From a big Sony fan from Japan, I have the same frustration. 3 years ago when I bought the Xperia Touch, a smart projector, my mind was blown away. It was by far the best peice of tech I bought ever in my life, and I still use it heavily to this day. Everything about it was innovative, and it felt like the future. Honestly, it still does in 2020. A UV light touch sensor projector with an android OS, which you can gesture control, up to a 128 inch full HD screen. This was a revolution. However, the product got discontinued. Reason? No one knew about it. No one knew that Sony released the Xperia Touch, no one knew that Sony discontinued the Xperia Touch, and no one knew how much of a masterpiece it was. Why dont people buy Sony products? The answer is simple. It has been simple. Marketing. At this point I’m thinking about just taking over the marketing department and fixing it, just so I can get my self an Xperia Touch II
I don't think marketing is the problem. The problem is Xperia phone just doesn't look that appealing and its specs also not appealing. So not only mainstream users will avoid this phone, but power users too. That leaves only hardcore Sony fans as potential buyers. Which they will also avoid because of long delays, which by the time it arrives, the soc and Android 10 already become outdated
Advertising is one of the factor. For me it is cause back in 2014 or 15 I had Xperia M and it was really awesome and in those days Sony was considered a premium smartphone brand but after that they stopped advertising and most people see what's trending and best seller thing. So they never knew sony is still in business or making phones
I think lots of people just lost the faith in Sony after how bad their phones were. Like me. I don't dare to spend that much money on something that I had a very bad experience with
I love the language design off the Xperia, want to buy one + the mark 4 headphone; but daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn, the price is way too crazy expensive in comparison with everything else available from the competitors
For last 14 years I was buying only Sony smartphones because I love the way their phones are built and works. I was trying Samsung and some other brands but I always end up giving it to my wife or son and coming back to Sony again. I just got Sony Xperia 1 III and it's awesome.
@@michaelnaas3509 for my xperia X, it was about 2.5 years, which was pretty good- this was at a time when not many manufacturers provided security updates on time and neither for more than 2 years (especially Samsung).. the xz2 is currently on Android 10 and might get 11(released in 2018)..XZ1 was their worst phone in terms of software updates, but otherwise it's pretty great actually, you usually get 2 or MAYBE 3 platform updates with a year or half more of security updates.

Sony has talented engineers and scientists, but they also have a culture of pitting different divisions in competition against each other. That's why the software on the PS4 was so awful at launch that's why until very recently Xperia phones took awful pictures despite having the best hardware. And it's also why their marketing teams don't care about anything except movies. Their camera division had to create it's own marketing team.
Completely agreed man. I had 3 smartphones throughout my life : Samsung galaxy ace Sony xperia z Sony xperia xz premium And I have been in love with Sony phones ever since, they are just awesome. But for some reason they stopped shipping it here (Iran) around 4 years ago and the market they had doesn't exist here anymore. God I wish they were still available here.
They stopped selling in Brazil too, and in many countries. In my opinion it's the worst strategy. Well you still can import but, at least here, is very complicated and with lots of fees and risks. The price that was already very high turns almost impossible considering importing, besides the fact that will not have warranty.
in my area (indonesia) we still have many sony fanboy (also me) still waiting sony to make a comeback. the xperia Mark 4 is too expensive because we need to buy from other country and the tax make us to think twice to buy it

