    Big Tony Nowak, the guy laughing, has an interesting story. He passed away a decade or so ago while on vacation in Italy of a heart attack. Arnold mentioned him in his autobiography several times. Basically any jacket that you see Arnold wearing to events and in movies, was designed by Tony. He grew up in Poland and moved to Austria as a young boy, crossing paths with Arnold along the way. I always figured in Pumping Iron, Tony was a very minor person around the gym. Truth is, Arnold and him were very close friends. Went on to become a very successful businessman.

      Great story overcome! Thanks so much for sharing it on the page for everyone. I remember reading that he had passed recently. I wonder how Arnold feels seeing his contemporaries slip away one by one. It's a shame that life is so fleeting and that we're all only young for such a short time. Carpe diem brothers.

So Frank, Boyer and Chris betrayed him, too. Not only Arnold. When he means that he had won, why he wasnt second? I met Mike a few times and reminds him as a quiet and nice man. • @salvadorromero9712
    @salvadorromero9712 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    As a bodybuilder, even the most modestly sized MP pretty boy, you are forced to give up the grind and downsize if you are interested in a serious modeling or acting career. This is true *especially* for "handsome guy with muscles who takes his shirt off" roles. I chose to give up my own (very modest) acting "career" about 40 pounds ago (they were mostly teen versions of such roles anyway, since I'm so short lol), but I'm still fascinated over this choice that other MP guys have to make.
    I had always assumed that it had started with Arnold, since before him bodybuilders were mostly cast in "bodybuilder" superhumanly-big-monster roles and were doing it at much more modest mass. Now that I've looked into it, I was shocked to be wrong. Not only was Arnold told to downsize to play a *bodybuilder* (!); but as early as 1949 Steve Reeves of all people was told by Cecil B. DeMille to lose lots of that ugly muscle to play *Samson* ! I was shocked!
    All this is probably out of the wheelhouse of fitness media (though it probably shouldn't be, since it's been a major part of the historical and practical professional reality of many athletes in our community from the highest level to the masses), but the overall phenomenon of deliberately downsizing in the offseason is fascinating in and of itself. I think in the era of redlined pharmacology it's actually become *less* common, since things have become so competitive. Kevin Levrone is the only modern figure I can think of who ever did so though I may be wrong; what a genetic freak he was! The very idea of doing so seems crazy for someone trying to bring their best body to the stage next season and edge out their competitors. I think the offseason downsizing thing is worth someone's attention as a topic.

    • @carvedouttastone
      @carvedouttastone  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, it's amazing how the golden era off-season actually meant "off" - off drugs, off training, off bulking. Bodybuilding was a seasonal activity to these guys. Explains their great health, their fresh looks, full heads of hair (Mike Katz not withstanding). Maybe we're all misguided with this mindset of perpetual dedication to redlining everything like you said. Thanks for commenting

    It's a shame Arnold lost that weight for Stay Hungry, it would have been great to see him on stage looking like his 74 version or even better. Meanwhile Nubret was too much of a threat, was therefore disqualified only to be reinstated after he'd visibly lost some weight and some of his conditioning. As for Padilla, well he then went on to become the uncrowned 1981 Mr Olympia!

      What amazes me is that Arnold still recovered the weight along with condition in time to still look pretty damn good. But yeah, a 1974 Arnold in the movie would have looked great - but also maybe a little too intimidating for audiences of the time. 75 struck that perfect mainstream look that garnered the requisite public acceptance

    There are over 100 hours of outtakes from PUMPING IRON. Some of these have been released but if you strung them all together they run maybe 20 minutes. That leaves a lot of classic footage from legendary bodybuilders in the actual Golden Era. It blows my mind what might actually be on there. I believe ARNOLD owns the rights I wish he would just release it all. Do you have any thoughts on this matter?

