I hate that even the Samsung budget phones aren't accompanied by a charger anymore. Then again, I think it's cool how far these budget phones have come: 5 years ago... USB-C, 64 GB ROM, a camera setup with more than one lens and a fingerprint sensor were exclusive to premium-tier models. Let alone 5G and 90Hz displays which even the most expensive phones didn't have at that time.

I ditched my old galaxy A50 for this phone (because it was free for me), and it really shows how much they added to the A series since 2019. The A13 is slightly worse than the A50, but the overall performance is better, even though it's technically lower end.
These are the main things I noticed that may or may not change people's mind if they switch from an older, but higher end phone:
    - The screen isn't an AMOLED screen, the color is more dull, and viewing angles are worse. The resolution is only 720P, so pixels are noticeable.
    - The speaker is slightly better than older A series phones, but not as good as S series phones. There is more bass on this phone compared to my old A50, but some notification tones don't sound as good, such as alpha. Some tones are quieter than others.
    - The fingerprint scanner on the power button is snappy, but annoying to use. When used with a case, it often doesn't register as easy as if you don't use a case. Also, it's much more picky than other scanners. The A13's fingerprint scanner doesn't detect my fingerprint if my fingers are slightly wet from sweat, or holding a cold drink.
    - The camera is higher resolution than older generations, but the image produced is worse than older A series phones, such as my A50. The screen also makes images look washed out and less vibrant.
    - The screen is one huge fingerprint magnet, and the fingerprints don't rub off like other phones! Alcohol just causes residue, and microfiber cloths just smear the fingerprints. Adhesive dust removers are the only thing I find to work when cleaning the screen.
    - The blue light filter is really bad on LCD displays! on AMOLED, blue light filter gives a subtle yellow tint to the display, but with LCD, the filter makes everything look orange, including the gray UI elements in dark mode.
    - Haptic feedback is much worse! The vibration motor is very cheap compared to the ones found in higher end phones. The motor spins up and down, rather than quickly buzzing. This makes it feel much worse when using it for haptic feedback. Vibration patterns are less desirable, because the cheaper vibrator motor affects the way it feels/sounds.
Overall, This is a decent upgrade from an older A series device of a lower spec. If you have an A10e, A20, A30, or newer versions of these phones, this is a good upgrade. If you have an A50, A70, or S series device, I'd go with a slightly higher end phone, like the A33, which has an AMOLED screen, and more features than this A13 5G.

The processor has been a real surprise to me. Combined with 5g service (which is amazing at this price level: I paid $100 for the phone at Walmart), it's a much faster device than I would have ever expected, it beats out the A53 even (which I had to return for being sluggish, probably saddled with a processor that can't handle the display quality, which was, to be fair, much better than the A13).

Just got this phone yesterday and I'm digging it so far. I came from a 7-year-old Samsung, so this phone is light years better. I basically use it for email, text, phone and a tiny bit of internet. I'm told the camera isn't that good, but I rarely take photos. So, for a simple user like me, I would definitely recommend.

It's hilarious to me that this phone (which you can now get for $100 at Walmart) could even remotely be called out for its "subpar camera". For a $100 device, it's phenomenal. I remember my first digital camera in 2004 and it easily rivals those photos. It's for making good 4x6 pictures, not poster size.

I have the Samsung A13 G80 variant. Having owned Android phones since 2009 HTC Hero and many many flagships, in between including Notes, I just needed a cheap phone quickly and in all honesty this phone is great for the money. TIP: Turn off the animations and it will feel so much snappier.

  • @DWtechfan
    @DWtechfan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +132

I’ve never owned a Samsung phone before but this one looks really good for a budget device. I’ve seen reviews on it and people mostly complain about the display, cameras, and lack of dual speakers. Those things are important but for $250 you’ll trade some things on any phone in that price range. I’d rather have great performance with calls, texts, surfing the web, and general use. Displays aren’t a huge deal to me because I’ve never owned an amoled over the top phone. Cameras at this price point aren’t gonna be great either but it gets the job done. Dual speakers would be the biggest problem for me because it makes a huge difference. Again though, considering it’s price the A13 offers a lot and those things aren’t dealbreakers. Trust me, if you get a current Motorola at that price range you’ll get trade offs too. You’ll get dual speakers and maybe a slightly better display but you’ll have atrociously horrible phone call quality, processors that don’t age well, and limited updates to support the device. For the price segment, you gotta decide which trade offs you can live with. The A13 5G looks really good for what it does for the price.

@Dylan Dunavin the thing is Motorola has a lot of awesome qualities. Like excellent battery life, my favorite Lock Screen notifications you can preview, love the Moto actions, the media controls with the volume keys to skip tracks, and love the battery ring that shows on the time circle where you battery percentage is. They get a lot right but then wind up getting lazy on basics and it ruins the experience.

Thank you for this insightful and informative review. I'm considering this phone as a cheap switch from an iphone SE 2020 that I honestly can't stand anymore due to small screen that isn't immersive for media, doesn't have a headphone jack nor expandable storage, and, I've personally found the newer ios increasingly glitchy. I hate having a physical home button to click that sometimes doesn't even activate(ios glitch I'm assuming). I also hate the new ios16 notifications even if changed from the default jumbled together option, I hate how it goes from the bottom to top on ios16, also, battery capacity is blah. I heard the cpu in this A13 5g is actually better than the more expensive A53 and is faster. As I've gotten into my mid 30s, I finally understand the people who used to say in the past they weren't big into photos and stuff or selfies, I don't really take them anymore, only the occasional cat pic, to be honest in the past I had always used budget phones, and they seem to have majorly improved the past few years compared to what they used to be. I'm going to choose this over a similar Moto phone since basically non of the US Motos ever have NFC for contactless payments for some weird reason

Budget phone with 4 gigs RAM, 64 gigs storage, Micro-SD support, headphone support, and NFC: Good deal -- very, very good deal. I'm currently using an A71 5G from T-Mobile, and just bought an A53 5G to replace it. I would recommend the A13 5G to my brother and roommates, for sure. In regard to the lack of a charger, I'm not worried. Decent chargers can be had for under $20, and many of us have leftovers from previous phones, or have dedicated charging stations with multiple ports.

Owning this phone, I'd give it a 4/10. I recently broke my Samsung A20, causing me to buy a new phone. Without looking at reviews before buying it, I instantly bought it. And was very disappointed that for a triple camera lens, the top lense is not even accessible. The zoom quality is terrible, and the worst part is that unlike the A20, the A13 doesn't have a wide angle camera, which really helps me our on taking vehicle photos. I'm really looking forward to getting something much better than this phone, hopefully I can switch to iPhone for good.

Having said that older version has faster screen but lower res, worse camera setup but better (and newer up to 2x faster) CPU and GPU and other bits that make it hard to pick one over the other. Samsung site does not list 5G at the moment...

For instance, one of the popular mobile networks, EE, give these (and most) phones away for free if you sign up for a two year contract at £19:99 (about $24) a month. For this you get unlimited talk time, unlimited text and picture messages and 50gigs of data. US prices seem expensive.