@@beegyoshi6525 H.S. Power control is not commonly found (other manufacturer i know is ASUS). 20fps burst is also unique to Sony. 360 Reality Audio can be used on other phones with Sony headphones. Camera lenses are based on the holy trinity of lenses (16-35, 24-70, 70-200). Zeiss Optics has no other manufacturer. Eye AF is unique to Sony, ported over from their Alpha cameras. DSEE Ultimate is unique to Sony as well, but is integrated in some Sony headphones.
Sony's marketing has always baffled me. They have amazing design and engineering teams, but their product naming, announcements and release windows make it too hard for consumers to care in such a competitive market - especially with so many other great products out there already!
They need to look at DJi, Apple and OnePlus for naming. Simple and to the point. (Not including samsung because some of their names are.... Pretty bad)
It's almost like they just have too much on their plate. I mean with how many different products Sony makes, they only make 1/3rd of their profit on consumer electronics. How can one company manage hundreds of high end product launches a year?
In some countries, phone brands like sony, motorola, htc, and lg are just disappeared, people would love to buy them if someone sells them. Chinese brands, like realme and others, offers huge incentives to sellers and distributors, so that is maybe one of the reasons people don't buy sony, because people in some countries just don't have access to buy those smartphone brands.
@@konrad_ljbe I'm not sure. Now I'm choosing phone which is highly preferably below 155mm and not very expensive. There are exacly two: Motorola Edge 30 Neo and Xperia 10 iv. I thing Motorolas (Xiaomi, Samsung) are pretty popular here in Czech Republic. It was Huawei, but they disappeared for obvious reason (embargo). Yes, HTC and LG disappeared long time ago. But I don't know: comparing Sony and Motorola it's hard. One has good old stuff, other has likely better camera, definitely 15% lower price, stereo speakers, more ram, fast charge and I'm happy with ones or older Motorola and much more positive reviews, despite some are saying that both phones are actually overpriced and only reason to buy them is their size and in case of Xperia it's durability and unique features.
@@pavelperina7629 I don't know the moto Edge 30 neo. But I know, that the moto Edge 30 is a great Deal. I had the Xperia 10 III. I changed it less than one year later because of Performance issues. And according to Reviews, they didn't fixed this issue with the 10 IV. Thats why I would recommend the normal moto Edge 30. Kind regards from Germany.
In America, apples subversive marketing basically means if you have an android you are looked at like you have leprosy. Which sucks. Besides the fact I don't like apple's business practices, android has made VERY interesting phones throughout the years.

I've been using my Xperia 5 III for a couple of months and I'm very happy with it! Glad they kept the SD card slot and headphone jack. Still using those features all the time.

Man, ever since I had my first Sony phone, I never wanted anything else. They are prety hard to break and long living. I have my current one for almost 5 years now (I'm obviously not an enthusiast, just a regular user) and the screen never broke, which is impressive, cause I never used any protective screen or case. And the software still works amazingly.
Agreed. Some of the best features on Android phones were made popular or were widely available first on a Sony phone like the side fingerprint reader. If Sony provided better software support, made their phones more widely available, or priced them a bit lower then I think they could be just as a big as Samsung or OnePlus today in the American market. If I recall correctly, my ex had a Sony phone that was the first smart phone shipped with the newest version of Android at the time, but it only got one update to the next version of Android and that happened much later than its competitors. With how great Sony flagships and their mid range devices are, I still think they can break into the American market if they make the correct adjustments.

I was an apple and Samsung user until now. Will switch to Sony once they release Xperia 1 V in may 2023. It is not because such features are appealing only to enthusiasts but with the fact that Sony is not doing any marketing of their phone line ups in USA plus they do not have any contracts with mobile carriers like Samsung and Apple.

And I was also looking at an Asus Zenfone, but settled on an Xperia 5 IV. And that's coming from an LG V60. I fell in love with the small form factor and the intuitive and basic UI.

