    For a company that produces the sensors used in many smartphones, in addition to their own revolutionary mirrorless and cinema camera, Sony has never produced a standout phone camera.The Xperia 1 II aims to change that, feeling sometimes more like a camera that can make calls than a phone with a camera.
    The Xperia 1 II is firmly aimed at enthusiasts, enabling granular control for both still and videos. We found it could achieve incredible results, but only with some work. The iPhone 11 or Pixel 4 will deliver better images from a quick snapshot, but with some effort and care, the Xperia 1 II can take remarkable photos.

    This is a great review. It's important to note that no one should be spending $1000 on a phone, just to upload photos on IG. This is what I think most reviewers fail to understand. Kudos to you for making the case as to why being a niche product isn't necessarily a bad thing.

    Proud of you guys for doing the camera review justice and rightly spending a little more time with it to actually use it. I really was dead set on this phone but I'm getting the Sony a7III instead which is a way better investment. It's really a shame that such a great phone won't be more accessible to more people because of the price tag and a lack of carrier support. The Xperia 1 ii still gets my vote for phone of the year easily though.

    • @troy5568
      @troy5568 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, except the A7III isn't as convenient and portable as this phone, and definitely doesn't have the insanely fast camera capturing and autofocusing capabilities of this phone. I'd say reserve the mirrorless for special events, because this phone is basically more than just a handy mini mirrorless camera in your tiny pocket, as it can even be a great mini professional film making camcorder, so it's essentially a two-in-one tool with quality reaching the passing standard even if not as good as the two gadgets.

    • @AlTheEngineer

      As a Sony shooter who travels a lot, I can tell you that I carry my Alpha camera with me almost everywhere, but sometimes it's just NOT ready in the "shooting" position with the lens cap off, the "right lens" on, the right mode on, and so on. I missed so many shots because my camera was not ready throughout my travels through the years. The X1ii will never replace a real mirror-less camera or a DSLR for that matter, but it is the BEST companion for that investment!

    • @sidersproductions941

      @@troy5568 no I'm doing photography more as a hobby focused on going into business eventually. I'll get the iPhone 12 Pro for the convenience part as far as mobile photography. But I'm looking to get serious about my hobby and just see where it goes with time and dedication. And of course the A7III has the same autofocusing capabilities as the Xperia 1 ii. It's a real camera for crying out loud.😁

    • @AlTheEngineer
      @AlTheEngineer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sidersproductions941 the A7 has the same eye auto focus, but it doesn't shoot at 20 frames per second. Only the $4500 A9 can do that. I've been a pro photographer for years and I can tell you that the X1ii is as close as a phone will ever get to a real mirrorleas camera (for now), mine arrived a few days ago and it's absolutely fantastic, I already took it out on a photography trip (we shot the comet Neowise) it did a fantastic job next to my Alpha camera. I'd never use the iPhone for anything serious. Unless you're just an Instagram photographer, but if that's what you do then you probably don't care at all about color accuracy and what not since you'll be ruining all your photos with their filters anyway!

      Like how they taught people to love unnaturally processed images from the Pixels and iPhones instead of teaching people how to properly edit photos by themselves, which is how it really should be anyway.

    It is obvious.
    HDR is not used all the time because the software has no idea what kind of photo you plan to take.
    Photo Pro blocks HDR when you select burst mode 20fps, because image stacking is only for standing subject.
    HDR easily messes with colours. Galaxy , Pixel and Iphone are the ones more distant to real scene, the ones with more HDR applied.

    At 9:02 - 9:06, I felt that. If we can draw an analogy between the cars and the phones, Sony would definitely be on the manual transmission. It requires some bit of skills to pull it off but its fun to drive shifting gears to your liking without the computers calculating what gear ratio you should be at what speed. It's the same here. You can rightfully claim the image you capture to that effect is really yours, not some AI who do it for you.

When it comes to photos looking natural, the Xperia 1 II is better than my Xperia XZ Premium. Even Lewis from the Unbox Therapy channel liked the front camera, he said that the camera background in a Sony phone is finally paying off, and I agree; with the Xperia 1 II, in the background of the front camera, you literally get next to no grain at all.

