I was lucky enough to satellite into the 2007 main event. I had dreams of winning it all but was knocked out 30 mins before day 1 ended. It was still the best moment of my life when I qualified. Fair play Chris, I had no idea he lost all the money though paying people. Such a shame.
It wasn’t a shame. He took their money to support himself before. He had to pay the taxes and percentages. And his wife was entitled to at least half or more

The hand with Ivey was the sickest hand of the tournament. The guy was writing to win before he went to Vegas and I believe it.
This is some of the worst editing I have ever seen, the music is way too loud and annoying and the audio from the people speaking is also empty and sounds terrible.
He sucked out on Phil Ivey but I do owe this man a hell of a thanks for inspiring me and getting me into that I have loved for over 15 years

This is actually a very damning story for most aspiring poker players. It makes you believe the best way to get out of a gambling debt is to gamble more strategically. Working harder is the surest way, but then sometimes you hit the lottery-that’s why people play. But statistically you lose and lose big. Chris is the anomaly. In a million other realities Chris runs bad and is divorced and homeless. Don’t try this at home, kids!

yet he was able to make 1.2 million more since 2003 after he lost all his ME cash. But sure, lets blame luck for your shortcomings instead on yourself.

But you both think Poker is gambling, it is not.There are many people who lives off poker. Chris ability is not a rare thing. there are many people just like him. Poker is really a game of skills, you'd be surprise how deep and complex the game really is. A player who is actively studying the game, will easily crush those who are not. its that simple.
like a famous quote in the gambling world says "There is no such thing as luck, it is all mathematics". why do you think casinos are still in business? because even though they have 2% odds advantage over the player, that slight advantage in the long run the casinos will be the winner and the players will be the losers. Pro poker players are constantly searching for those slight odds in their favor, thats how they make their money.
Haha imagine thinking playing poker is a hard way to earn a fortune. Try roofing in summer or boxing or literally anything that doesn't involve sitting in a comfy chair and playing a card game.

Okay, six minutes into this documentary Chris explains that he was playing poker here and there, but mainly he was traveling the country meeting clients for his job as an accountant.... but after he wins a bunch of money and is offered a job to travel and promote a poker company, his wife is so opposed to him traveling for work that she divorces him....
Yeah.... She saw the golden parachute and pulled the cord. Never marry boys. Never.
He said that she was always opposed to it. Wouldn’t you, if your spouse wanted to be gone all the time? He chose poker over his wife and daughter, it’s a tragic story.
The real moral of the story: Don't get married. Pay for the insurance, you'll save money in the long-run.

I had no idea of these details! The story is even more incredible than I ever imagined. Chris is a solid dude, a good father, and a decent person. Total respect.

I got into poker in late 04. I was raised in Los Angeles California and quit my job to cut my teeth in the 2005 wsop live games and satellites. It was when all the tournaments would be run in that one big warehouse space that was probably close to 1 million square feet. It was huge. All the chip shuffling in that room sounded like locusts I’ll never forget. They used to have this convention thing before the main and I got a bunch of free stuff and met all the pros I started admiring on tv. I met Chris and like a naive beginner I asked him if he thought he was gonna win the main that year. He said yeah, I feel good. And then I took a pic with him which I still have. I met Stu Ungars wife and his daughter who was like my age and actually stood her up on a date for that same night we met. I was supposed to come back to the same area where we met at an exact time. But I was busy no doubt trying to become the best like her dad. Well, I came home almost broke a few months later, but the California games were no match. I had that Vegas stench on me and was unstoppable. Then I found PS and FTP online. Played on absolute and signed a professional contract in 06 to be a red player. I remember almost winning my first Sunday million and making 7 final tables all at once on a Sunday. I was taking massive swings but I wasn’t as good as it took like the , Kevin Saul, Justin Little, good2cu, Fischman, Boyd, Scott clements, etc etc were. So on the first Black Friday I was dropped from sponsorship. That day was October 13, 2006. It used to be like having an atm in my room because we could load and unload via debit card. It’s 2020 and now I’ve been living in Vegas for 5 years still chasing the dream. I can’t give it up. Idk why. But I’m careful about it and I think that’s my downfall. I have a good job and have lost that hunger and drive I had to play 24 hours a day 7 days a week. If I wasn’t playing I was watching it. If I wasn’t watching it I was reading it. If I wasn’t doing any of those it’s cause I was sleeping. The passion to become a champion isn’t as strong as it was back then. But this moment here rn after all the struggles and moments I’ve been through that have led me to my faithful apartment in Las Vegas. After having to cancel my suite at the rio and building a bankroll I haven’t held onto in years for this years wsop because of the pandemic. If it’s not one thing it’s another. In 05 I remember praying to god and asking him not to turn me into an overnight sensation. But to give me 10-15 years of hard nosed learning to be an adult in every single aspect of my life before I become a champion. And I guess that prayer came true. Because I’m definitely more well rounded rounded and my health is not good rn probably is to the stress. But I have hope. And I stay positive. In this moment right here rn, it feels like 05 again. I have that burning passion back. Just like you should. Because supposedly if you have a dream, you’re supposed to keep going for it until it comes true...