The price too. When I see Sony phones at 3 or vodaphone, their like £800 for a midrange phone. A compatible Huawei can be had for £200 sent I'm not even joking. I got my p30 lite with 128gb storage. I liked the Z1 for the month I had it before it broke.
Yeah I think thats the bigger reason for their lower sales. I forget they have flagship phones and most do too. Apple and Samsung are great at creating controversial, creative, and aesthetically pleasing ads that turn heads and spread like wildfire. I don't remember seeing a Sony commercial in the last few years.
I've used a Sony phone before, and let me tell you: I always was the only one in the room with a Sony phone, ALWAYS! but, it was sooo good and reliable and great. Bought it in 2014 and every now and then I still check it out, and it still works to this day! Xperia compact! I quickly clicked this video thinking it was the 5 ii, because I've been eyeing the thing for the past 10 days, and I think it's my next phone.... until I saw the availability..... Sony needs a big change, and soon!
Before smartphones were big, I bought almost exclusively the Sony Walkman phones because they had extremely good music and the internal space to hold MP3s. I've never owned a Sony smartphone and just didn't realize they made them.
Same here... I used 4 xperia models... 1. W810i 2. Xperia Arc S. 3. Xperia SP. 4. Xperia XZ. But my last 2 experience was not so good. There are some problems with Sony Phones. 1. High Price. 2. Poor marketing. 3. Bad after sale Services. 4. Poor software development. 5. And many more.......
As always, amazing clarity on a fundemental subject- ie brand awareness. I hope that Sony gives you feedback on impact on sales (and hand you a big bonus). BUT if you are going to sell a $1000 phone, you had better make sure that the sales pipe is stacked full or else you are wasting everyone's time and money, and the brand manager needs a different job...
Wonder if Sony just fixed their marketing. Marques got the device and that has been almost an impossibly mission for Sony for many years now. And here this clip is, a video quite positive on the device itself not for the company. But even bad advertising is good for Sony. I was using sony and constantly upgrading up until z5 premium. The issue was never the price. Late and faulty software update, and when you try to troubleshoot. They have worst technical support and do umentation ever.. relying solely on forum enthusiast. They are clearly not well managed for a mobile company and only surviving because their big name. It was an experience so painful I won't even bother type the full story. Never have I ever hate a brand before, not using a single product from them ever again.
4K QLED 144hz refresh rate screens will be the flagship feature of 2022 cause they’re running out of stuff to sell us on. 5g isn’t enough to sway most people.
What I like about these Xperias are that they record 4K Video.....for 250 bucks.....for over 5 years now. All these chinesium phones can't do 4K.....like none.
@@AmstradExin Most people couldn't tell the difference between 4k and 1080p unless they were up close to the TV and having them side by side. I remember when I worked at Target and we had a display for the Sony Blu-ray player that had just come out and people would "oooh" and "aaaah" over it. Little did they know, the blu-ray player was an empty shell with a DVD player in the cabinet showing the video. It just looked good because the screen was the best Samsung 43" they had out at the time.
Mid range phones have bad cameras and excessive telemetry. Xperia 10 II has atleast 5 second shutter before it takes a single photo. Quality of that photo is average at best.
@@AmstradExin most people don't care about 4k, some don't even have 4k pc monitors nor TVs. 4k will just consume more space in my phone storage if it has a 4k feature. My phone can record 1080p but i still choose the 720p option i won't even bother using 4k.
You're right. I've had the 1 Mark II for a few months now, and even then it took a full month for it to even get to my door. But, I absolutely love it. I like the 4k screen (even if you can't tell at that small a size) and I don't care about the 60hz refresh rate despite most new phones having higher refresh rate screens. The phone has been great and can handle absolutely anything I've pushed it to do. The cameras are great, and while I do wish there was a night mode, its just as easy (for me anyway) to take the photo in the pro app and edit it later in lightroom to get a good photo. The Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers sound amazing(something you didn't mention) and the ability to fully appreciate higher-res audio is something I needed. Which is how I found out about the phone in the first place. The biggest problem for Sony is that nobody knows they still make phones. Hell, the guy at the Metro when I went to activate the phone didn't even know Sony made phones at all. People look at my phone and they're weirded out by its taller aspect ratio, but I love it. Sure the black bars on youtube videos are annoying at first, but you get used to them. The only real downside to the phone is its price. You absolutely get what you [ay for though because the phone is full of great specs and features. I got their Wireless earbuds bundled in, which sound the best of any I've listened to, so that was a big seller on the phone for me too.

A brilliant analysis and extremely well presented. I had a Sony Xperia smartphone in 2014, but over just 4 years the processor started running slow, battery got hot and wouldn't hold charge for very long. I enjoyed using it for photos and Xperia movie making app. The waterproof construction and shutter button were great features back then. The main phone and tech stores where I live in Madrid, Spain, do not stock Sony phones anymore. They are full of the usual brands and more recent ones, nut no Sony. I asked about it, they say you can only order online.
I'm so rooting for Sony's mobile division, too. I can't imagine a life without a Sony phone because I've been with them since the days of Sony Ericsson. From Z200 to P990, P1i, Xperia Z2, Z5 Premium, and Xperia 1 (I).
The Compact series is what brought me into sony smartphones. The Xperia 5 (I&II) should in fact be the compact edition of the 1, but most mainstream media consider it as a "successor"