    I think Sony missed the mark with this one. It seems to be aimed at photographers. But the thing is anybody who cares about those pro features are most likely going to have a proper Mirrorless or DSL are anyway. I shoot with Sony cameras professionally and if I’m going to take the time to dial in settings I’m going to do it on my actually camera instead. What would have been more useful is integrated support between the phone and alpha cameras. Things like being able to use it as an external monitor, quick RAW file transfer or a screen that is Super colour accurate and actually good for editing on Would have been better. I was so excited by this phone but will now be skipping it for the note 20

    • @BatAskal

      You'll need a powerful hardware which is the sensor itself to pull this off. Google is already doing burst shots but its not powerful enough to match Sony's af speed and accuracy.

    • @troy5568
      @troy5568 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Of course, the standard camera app is designed to adjust all parameters automatically and then a minor image enhancing to make it look better, but not too much to make it look too artificial, while Photo Pro app is designed to work like an Alpha camera, which means greater array of control over the images produced, for users to edit later.

      It's the same as Sony's real mirrorless camera. It has auto mode and manual mode as well. In auto mode, sometimes u get great results in one-click, but not reliable for certain scenes like shooting fast objects where you need to control the shutter speed and ISO.

    the camera options on this phone are extraordinary, but it doesn't worth the price. I can get a A6400 for lesser money with more or less same feature set except for the 20 FPS.

    • @AlTheEngineer
      @AlTheEngineer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the A6400 + this phone. It's the best companion for the A6400 actually. I travel a lot, and the A6400 is not always ready to shoot right away, sometimes I need to swap the lens, change the mode, re-configure my parameters, etc. I've missed many shots because I didn't have my camera ready in the shooting position throughout my travels. The X1ii will never replace my A6400, but will be a GREAT companion to it (with a very similar and familiar interface).

    • @silva_br1
      @silva_br1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A6400 does not have very expensive 4K screen, battery is about 1/3 of capacity , it does not record 4K HDR 10bit.
      Also just the Snapdragon 865 costs $160.
      A6400 is just A6000 with newer sensor and better AF.

    • @BatAskal
      @BatAskal 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are getting a phone with 4k display, headphone jack and cameras with sports tech on this one with 16mm, 24 and 70 mm lens under that price. It looks pretty loaded for $1200 compared to others who are into notches, punch holes, wrap around displays, foldables and 100x zoom lens and resolutions defying physics that is really useless and relies too much software processing on images.

    This is one of the largest 12mp sensors around, last I checked the same one as the S20/+ main camera. Not sure if I would call this unimpressive, considering the larger sensors hasn't been performing too well and often loses to an iphone with a standard ol' 12mp.

    • @troy5568
      @troy5568 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's simply because most other large sensors also use very high megapixel count for pixel binning, which is okay, but still no better than traditional single bayer sensors with no issues with color fringing and demosaicing artifacts.
      Besides, I wouldn't call the iPhone's 12MP images anything extraordinary. If anything, it produces similar images to a 2-year old Pixel 2.
      For Sony, they apply their own science in photography to their smartphones and insist on all the fancy HDR highlight and shadow boosting algorithms and keep images as naturally accurate as what the sensors really captured.
      Even RAW files from the iPhones and Pixels aren't purely RAW, as the HDR stacking happens all the time, as if there's no way to turn it off.
      It looks nice at first glance, but a processed image is much harder to edit because all other information were already lost in the post processing, while even Sony's JPEGs are still well-editable because of minimal manipulation to the images. Flexibility is the main strength of this phone, as the user can achieve the same exact look of images as the Pixels and iPhones by a proper manual editing of photos, and sometimes can be even better than those two as well.
      GCAM port is pretty much available on most Android phones nowadays, and Sony phones are no exception, so if you're really into the instant image processing from the Pixels, then you're not missing out anything at all. If anything, you're actually getting more options, because you can get the same results on this phone as on the Pixel and iPhone, but you can't get the same results on this phone on those two, and remembering the all-time quote: *More options is always better.*

      @@troy5568 Yeah, most of those who give negative comments to xperia probably don't understand real photography, maybe they just want a quick, bright and colorful... It's a HDR and color filter. I can also get you a photo like on the iphone by adding a color filter and finishing..