Come on lets admit it Chris got very lucky time and time again, beating AA with pocket 88s. Then flopping a straight with 10 J against AQ suited, beating a full house against the great Phil Ivey when he fluked a 2 outer at the river against an already made hand, and many more hands. Its as if Chris had a poker angel giving him the flucky card he needed, it was just unbelievable to watch, time and time again he got the card he needed against the odds too. But I was very glad to see Chris win, he had the heart and he had the guts to push his chips over the line even when he was behind. Well done Chis,

Me, I have a degree in computer-science, a notoriously difficult and "prestigious" degree. I quit my job after 2 years because I make more money swing-trading & driving uber, and I'm not someone's bitch.
I played with Chris for awhile at a tournament, on a river-boat in Gary, Indiana. Nice dude. Class act. He actually bummed a ciggy from me lol.
He got annoyed at me in the tournament lol, because I called his all-in with J4, JUST to knock him out LOL....He said, "THAT'S why I hate being known in the poker-world."
Then, I saw how he became the world-champ. The flop came J42, I flopped two pair, against his KQ. Next card 2, then K. His two pair won lol.
It was only a 400$ entry, I didn't give a shit.

even when he won, he lost, he got extremely lucky so many times in that tournament , the ex wife seen the green and made like a machine, probably thought he would gamble it all away and to divorce then was a perfect time,

This is the story of a compulsive gambler. At 13-14 years old I saw him win the wsop and wanted to be a professional gambler. Now I'm in recovery and the happiest I have ever been. There is hope through Gamblers Anonymous and a spiritual practice. 🙏🏼

Jake B because I didn’t realize he had such a long history playing poker and was a career gambler. After he won, they always portrayed him as the “aw shucks” good ol’ boy type who sort of stumbled into victory. That was a false narrative. He was actually a longtime poker player with a gambling problem. That’s not inspiring to me.
Invention Reviews They did paint him out like that. But do you really think the whole backstory is true? And the whole winning the main and giving all the money away to his dad buddy and ex wife? I don’t believe that. Plus he was pokerstars face for 03. Most those players were making more in sponsorships than playing poker anyways.

There’s no such thing as “coming in first” in a multi satellite ticket prize pool.
Literally 3 players “came in first” after 4th place busts because they all get the same prize and the tournament ends!!!

Average joe. Chris Moneymaker, the family man wins 1.8 million dollars in the world series of poker. Each character he takes out is something out of a movie excecpt so much better because it's true. Pays his Dad and friend and finds himself in a divorce. Pays his wife the remaining 800k leaving him with nothing but the dream of a lifetime to travel, drink, do a line of coke and some hookers here and there... Oh and play poker. Famous but not in the spot light.