    • @carvedouttastone
      @carvedouttastone  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I mentioned it briefly in the Truth video, and I was talking about that in some of the threads on previous videos. But yes, it pains me that he won't release that footage.
      He's had all the "bad bits" taken out and burned a few years ago - scenes that were incriminating to his image were removed by his legal team- so I really don't see what his problem is, considering that:
      1) millions of gym rats and iron historians would LOVE to see the other bodybuilder plot lines and footage - all that footage of Serge, Zane and Padilla locked away and rotting
      2) there's so much training footage in those reels
      3) it would rehabilitate his dying legacy because a Pumping Iron resurgence would wash away the stains of his recent image problem among his fan base.
      I'll talk about this more in the next vid, but man, I'd love to see that footage.

      The Problem isT Every fan pushes his fav and oversee his weak points. And 99,99 % of all fans never saw their idols in competition on stage, only on film and pics. An example: You see Nubret or Robby, or Roy Callender and scream wow he must be the winner! But in fact you see the calves of Roy, Sergio or Robby for judge with Mike Mentzers or other and you see the difference. Or see the difference between Padillas Chest and Franco (in his prime). See the dream posing of Corney and the bad posing of Ferrigno (that time) and you see that Lou's BIG Mass cant beat Ed's movements. But yes, sometimes its open to see betrayal and politics, 81 and 82 not the best one won, and Arnold got Mr.O without any other comeptitor that day. In a real and good field of competitors you have a few nearly same good guys and the the difference is by minimalistic things.

Arnold played up his behaviour in the film years afterwards as being dramatic license because he was running for governor and needed some deflection to filter his image - but butler argued that the film was very real to the events and characters with only a hint of direction here and there (eg the tshirt incident, Matty's involvement, some rivalry tension). Very few, if any documentaries are pure in their objectivity.

      Weider totally controlled the IFBB, the money that the pros got, the magazine coverage, everything. As a youngster at the time I knew Weider was a dictator in bodybuilding. However, he recognised in Arnold, the best vehicle to make bodybuilding more popular to the public. He was correct.

    For those who blames that Arnold is the big one in this film (blabla Politics bla, thisone or thatone isbetterbla): Arnold was the Titan between 69 and 75, with many Mr Universe and Mr Olympia titles. Arnold was the top Star in the original book Pumping Iron (72) for the Mr O and Corney for the Universe (and Katz). Arnold was in 75 the most known BB in the US and nearly a household name, he was in many TV shows, Newspapers outside BB Mags and had a few cameos in TV and Movies. So when you want to make a Docu about BB in 75 for people outside the barbell world you take the BB with the name most people knows. Arnold was EVER looking for the limelight and Press, and in fact: In 75 or 79 EVERYBODY knows the Name Arnold Schwarzenegger (Hes the Muscleman, right?) but nobody outside the BB Mags knowed Sergio, Frank Zane or somebody else.

      @@carvedouttastone Things have changed since what we now sometimes call the Golden Era. I miss the well written articles in the magazines the most. Social Media is no substitute for the journalism the sport once enjoyed, including good photographers. Especially pro BB has lost some of its style, selling freaks rather than Greek gods to the masses. On the other hand, it could not forever remain a subculture of enthusiasts.

    Great video, I first saw pumping iron for the first time in 1980 I went on to watch it about fifty times in my life. Things sure weren't fair back then were they? Joe and Ben bordered on criminal behavior when it came to anything having to do with Arnold, which of course is why he won again in 1980 when he actually should have placed fourth!
    I've been to the Weider office in Woodland Hills California where it all began. I've walked around in Joe's office, it was very surreal.

    To jave put all these amazing bodybuilders in pumping iron and to give them the same.attention as lou, Arnold and Katz, would of meant that the movie would jave run foe another 100 minutes. I personally would have loved this but they needed to sell this to the general public so having a 2 and a half 3 hour movie about bodybuilders may have scared away many potential viewers.

    • @carvedouttastone
      @carvedouttastone  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Agreed and I made that exact point at the beginning; it's more of a hypothetical, what if analysis, including some backstory of people who were definitely shut out of the production despite having hours of filming behind them. I personally think the Katz Waller sidestory a little weak - and could have been replaced with many other alternative character arcs or narratives
