Still one of the best acting scenes in film history. Robert duvall always plays a character spot on. His mix of care and and don't care in this scene is iconic. capturing the brutality and also the calmness of war

@@slycarlo8747 Perhaps, but to my mind Kurtz understood that war was hell and to win you had to make worse hell than the other guy. He wanted power and understood how to get it. A kind of rational madness.

@@Moggy471 If you’ve only watched the newest cut of the movie I’d understand where you get that from but in my opinion he was meant to portray the cowards that commanded a lot of these men to go and die. He’s really never shown doing anything in the movie besides ordering other men to commit the violence while he revels in it once the enemy has been dealt with. Even during the helicopter attack scene, he is viewing the entire thing from a distance with Captain Willard through his binoculars. Kurtz embodies the exact opposite leader, a man willing to take himself to the edge of existence to accomplish his own personal goals. Kilgore was only committed to accomplishing the goals he was commanded to do, he might’ve enjoyed it, but they were never his plans, that’s what makes his actions sane.

'Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell? The whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end'

One of the top 3 war films ever made IMHO. So well written and acted. Terrific photography. And done BEFORE there was CG!!
Details....when the Vietnamese old woman approaches the Col with a baby....they don''t smack the old woman or shoot her and the baby (as would happen in some airhead type war film...low budget"....Col "Duvall" has the baby and old woman taken to safety. Well done. Small things...
Would have loved for the same people to have made the movie today....releasing AN on 4k Bluray with a Dolby Atmos track....reference qulity.....
