    Happy 100th!
    In 1978 my friend bought a Jaguar XJ6.
    The Dealer told him he should buy at least 2 spare long blocks, if he plans on keeping the car for 10 years.
    He bought 3!
    And used them all.
    He finally LS swamped it, and it's been bulletproof ever since. His kids even used it for college.

      The automatic in a Jag, is a GM Turbo 400,
      so it's an easy bolt up.
      Most of the wiring harness is GM too, so maybe 6 to 10 wires to splice under the hood.
      Each Jag block cost him $4K, his 350 Olds block cost $48.00, and 20 minutes, at a pick and pull, in 1991. Oh, and a $10 tip to the forklift guy, lol!

      I managed an independent auto leasing company in the 1970's & 80's, and we always told people wanting to lease a Jag they should lease 2 so they would have one to drive when the other was in the shop. We also hoped they would still think the car was pretty as they walked away from it on the freeway. 😂

      All those EVs with low costs... until you need to replace the battery. Then it's some other fool's problem? There is a reason used EVs depreciate like an old litter box. Once that battery warranty is up, they are effectively a salvage title or parts special waiting to happen. My Mustang? $1200 in 11 years. Timing chain and water pump. Everything else was consumables like tires and so on, which CR doesn't consider as a "repair".

    Tell that BS about Teslas to my friend who owns a 2019 Model X. In 84k miles, he's gone through 4 sets of tires and he's had the front CV joints replaced 5 times. Tesla covered the first 3 replacements, but he's had to pay for 2 sets of replacements at $2500/set. It's a known problem.

    • @plektosgaming
      @plektosgaming 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      And the battery pack WHEN, not IF it dies. Less cost while it's under warranty.. but once it's out of warranty.. 15K total to replace. That makes the numbers look small for the list, but 15K is.. that's a whole ENGINE in most cars. In some cars, that's a whole replacement drivetrain, as in turning it into a race car budget. Knowing I had a 15K bill coming eventually would almost make it disposable at 9 years, as it's not like an ICE engine where you can roll the dice and usually not need more than basic stuff done to it, especially if it's something like a little 4 cylinder in a Civic. My Mustang.. as an example, is at 130K and the engine is healthy. Maybe it will need a head gasket in 5-8 more years. maybe. Not an entire engine for sure, unless I really abuse it. The rear end - that old solid axle is going nowhere. The manual transmission - still on its original clutch.
      My in-laws had their model S' battery start to fail and were looking at a $20K+ bill. They sold it for $15K under market value just to get rid of it - and yes, lol - bought a new replacement. Fanboys can't be deterred I guess. 15-20K is.. my entire CAR when I bought it new was 20K.

    As a former Jaguar/Land Rover and Volvo Tech, I can agree with all the little issues that add up to be sooo expensive. I've had several Land Rovers myself, but I am able to repair them cheaply rather than taking to the dealer @ nearly $200+ per hour. As for Volvo, the T5 is turbocharged, the T6 is Turbo and Supercharged, and the T8 is Turbo and Supercharged on the front axle and Electric rear axle (Hybrid). The newer B5,B6 is similar, just being mild Hybrid. I personally own a newer T6 Volvo XC90 with over 100k miles and have only done minor repairs beyond the normal maintenance. With the cost increasing exponentially you have to take into consideration the labor costs, as well as the materials OEM requires, such as quantity of synthetic oil at $9-14 per quart and a filter that's $40-50. So an oil change at the dealer is going to run you $200-250 by itself. Then the up-sales. Brake flush, injector cleaning, etc...Its easy to see how these numbers are that high. Also, as a former resident of Chicago, I drove a Diesel VW that didn't have to get emissions tested. Gas cars only have to get tested/inspected every 2 years.

    • @dddontae
      @dddontae 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@2blkSSs From what I’ve seen and read online the piston ring issue was only on early models from 2015 and the first half of 2016, most were taken care of under warranty and Volvo changed the material of the rings midway through 2016. With that being said since my moms XC90 is 8 years old sitting at 93k miles and doesn’t burn oil I think it’s rings are fine it must’ve been built with the new rings from factory or the previous owner had them replaced under warranty. I also own a 2019 T6 powered S60 sitting at 64k miles which isn’t a lot but I also haven’t had any issues with it 🤷🏾‍♂️

      Tires, brakes, and struts aren't considered "repairs". Yes, I've spent $1200 on my Mustang in 11 years. They are incredibly inexpensive to keep running if you get one with a manual transmission. Currently 130K miles on the original clutch and no issues. Water pump and chain was the $1200, of course. But all cars need that at 80-100K. Radiator will need replacing in a couple of years.. all normal stuff. And the clutch is DIY easy at $600 in parts. Mechanics love working on them as they are in and out in 2-3 hours.

