    Just a note on the commutator surface, color. It looked like the brush path was a bluish color. This is perfect meaning the brush spring tension is perfect. Too weak brush spring tension will ultimately create pitting on the commutator segments . Too strong tension will cause the copper to remain bare and raw with even grooving into the segments. There is no real need to remove the bluing except cleaning excess oil, debris. The uneven commutator brush path around the circumference can indicate non drive bush wear if a bearing is not there, which means the rotor also needs to be inspected for internal POLING. polling will make an abrasive noise during starting. Check the brushes Too as some have a worn indicator line on them so the copper leads inside the brush don't hit the commutator and damage the comm.The commutator can be measured in low ohm values across every adjacent segment and check they are all the same value. Hope this is a little informative. Good luck

  • @memybikeni9931

    You didn’t really need to pull the plugs out to do that, with no stator cover fitted there is no pulse to the TCI or plugs as the pulser coil is fitted inside the cover along side the stator and needs the rotor to power it. Good find, you could clearly see the 2nd idler gear spinning and failing to engage on the starter clutch while you were trying to turn it over. Hope a new kit doesn’t set you back too much. A good second had one should be ok.

    • @motorcyclerescuer
      @motorcyclerescuer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I knew the plugs didn't need pulling.
      In the end it only needed new bolts as the originals had rattled loose. The starter clutch itself was in good condition. So only cost £10 roughly to fix.
      Thanks for watching

    • @memybikeni9931
      @memybikeni9931 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@motorcyclerescuer HT leads I meant, but no harm either way. So if those bolts were stripped/sheared, is the rotor ok, have you got to drill remaining threads out ?

    • @motorcyclerescuer
      @motorcyclerescuer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have you not watched the catch up vids? The vid or 2 after this shows the full fix?
      All original nuts were recovered, no damage had been done to the threads thankfully and the new nuts were secured in by tapping the end of the bolts as they do in the factory and extra locktight was added which they don't do in the factory.

    It seems to be a thing with yammy Vtwins. I went to look at a bt1100 at a used bike dealership. They knew I was coming to buy it. When I got there he said the starter clutch was knackered just like all of them ! I ended up buying an xjr1300 from him. That day. So why didn't they fix the bt1100? They were waiting for a buyer before they invested time and parts !! Sounds backwards to me.

    If you haven't got one. A proper impact driver will save you a bunch of hassle with the case screws and any other screws for that matter. You mash it with a hammer and it turns itself. One of the best tools I own.

      It's very common. The bolts that hold the starter clutch to the rear of the stator housing rattle loose. They didn't use lock tight in the factory which is silly.
      I always wondered why this engine sounded rough. I think this starter clutch has been loose for a while causing the rattle.
