, not your age. Ride until you simply cannot because your body won't let you. Good on you Betty!

      My buddies and I started mtn biking 38 years to give us something to do during the off season from snowboarding, we’re all 55 now and ride weekly winter and summer. Whether it’s mtn biking or boarding we run into young guys on the hills or chair lifts and they always trip when they find out our ages, mostly because they have a tough time keeping up.
      One thing I like to stress to them is if you really love the sport and don’t seriously injure yourself, you’ve got at least 40 more years of riding.

    This video was VERY inspiring! Thank you both! I turn 60 in September and started back mountain biking last year because my grandson needed a partner! I was very nervous at first, but am regaining confidence with each ride. My grandson encourages me to try things that I otherwise may never try. The sport of mountain biking is all-inclusive, amazing, and teaches many life lessons!

    And for any non-Trail Forks readers:
    5th Horseman is 1 of 14 double-blacks in Cypress. Here’s the description (TF writeups tend to be far more casual than reality, especially for north shore, btw):
    “Very steep with steep mandatory rock features with high consequence sections. Contains natural and man-made TTFs. Not a beginners trail.”
    #RESPECT!!

Thanks to you I also got to know Mrs. Birrell's story 🙂 It's just fantastic. When I had my dark states, I wanted nothing, and when I came out of them, I wondered if it is possible to achieve something after 40? Now I hope and greatly admire Betty Birrell. This is super cool! hopefully, when I am her age I can ride as well (I'm 16 so I still have a ways to go). I can also relate to how scary gap jumps are to work up to, and then you do it and it is way easier than you think it would be. Also Remy, I really like how you have started to do videos with non-pro mountain bikers it makes your videos much more relatable.

Mentally age can be just a number but unfortunately not physically. It’s how well you accept the consequences should you screw up...
