Yeah you missed out. Nightslashers and a bunch of other great games were released by Johnny Turbo for a short period of time and now they’re all gone. Luckily I bought a bunch of them when I did. I’ll probably buy this version just to check it out, but you can’t beat the awesome graphics from back in the day. The new version is just to clean.
The biggest problem I have with this game's presentation is that they didn't push it as much as I feel they should have. I think the character / story art looks fantastic, but the game fumbles with its implementation of 3D models. They're clearly going for a style to emulate the sprites, but didn't go far enough to actually push to match the character art. The character art has really expressive eyes and sleek body types and the feeling is that they tried to approximate that on rather generic looking models without pushing the proportions of the faces. The lack of hit stop is also an issue as the gameplay looks far too slippery. They seem to want the ease of use that comes with 3D modelled characters without actually pushing the aesthetics of genuine sprite emulation. The key poses look very, for lack of a better word, realistic and don't convey a lot of power on hit - which makes the core loop of the game unsatisfying. It wouldn't bother me as much if I didn't see where this game could have simply put in a bit of extra TLC and had something that could have looked great. Instead, it just stands hanging over the side, unwilling to fully plunge. That actually bothers me more than if it had just looked bad. If it had just looked like the GI Joe beat-em-up, I wouldn't have cared at all and written it off.
the game sounds like it needs a patch to fix the lives and control mapping bugs and issues. and maybe it needs something like Streets of Rage 3 features, a lite level up system up to level 3 or 5, that will increase the player's attack damage, heath/defense, speed, special damage, by like 10 percent. and a slow recharge special power meter.
Update: A patch was just released, and the game plays MUCH better now. I couldn't even get past Stage 3 on Easy because of the laggy controls and relentless enemies, but now the controls are fixed. The retro soundtrack is included... not sure if that was in the patch or when the game was originally released. I feel like this is a huge step in the right direction, as the game is now much more fun to play, and I'm hoping soon they'll release the retro-look to make everything right. Fingers crossed.

Assuming they could do so competently, another two new characters could have helped diversify gameplay.
Joe, I believe Night Slashers was delisted from the eShop a year or two ago. A few other Data East games, too. I'm hoping the original at least makes it to Evercade in another collection.

If they were going to replace the glorious old pixel art with such a smoothed out simple art style, then they should've used 3D cell shading instead. At least then any visual 'spark' lost from the removal of pixel art would be replaced by true 3D perspective and backgrounds. And 3D tends to suit the new art style they chose (see the upcoming Mayhem Brawler 2 for an example of a 3D-polygon-based beat em up that looks like this). Instead, they kept it 2D but used vastly inferior art.

always wanted to play the Og arcade game . this is on the playstation store for $7.99 seems its not worth it
We’re they going for a comic book kind of vibe? It’s just not really a pleasing art to the eye. Props to them for trying but I’ll stick to Shredders Revenge. I appreciate the review! 🤙🏻
The original was delisted before the release of the remake
In case anyone is curious about the original and its look.

I will buy before delisted
so no new male playable hero? can you play the same character?
Streets of rage did great things for new beatm-ups. But cursed the world with its art style. It works for them but every other beat-up as flooded the market. It's extremely poorly done here too.
yes considering the only way to play this is on mame or or an actual arcade system.
Night Slashers isn't on the e-shop because what you mean is called Night Trap. Night Trap had the controversy together with Mortal Kombat, not Night Slashers. Which makes the whole "morality" spiel by politicians look even goofier.
Not totally sure I am reading this comment correctly but Night Trap is mentioned in the review!
a rusty lamp, for a rusty looking remake 😆
Well at least you guys didn't blow 400 million making this blunder.
I like the idea of a horror beat em up but yeah the art style doesnt look great
Original is on Antstream
I love beat em ups, but this random resurgence of the genre is making me feel like most are cash grab attempts.
Physical?
Another Data East game, Joe and Mac, got remade with an awful artsyle too.
God please just release an arcade archives instead
I think it's pretty
I’m going to avoid this one like the plague
Just bought this on PS5, extremely disappointing.
Graphics are ok but I hate the gritty film grain that they added that you cant disable. Also had the same issues with controls and button mapping, surely someone noticed this during testing before release. My character also has a habit of running when I am walking about.
Not a fan of tablet art. The original art was so much better. E-Zpass. I'll just play the original.
Visuals are way too clean and kinda cheap looking. Fun game, but I'm passing on this remake. I'll play the og on our iiRcade in the game room.
I'm not a fan of the new style, it legit looks worse! I wished the original game was included in this.
Original looks better. Bet it plays better too. The aesthetic looks so generic here.
