I said this from the beginning that this game looked like Hasbro looked at the success of Shredder's Revenge and said "We need to get in on this too" but instead of going with a good developer, just decided to go with the lowest bidder.
@@bertnbirdgaming4315The art direction looks like it's attempting to mimic Shredder's Revenge, but yeah, that's really the only thing they have in common.
When I played Command and Conquer back in 1995, I was blown away by how awesome and addictive the game was (and still is), and I thought to myself “Why has no one created a GI Joe RTS game?”. Fast forward almost 30 years and I am still asking myself the exact same question.
Hey, I'm Andrew One and i was actually the composer for the majority of the soundtrack on this game (Tee Lopes just did a couple of songs). So, despite the less positive review i have to say i'm actually happy with your appreciation of the music! Thank you!!
I'm a big G.I. Joe fan! I've played a lot of those games. I enjoyed "Operation Blackout". I like side scrolling beat 'em ups... this looks decent to me. I think I will purchase this game. Mostly for the G.I. Joe factor. Thanks for your review.
They could have at least thrown in 2 vehicle levels as bonus stages. Would have been better than nothing. Theres no bonus stages and no cut scenes in between stages. Not sure why theres a "story mode" when there is no story.
Yeah, that behind the back run and gun arcade game was sick! The graphics were bright, and the sprites were huge. I dropped so many quarters in to that thing at Aladdin's Castle.
Sadly, this looked like a turd from the first trailer, but I held out hope, and once the final trailer released, it appeared like nothing had changed. This would have been fine if it released back in the Final Fight arcade days, but beat em ups like this have come so far(SoR4, Shredder's Revenge, etc.). When you can't even be bother to do a color palette swap for the same characters, it is beyond doubtful anything else will be that great. Look at the Power Rangers Rita's Rewind, and while that hasn't released, they at least tried something new with the 3D levels. That would have been killer for GIJ as they had adventures in the sea, the air, so many cool things could have been done, or at least tried. But this just looked lazy as hell from day one, and sadly this review just confirmed what I saw in each new trailer and demo footage.
I'm not buying something if it only works half the time. I can wait for the updates. I pray they will fixed all errors. If I'm paying for something.. I want it to work all the time
Funny enough the beat ‘em up conveyor belt means the genre is BACK. There used to be so MANY 5/10 beat ‘em ups back in the day. Made the good ones that much more satisfying. We love to see it! Weird I know.
@@coris3436. Absolutely. His figure is one of my favorites. Go back and look at his figure and u may change ur mind. He has a great realistic military look. Ripcord, recondo, hit n run, footloose, stalker V1. All great figures with great accessories.
A bit surprising, but still not a bad character. HALO qualified, demolitions expert, but yeah, never seemed to play a prominent role in the cartoon and I agree, a bit of an odd choice for a side scroll beat 'em up or just to be added in in general.
G.I. Joe would make for an AWESOME Warframe-esque looter shooter. Given the sheer number of characters in G.I. Joe AND Cobra, a character collection game would be amazing. Imagine being able to play as Lowlight, Quick Kick, Beachhead, Freedom, or even Shipwreck and Polly! Or flip the script and play as Stormshadow, Alley Viper, a B.A.T, or Tomax and Xamot! This isn't the right genre for G.I. Joe.
Yeah the demo looked bad, the release trailer looked bad, and so.... I am getting it and ordering pizza and I am gonna play the hell out of it with my brother. Thanks for the review! I am glad it is at least playable.
Those are just a few state bugs that probably got overlooked at the last minute. I’ve made that mistake before. I’m sure they’ll fix them in the next update. Game dev is hard, especially when there’s no end to end automated tests used (or checked lol)
The sad thing is, a brawler was the perfect fit for this franchise. I feared this was the situation after looking at gameplay footage and the timing of the strikes from the characters looked sluggish. Thanks for the review.
“Lack of polish” sums this up. With quality titles like SOR4 and Shredder’s Revenge out there, how could anyone release this? Instead of fan service, it’s fan-xploitation.
The *real* shame is Hasbro ignores the genre perfect for them: *Vehicular Combat* a.k.a. the _Twisted Metal_ genre. Hasbro has been wanting a "shared universe" for their IPs for over a decade. Many (most) had toylines with higher priced vehicles (G.I. Joe) or that _were_ vehicles (Transformers). A crossover game lets them cover the many, many _smaller_ IPs (CyberCops, M.A.S.K., Visionaries, etc.) that need the exposure but can't support their own title. *And it **_might_** even sell toys!* Y'know, the bottom line for Hasbro. Whether new molds or just re-releasing the classics, they get new life as "video game merchandise", with the _hope_ of re-launching at least one toyline.
Thought the graphics was great. The level design could use some variety. Some bosses were easy because you can just stand there and hit them. Other than that i had fun.
Given who this game is targeted for, the character size should’ve been more in line with X-Men arcade. Make it feel like a lost 80s arcade beat em up. Also, given the source material, the action should’ve felt way more GI Joe arcade bombastic (not the true use of the word, but you know what I mean). I give the small team props, but I was in the beta and the game just didn’t grab me.
I need Toxic Crusaders to be released. Also, Operation Blackout wasn’t that bad of a game. At least you can play as Cobra and his team. There aren’t that many games where you can play as Cobra Commander.
I'll believe it when I see it. I wasted time about 25 years ago. I was looking for a GI Joe game PS2 "Operation Cobra." That was advertised in a few of my magazine subscriptions. Only to find out that the game was never produced. I've already called a few of the game stores. That I usually buy my games from. NO ONE knows what I'm talking about! For now, I'm calling BS on this one.
They've been working on this for years but it's still bad? That's kind of strange. I thought this was the same company that made the turtles game? Guess not. Still waiting for the toxic avengers game too.
I loved shredder’s revenge. This looks cool but really too repetitive even for a beatem up. Should’ve been more variety for the troops/vipers. And 2 boss spots shouldn’t have been wasted on made up dark versions of Joes. They could’ve been Scrap Iron & Copperhead(or Wild Weasel). And the dreadnoks should’ve been on it somewhere!
The dark versions of Joes as bosses was just lazy. I'd rather they just cut those levels out entirely. Also very strange how you fight Storm Shadow after Destro and Cobra Commander. The boss order is all wrong.
Had high hopes for the beat em up genre after River City Girls and Streets of Rage 4 blew away my expectations. Double Dragon Gaiden was a disappointment. Ninja Turtles was decent. Toxic Crusaders doesn’t interest me at all and sorry to see GI Joe being a disappointment. I really like the 2 GI Joe NES games. Wish they would release both of them.
I get this is just a me thing, but I wish these nostalgia games would at least attempt their own art designs of the characters. I didn't grow up with the 80s cartoon but I can always appreciate how cool in concept design these guys look so it's always cool to see new takes on them, so always seeing "the 80s look but worse" is very boring for me. I really dig the attempt at progression though. I will probably pick this up on a sale.

This is nice as this looks we need a proper Joe game in the retro style of Contra or Metal Slug.
A proper run & gun , not a brawler.
Operation Blackout was an average third person shooter, but at least it had the series/movie music to back it up.
Gears or war or Mass Effect gameplay is what needed for a G.I.Joe game
The arcade game was the best
The real question is would anyone want to play this game if it didn't have the GI Joe characters in it? I doubt it.
If there is enough Joe fans and game fans like this game so much that G.I. Joe Wrath of Cobra could need a sequel someday.