I've always wondered about this too. My dad uses a sony phone and led me into using them too. I currently use an old flagship Sony Xperia 5 and is a bit outdated to the newest ones but is still an awesome phone to use and is good enough for me. Its so slim, compact and is perfect for everything really.
I’m so happy that Marques brought recognition to this phone, because, even though I don’t think the phone is for me, there’s so many cool things about it that I could see it becoming a major competitor. There are things that actually make it stand out and be unique. It’s a beautiful piece of hardware. If they just were better at advertising and release hype, and maybe adding something more appealing to an average person, then it would be a real name in the smart phone world.
If only sony gets their shit things together and restarts naming of phone from scratch. The naming of their phones are confusing, like xperia 10 is weaker than xperia 5.... and the timing of releases between names like wtf xperia 1 successor is xperia 5? They should scratch the brand "XPERIA" and starts from scratch like sony x20 "2020" then successor will be "sony x21"

I have a Xperia E5 (2015) which is being used by my daughter actually to watch TH-cam and play games. It literally flies and the battery lasts like crazy(never changed it) and never fails to load everything you throw in it. I mean, Experia phones are lit!
Yes. They dont even promote the phone on their webaite. If you go to the website the phone is basically hidden under a bunch of other ads and products. Is likebthey dont even wanna sell the phone. Im a huge sony fan and i love xperia phones but they are just horrible at marketing, almost as bad as HTC marketing.

I have been using Sony Xperia XZ1 for about 5 years now without much problems, in fact it's an amazing phone. But I live in Chennai,India with a population of 85 lakh people and with only 1 Sony Authorised service centre.
Sony used to be the Apple of the 80s and 90s. Since then quality has gone down in most of their consumer electronics while price has stayed the same. Sony simply hasn't kept up with the competition.
They don't really make phones for us. They make these phones to showcase their internal modules to larger suppliers. Consumers are an afterthought with these.

I just googled "Sony smartphone" and the first result was the Sony XPeria pro 5G for $1,998. I think part of it is that if people are already part of the big four ecosystems it is a hassle to transfer to a new brand, and your trade in is not as good. Then Sony's "budget" line costs just as much as the flagship line for OnePlus or Pixel, and their top of the line costs twice as much as Apple or Samsung's flagship lines. People think it is a lot less hassle and cost to stick with the one they are on. Also, as you said, Sony is so focused on TVs, Playstations, exceptional audio equipment and phones are kind of on the backburner as far as upper level management and their PR team is concerned.
There was a time when Sony Ericsson phones were selling like hot cakes here in India. They were an object of desire - beautiful design, cool features, great with music, the best cameras etc. But the dumb management at Sony killed the brand here. I'm sure if they create a phone for the masses, it will destroy OnePlus Nord and the rest of the competition. Sony has immense respect and brand recognition here in India. I hope they wake up.
@@johnp2631 umm... naah it might be a problem with you or in your country but i had Xperia z ultra that phone broke it's screen twice once in warranty and other after, they asked 12k for a screen replacement which for the phone that BIG and pricey was understandable
@@johnp2631 They had replaced my Sony Xperia XR - 3 times in a year just for the Aux and Charging Cover flaps going off. I don't think during that time they had any issues here with warranty (at-least in India during the time of that phone being launched).

