As a young 20-something, my first new car purchase was the first-year Nissan 300ZX turbo, black with T-top. I drove the heck out of that car, never crashed, never ticketed. Man I miss that car!

I traded a '91 Porsche 928S4 for your 300ZX TT back then. I added the Stillen mods to it so the turbo would boost more and what a handful it was when traction was poor. I somewhat miss it too but if you recall, it was a nightmare to work on as the engine bay was packed edge to edge with a bazillion hoses.

I thought about it after reading the title and before watching the video. I also came up with '93. Along with the ones you mentioned, It was the first year of the 4th gen Camaro/Firebird. Both of which had the LT-1, and massive improvements over the 3rd gen. Also it was the last year of the fox-body Mustang. The next year SN95 was a huge let down.

SVT suspension and sticky tires made the Focus handle brilliantly. The "holy grail" factory powertrain combo - the 2.3L 4 and 5-speed manual - were only available in two model years in California, sadly. A 2.5L swap from the Fusion and manual transmission really wake these up!

Hoovie got it wrong regarding the Pontiac 6000 STE. The STE is an entirely different animal compared to the "regular" 6000. The 6000 STE was on the the Ten Best list for three years, 1983, 84 and 85. The 6000 STE had better power train, suspension, alloy wheels with Goodyear Eagle GT tires and an awesome optional suede pigskin interior. I owned a new 1984 6000 STE that was my favorite car and is the car I'd happily own again. I've had an Olds Ninety-Eight, a Cadillac, Fleetwood, a BMW, a Nissan truck, a Ford F150, an Equus, an Audi, a Lexus, two Rolls-Royce, two Volvos and seven Mercedes-Benz and the 6000 STE beat them all.

Even though the start of the new millennium had some great cars, I do have to agree with April. The 1990s in general was a major turning point for the auto industry. Like you mentioned, it was exiting of the Malaise era and the return to performance and aerodynamics, things that were lost in the 1970s and 1980s. The early 90s in particular started off the decade with a bang, especially from the Japanese. Cars such as the Acura NSX, fifth gen Toyota Celica, MKIII Supra, Mazda MX-5 Miata, third gen Mazda RX-7, Lexus LS400, third gen Toyota Camry, were revolutionary designs in an era where most automakers were still hanging on to the dated and forgettable box designs from the 80s, especially the domestic brands. Eventually they would come into their own such as the SN-95 Ford Mustang, third gen Chevy Camaro/Pontiac Firebird, Dodge Stealth/Mitsubishi 3000GT, fifth gen Corvette, etc. Most of the designs still hold up today, performance, not so much. Good for the time but laughable by today's standards.

Sorry Hoovie but you're Wrong about the Pontiac 6000. There ARE indeed some still on the road you can find them on used car sites. I see 1 every now and then. Granted most are not in the best of shape.
I owned 2 Caprices both 86 and loved them both. Yes the 305 even with a 4 barrel was a weak engine but they were still comfortable cruisers and very reliable. C4 Corvette still my favorite. 87 Gran National and Monte Carlo SS (I owned an 87) and IROC Camaro were some of the coolest cars of the 80s.
Intrepid not reliable? Yeah I agree had a 94 with the 3.5 and transmission went out before 30k miles along with the air compressor and various sensors.. But once those were all fixed it actually wasnt all that bad. 3.5 was peppy for the time it had room for the kids. Put about 130k miles before trading it in.

Late 80's through the early 2000's one thing that sticks in my mind about 10 Best lists from C&D and M/T was that the vehicles fell in to two categories for the reason it made the list: Category 1 - it was a BMW or took BMW "money" to buy the car that made the list - when I looked at what made the list as a much younger man I always remarked "who can afford any of these cars?" the others (that one generally could afford fell in to the other category). Category 2 - while there was no "proof" you always knew in the back of your mind the manufacturer was paying (somehow) get on the list and the magazine would car-splain or come up with some "reason" why the car was groundbreaking or held some marvel of automotive engineering or technology. The notable exceptions were cars like Accord, Civic, Camry and a new for that year SUV thing.
Looking back on the lists you can see very clearly with 20/20 hindsight - lots of crap that didn't make the list and for good reason even before the car makers had only a year or two of production.

You might think the Focus was the "weakest" on that list, but let me tell you why it was great in comparison to its contemporaries in its class:
It was one of the first to offer telescoping steering column and height adjustable seats in the bottom of the barrel affordable compact car class.
And, they drove AWESOME. Ford came up with a new independent rear suspension with a unique geometry that made for an excellent handling front drive car. They called it the "control blade" independent rear suspension.
VW was so impressed with it that they literally poached the very engineer that created it for Ford so he could implement the same basic thing for VW's Mk5 generation Rabbit and Jetta.
Variations of the design are found across all sorts of different brands' vehicles nowadays. Ford is the originator of it, the Focus being the first one to get it.
The optional DOHC Zetec engines were no slouches either. The SVT version you pictured has a slick shifting close ratio Getrag 6 speed manual and epic sport seats too. The upgraded Zetec engine puts out 30 more hp than the stock version. When you're talking about a starting point of 140 hp, an extra 30 is pretty substantial.
I don't know how collectible the SVTs will be in the future, but I do occasionally find myself searching for one. I really like the first Gen Focus hatchbacks...
    And I'm a VW guy!

The Dodge Intrepid was a good car at the time when it first came out. The Cab forward design made it very roomy. With the 3.5 motor you had a reliable car. The 2.7 wasn't good and had oil sludge issues.

Another good car was W bodies with 4T60 Hydramatic transmissions. 3.1 and 3.8 3800 only. Cutlass supreme, Gand Prix, Buick Regal, Chevy Lumina, Die hard and terribly underrated. Probably because they such a common domestic car of the 90s era. Rust took these cars out. The transmissions were probably the best transmissions ever made. Yes bold statement.

My father worked for the Florida Attorney General's Beverage Department. He was in charge of moonshine raids in the panhandle. After always being beat in chases, the state bought GTO's - mostly 389 tripowers. They always caught the guys after that. It was such a different world back then.
