Yamaha XS650. Starter fix strip down

Although it kick start works fine the electric start has never worked. The problem looks and sounds exactly like I have seen on another channel so I need to strip it down.

I learned something. I was blithely going to chuck 10w40 in mine, eventually, same as all my Hondas run on even the 70s ones and had not given a thought that it might need another oil. 20w50 Haynes says, which as it happens is one of the ones we stock for old Brits at Drags so means come the time I can at least get it at cost. I'm just , as such , a hobbyist myself despite my years in the trade and all the years of keeping my old bikes running, mostly basic, cheap tools although I learned early to avoid the real junk. The XS starter system is an unusual one though, I hope mine is going to work and give me no issues.

That horseshoe clip is in the correct place, only the original Yamaha ones actually fit in the slot, when you have problems getting the side casing off like you did, just pull on the right hand side and tap the kickstart shaft with your rubber mallet. Hope that helps

What year is the bike? Mine is an 81 but I don't remember the starter drive being on that side. Life and work got in the way of riding but getting back to it. Thanks for the info!

Don't lose the tiny washer off the end of the rev counter drive.

What end? The end where it connects to the cable?