    I wish you had discussed the criteria for determining the cost of maintenance, because clearly the maintenance cost for an individual car will depend on how it is driven and how many miles it has been driven. For instance, my 2013 Jeep Wrangle has been driven 184,000+ miles and has only needed typical maintenance (fluids, tires, brakes, bulbs and recently the heater control) and our 2019 Challenger that has been drive 51,000+ miles just this week required $1,700 in repairs.

  • @thelonelywolf88
    @thelonelywolf88 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I can agree with Porsche being second from the top as most expensive to maintain. Last week, a 19 Cayenne came in needing a battery and rear brakes. Both together would be over $3000. The battery is a dealer-only lithium ion battery which would cost my job $1400 alone, plus there are specialized tools needed to program it to the car. That job alone is $2000

    I wish more people would acknowledge how deliberate these "defects" are in so many luxury brands these days. These future maintenance costs are planned by the manufacturers every step of the way. They need to have fully staffed service departments, and they want you to buy a new car every 2 or 3 years. If they made the cars as bulletproof as Toyotas they would sell less of them. It is a conscious plan to make more money.

    I believe the results of this study are based on conjecture. The “ cost of maintenance“ is not relevant to the reliability of a vehicle. You can have a very reliable vehicle with a high maintenance cost or you can have a very unreliable vehicle that wasn’t maintained. If I spend $10,000 in 10 years doing every scheduled maintenance the dealership suggest to my Toyota and the guy with a BMW, spend no money and put no mileage on his BMW in 10 years, does that mean that the cost of maintenance on my Toyota greater than the cost of maintenance on the BMW and we should conclude that a BMW is a better vehicle?

    Illinois has emissions tests. I just got my winter car (Honda Pilot) tested today. It's every two years. There are no bs car inspections like where my sister lives in Virginia where they will make you get tires if they are too old. I hear Texas has them too. Virginia also has property tax on cars. No inspections, no property tax and helmet laws in Illinois.
    My old winter car kept tripping the EGR system and what I would do to get it through emissions every two years was disconnect the battery and drive the car for about 20 miles. It was enough to give it some history, but not enough to trip the check engine light. I'd run it through emissions and all was good. I did that 3x. I eventually troubleshooted it before I got rid of the car. It was a sensor I picked up for $20 on Amazon. Most of it was my time.
    BTW... April left the "windy" city and moved to a city that is windier.

    would be interesting to see the reliability associated with those costs. I think a few of those brands it’s simply service cost and not necessarily poor reliability. This is also dealer service price costs, which for a comparison it has to be that way for fairness. A good Indy will probably change those costs greatly, as there is definitely some brand “tax” with some of those brands when you go to the dealer. Still interesting to see, nice video guys!

    The Porsche number could be easily achieved even if nothing ever broke. If you do all scheduled services at the dealership in a costlier metro area, it’s a minimum of $2k a year in just maintenance. Some major services like 40k of a Cayman or Boxster are $4,000! If you can do a lot of the routine work like oil changes, engine air filter, spark plugs, and brakes yourself or at least at an independent shop, you can radically reduce that number.

    Let's see, for my 2017 Chevy Bolt EV for past 7 years. $880.
    $844 on tires, the rest on cabin air filters.
    Man, I just realized I should change my brake fluid, but pads are all literally not warn with regen breaking. But I do my own maintenance anyway, so it'll prob be under 20 bucks. For the car enthusiasts out there, the secret nobody wants to tell you is that EV is the best daily beater while you spend time and money on your FUN car.

    All. of these Consumer Reports expense figures are referenced off RepairPal - which is quite misleading since it includes the initial years of ownership in which repairs are covered by warranty (and then extended warranty). Furthermore, the figures do not clearly differentiate between 'maintenance' (oil & filter, belts & pads, tires, alignments, etc.) and actual repair (car is busted & inoperable). A better measurement: start with a 5 year-old car, out of warranty and add up maintenance and repair figures separately - for 5 years. THAT will give you more accurate figures (which, by the way, will be sharply higher).

    About what I think most of us expect especially with the Land Rover turds they make and available with a bmw v8 again. With Porsche most of that has to be tires or an engine out repair on a cayman/911, the Cayenne/Pecans I mean Macan are pretty good besides the air suspension or a sensor.

I had a cheap loaner car when my Benz was in the shop for service and it got me from A to B, I didn't enjoy driving it at all though... A cheaper car would be more sensible, but I don't want that xD

    my family's 2012 RAV4 has only had an O2 sensor go bad and a caliper sieze on us around the 10 year mark. we've had a corolla have a catalytic converter go bad relatively early, around year 6 or 7. that's been it with toyotas.
    I've owned a V60 recharge for 11 months, and already had a check engine light (for an evap system issue). but I spent like 4k CAD up front for the max term extended warranty they'll do (10 years 220k or 240k km), specifically cause my expectations are far lower...