Right! No marketing plan. Beta Max was much better than VHS and came in a smaller cassette, but Panasonic won the battle because they licensed VHS to all manufacturers while you could only get Beta Max technology by buying Sony video players. Sony never was top dog in electronics sales again.BTW, I have SONY Audiophile equipment, SONY wireless phones, but don't know a US retailer selling SONY smartphones and few that offer their TV's.
Nah just that Sony products warranty sucks just like their customer support which are filled with "DON'T GIVE A SHIT ASSHOLES". Plus most of their products are overpriced like usual. In terms of quality most of their products(except for Vaio their failed pc platform) are premium good.
Ive been using Sony phones for over 10 years and I really don't understand why people neglects em , they are pretty much the pioners of many nowdays inventions for phones and they bring quality for a reasonable price.
Yep, it's all about marketing. No reason the company behind the PlayStation shouldn't be selling more phones. This year in particular they've improved a lot over prior years and hopefully the 2020 sales will outperform last year's all time low.
Actually its available in Hungary (EU) months ago, its even on sale right now, but still an iPhone 11 Pro is 300$ cheaper and even the Galaxy S20 ultra is 200$ cheaper than this.. thats why nobody cares. Oh and no free headphones here with it. 🙄
Exactly, Apple is the dominant category leader in North America. Samsung has perfectly positioned themselves as the "alternative" brand - the product you buy if you do NOT like the iPhone. They did this by mocking the iPhone and its customers in their ads, not in an effort to win those customers over but rather to unite anti-Apple sentiment. Much like Apple themselves did with Microsoft using the "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" campaign. So now, if you dislike Apple you buy Samsung even if there are other great Android options as well. Samsung is the Pepsi to Apple's Coke. Sony is Dr. Pepper, at best.
Sony last year took a different approach selling phones, they don't sell it internationally as much but only to certain countries like Japan and UK only.
Yeah and when sony see`s this video they gonna put more time in launching and promoting this phone more quicker even though I heard it sells better in the U.K. than iphones they need to have a meeting with their marketing team for sure
If they do have ads then either the price of the device will increase or the product itself have to cut costs. Look at Samsung, they're literally removing and downgrading their phone every generation, some minor like headphone jack, SD card slot and some major like screen resolution from 1440p to 1080p, removing 3D ToF, reducing battery capacity and reducing sensor size + resolution.
Very true. And while that's often a very good thing for delivering stellar products, it's not so good if they're competing with a bunch of very loud competitors who make good products in their own right.

I love sony phones and im always a fan of that brand. That all started when they released Xperia mini and that was 2012 if im not wrong. That tiny smart phone was so brilliant with its hd camera and the sound is so loud when using headsets. my friends and my workmates started to buy sony after seeing that tiny smart phone of mine. And the fact that, my xperia mini is still alive until now.😅 it is now 10years old. there is that down side of it and thats the battery 😅 no hardware issues until now except for removal battery. Btw great video. With that phone you are having a pro camera and at the same time a phone. I just wish to have that kind of phone again😭😭😭😭
They have stopped shipping to India bcz they're increasing the Xperia models prices day by day & people were complainting that to them always in their social media pages & everywhere else.Xperia new models really have the capability to beat every chinese smartphone company alone but they've to keep the prices aggressive.

That's the same issue I came across. You just can't find it with a carrier, and I don't necessarily want to go through something like eBay or some other vendor. I would prefer to get it from the company itself or a carrier. Canada has very little to offer in terms of variety/options.
For myself i have the xperia 1ii as well, why i bought it? Headphone jack, bit also the camera! More natural, less b.s saturated and hardly any shadows for some damn reason. In normal to good lighting pics just look far nicer to me! Far less computational stuff going on! But in turn.. quick pics in less optiomal lighting just isn't as good as it could be. If it comes down to my experience, it is the software isn't the smoothest, the display is too dim... 500 nits isn't enough. But why not being sold... well Sony does this thing... reveal a phone, then not sell it for months so people forget about it...

Great review! I only go with Sony for my phones...but you're 100% correct. Their launching is dismal, and just try to FIND them! You won't see them at ANY of the carriers -- some whose staff will actually look at you oddly and say "I didn't know Sony even MADE smartphones." And you NEVER physically SEE them at ANY of the big box stores to check them out. Sure you can "order" them, but I'm of the old-school and need to SEE a product I may be spending $1,500 to $2k on BEFORE taking the plunge and a very real high "restocking" fee should I find it won't suit MY needs. Specs are great, as are other peoples' VIRTUAL opinions...but I have my own very REAL ones to fulfill and live with on a daily basis. Sony makes superior products, and if more people were aware of their smartphones -- could actually SEE their smartphones -- the story would be quite different! In fact I'm in the market now for my next one (no Samsung or iPhone for me)! My only problem is...getting to PHYSICALLY see it first! P.S. I've never seen a dumber marketing strategy for some of the best smartphones out there!
I can't believe a company with the best selling consoles in the world, have some of the best TVs in the world, probably the best camera in the world, some of the best headphones / headsets in the world... Is SO SHIT at advertising their phone.
Tbh only Sony gaming department, movies & media and maybe cameras have a solid and we'll done advertising all the other departments of Sony are always niche products you either gotta see it by yourself in a store or search for it yourself otherwise you will never know IF a new product exists and since they are a Japanese company whose anything they do is a hit in Japan it's almost like they don't really care into showing the world they have actually great products and it's a shame specially as they are a huge in camera lenses and other components and they could have used their flagships products to show off their components abilities like Samsung does with it's screens on S series

