    What are some other mistakes to look out for when making an edit??

      in addition to what you said about all your different areas of coverage when shooting an event, if you're looking around in a gym and thinking "huh i wonder what things look like from there" don't be afraid to take a few lenses and go find out. EXPERIMENT! This is an art just like any film and you have to be willing to try new things from new angles and vantage points.

    Thanks for the tips. i film two angles which must be synched in post. I therefore use looooong clips. Here is a tip I discovered. I use the nikon p900 superzoom as my second cam for rugby. When I set the aperture to be fixed to the maximum zoom aperture, which is 6.3 on that camera, the camera uses less battery, gets less hot and has almost zero autofocus lag when zooming in or out.

    Regarding short clips - for baseball/softball, do you recommend filming every single pitch and at bat?

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Depends on the objective of your video. If you absolutely need the biggest highlights then you probably should get all or most. I know there are some cameras that have a feature where when you click record it starts the recording from 3 seconds prior to when you hit the button, so that can help manage file sizes and only film hits or other significant moments. If your goal is to showcase the atmosphere at the ballpark then you likely don’t need to film every at-bat and can focus more on crowd stuff and more aesthetic broll shots.

    Great video!! I thought in one of your previous videos you said you use focus set to center? Do you always leave it on wide?

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah sorry I kind of go back and forth between the two depending on what I’m shooting. I find that if af is struggling a bit then it will perform better on centre and I’ll put it on centre if I’m doing a stabilization effect because that is easier when the subject stays in the same place on the screen, but otherwise I’ll usually leave it on wide. This can also change depending on what lens and camera combo you have so I’d recommend trying both and then deciding what’s best for you.

  • @caleby-f4112
    @caleby-f4112 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Which frame rate do you mainly shoot at? And would you intentionally shoot at different rates throughout a game or stay the same (guessing at 60fps or 120)? I feel like it can sometimes be harder to go up to 120 especially when using F-4 lenses (Big fan of the content!)

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mainly 120fps but occasionally also 24fps depending on the situation. I have a video on the channel about frame rates that goes into this in much more detail if you’re interested.

    Hey Peter, I just recently watched your saber video for after effects and I’m having a little trouble. I’m new so I may just be making mistakes still, but every time I apply the effect onto the mask the clip I’m using goes black. The effect is still on the screen shaped to the form of the mask, but the clip underneath doesn’t show. If you have any idea why this is could you let me know? Thanks, your videos are such a help!

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey there, the Saber effect has to be applied to a black solid that is a separate layer from the clip, not the actual clip itself. Once you put the Saber effect on the black solid set the black solid to screen or linear dodge blending mode and it will show through overtop of the clip. Hope this helps DaBaby

    Hey if im just starting out doing hs basketball games, should I record both teams just in case they ask for highlights or something?

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on who you’re filming for and what your client is asking of you. Generally filming both sides of the court is a good idea so that your can get defensive and offensive highlights, though if you’re hired to film by one team then you likely don’t need a whole bunch of footage of their opponent outside of a couple establishing shots. Alternatively if you’re filming for a league, which is the situation that I’ve found myself in most often, then you’ll want to make sure you’re carrying equal content of all teams and not playing any favourites.

    any tips for 1st person pov sports?

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I edited a video like that once and they had strapped a GoPro to the players head and had him go through a workout and that turned out to be pretty cool. You could try getting a really tiny camera as well like the Insta360 GO 2 and attach it to the subjects shirt for a less invasive POV setup. One big consideration with the action camera route is making sure you’re in a bright enough space because those cameras don’t do well in low light but if you do it outside or in a bright enough gym it could be cool.

      I film in movie mode but within movie mode you can choose from full manual or different types of auto like full auto, aperture priority and shutter priority. I use the manual setting in movie mode rather than any of those other options.

    Make sure you know where your buttons are on your camera. A shot an Australian Rules football game handheld. I kept accidentally pressing the WB button so it kept switching from Blue, to normal then to warmer.....

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah that’s such a big one! Especially considering how many custom buttons you can set on Sony mirrorless cameras it’s super important to make sure you’ve configured the settings properly well in advance of your shoot.

    Looking for advice: My Sony a6400 only films 4K footage at 24 or 30fps, but has 60fps option at 1080p. I’m just starting out so the 4K 24fps footage is great for single clip edits. Eventually I’ll want to have more clips with slo mo as an option, what would you recommend? Switch to the 60fps 1080HD or stick to 4K? I’m worried about the quality difference in the 1080 and 4K footage.

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I had my A7iii I was in a similar scenario, and I have friends who’ve had the same camera as you and were able to make great stuff filming full HD in slow motion. The a6400 can film 120fps so I’d suggest using that a lot when filming sports and then switching to 24fps only for specific instances where it’s unlikely you’ll need slow motion. You should be able to set up some custom settings on your camera to quickly switch between 4k24 and 1080p120 to make this easier to do on the fly.