It's April 2023, I am watching this on my 2nd hand Sony Experia 5 Mark II, bought 2 days ago for a very economical price. I can tell you one thing, it's beautiful and elegant device. Worth every penny! Loved it!

My favorite phone i’ve ever owned was the Xperia Z1 Compact. The phone was small, had an unbelievably smooth android experience, had extraordinary battery life (until a major android update killed the battery life) the cameras were decent it had the biggest notification light ever and the phone was water resistant with flaps before any major phone was. I wish sony kept that size and made phones like that still (even if midrange) I would pay $600 for an “Xperia Za Compact” style phone right now no problem 👍🏼

They treated it like that before. Probably one of the reasons their mobile division ran into such problems. If anything the reason the new Xperias are so good is precisely because finally with the Alpha camera division being so heavily involved for the first time it finally feels like SONY actually is taking making smartphones seriously.
With the rise of gaming phones, I think Sony should make a gaming phone and name it the Playstation Phone, and add unique exclusive games to it, and have its own Playstation operating system as well as unique side buttons and 144hz screen. Idk, maybe im stupid.

I've been Sony phone fan since my first Sony Ericsson t230, but they lost me on xperia m4 aqua. At first I liked it, but after android update it suddenly got no storage left and Sony won'y let me move all their bloatware to sd card (let alone letting me delete or do not install it in the first place). Spamming me with useless notifications from that bloatware was finishing blow. I switched to mid range Samsungs and had no regrets since.

From a big Sony fan from Japan, I have the same frustration.
3 years ago when I bought the Xperia Touch, a smart projector, my mind was blown away. It was by far the best peice of tech I bought ever in my life, and I still use it heavily to this day. Everything about it was innovative, and it felt like the future. Honestly, it still does in 2020.
A UV light touch sensor projector with an android OS, which you can gesture control, up to a 128 inch full HD screen.
This was a revolution.
However, the product got discontinued. Reason? No one knew about it. No one knew that Sony released the Xperia Touch, no one knew that Sony discontinued the Xperia Touch, and no one knew how much of a masterpiece it was.
Why dont people buy Sony products?
The answer is simple. It has been simple. Marketing.
At this point I’m thinking about just taking over the marketing department and fixing it, just so I can get my self an Xperia Touch II
I don't think marketing is the problem. The problem is Xperia phone just doesn't look that appealing and its specs also not appealing. So not only mainstream users will avoid this phone, but power users too. That leaves only hardcore Sony fans as potential buyers. Which they will also avoid because of long delays, which by the time it arrives, the soc and Android 10 already become outdated
Advertising is one of the factor. For me it is cause back in 2014 or 15 I had Xperia M and it was really awesome and in those days Sony was considered a premium smartphone brand but after that they stopped advertising and most people see what's trending and best seller thing. So they never knew sony is still in business or making phones
I think lots of people just lost the faith in Sony after how bad their phones were. Like me. I don't dare to spend that much money on something that I had a very bad experience with

For last 14 years I was buying only Sony smartphones because I love the way their phones are built and works. I was trying Samsung and some other brands but I always end up giving it to my wife or son and coming back to Sony again. I just got Sony Xperia 1 III and it's awesome.

@@michaelnaas3509 for my xperia X, it was about 2.5 years, which was pretty good- this was at a time when not many manufacturers provided security updates on time and neither for more than 2 years (especially Samsung).. the xz2 is currently on Android 10 and might get 11(released in 2018)..XZ1 was their worst phone in terms of software updates, but otherwise it's pretty great actually, you usually get 2 or MAYBE 3 platform updates with a year or half more of security updates.

I agree and honestly Sony's PR and production team has always seemed to been lackluster
Sony has talented engineers and scientists, but they also have a culture of pitting different divisions in competition against each other. That's why the software on the PS4 was so awful at launch that's why until very recently Xperia phones took awful pictures despite having the best hardware. And it's also why their marketing teams don't care about anything except movies. Their camera division had to create it's own marketing team.

Well you still can import but, at least here, is very complicated and with lots of fees and risks. The price that was already very high turns almost impossible considering importing, besides the fact that will not have warranty.

Sony's marketing has always baffled me. They have amazing design and engineering teams, but their product naming, announcements and release windows make it too hard for consumers to care in such a competitive market - especially with so many other great products out there already!

It's almost like they just have too much on their plate. I mean with how many different products Sony makes, they only make 1/3rd of their profit on consumer electronics. How can one company manage hundreds of high end product launches a year?
In some countries, phone brands like sony, motorola, htc, and lg are just disappeared, people would love to buy them if someone sells them. Chinese brands, like realme and others, offers huge incentives to sellers and distributors, so that is maybe one of the reasons people don't buy sony, because people in some countries just don't have access to buy those smartphone brands.
A few years ago it was Sony's strategy to exit some of the not profitable markets (like India) and concentrate on the profitable ones (like Europe).
@@konrad_ljbe I'm not sure. Now I'm choosing phone which is highly preferably below 155mm and not very expensive. There are exacly two: Motorola Edge 30 Neo and Xperia 10 iv. I thing Motorolas (Xiaomi, Samsung) are pretty popular here in Czech Republic. It was Huawei, but they disappeared for obvious reason (embargo). Yes, HTC and LG disappeared long time ago. But I don't know: comparing Sony and Motorola it's hard. One has good old stuff, other has likely better camera, definitely 15% lower price, stereo speakers, more ram, fast charge and I'm happy with ones or older Motorola and much more positive reviews, despite some are saying that both phones are actually overpriced and only reason to buy them is their size and in case of Xperia it's durability and unique features.

I had the Xperia 10 III. I changed it less than one year later because of Performance issues. And according to Reviews, they didn't fixed this issue with the 10 IV. Thats why I would recommend the normal moto Edge 30.

Man, ever since I had my first Sony phone, I never wanted anything else. They are prety hard to break and long living. I have my current one for almost 5 years now (I'm obviously not an enthusiast, just a regular user) and the screen never broke, which is impressive, cause I never used any protective screen or case. And the software still works amazingly.

Agreed. Some of the best features on Android phones were made popular or were widely available first on a Sony phone like the side fingerprint reader. If Sony provided better software support, made their phones more widely available, or priced them a bit lower then I think they could be just as a big as Samsung or OnePlus today in the American market. If I recall correctly, my ex had a Sony phone that was the first smart phone shipped with the newest version of Android at the time, but it only got one update to the next version of Android and that happened much later than its competitors. With how great Sony flagships and their mid range devices are, I still think they can break into the American market if they make the correct adjustments.

I was an apple and Samsung user until now. Will switch to Sony once they release Xperia 1 V in may 2023. It is not because such features are appealing only to enthusiasts but with the fact that Sony is not doing any marketing of their phone line ups in USA plus they do not have any contracts with mobile carriers like Samsung and Apple.
So, no region lock? Buy in Japan for instance and use anywhere?
You're right - no contracts with carriers - why didn't this dude point that out? I wanted anything but popular, over-hyped offerings. And I was also looking at an Asus Zenfone, but settled on an Xperia 5 IV. And that's coming from an LG V60. I fell in love with the small form factor and the intuitive and basic UI.

but, it was sooo good and reliable and great. Bought it in 2014 and every now and then I still check it out, and it still works to this day! Xperia compact!

Before smartphones were big, I bought almost exclusively the Sony Walkman phones because they had extremely good music and the internal space to hold MP3s. I've never owned a Sony smartphone and just didn't realize they made them.

I was using sony and constantly upgrading up until z5 premium.
The issue was never the price.
Late and faulty software update, and when you try to troubleshoot. They have worst technical support and do umentation ever.. relying solely on forum enthusiast.

It was an experience so painful I won't even bother type the full story.

What I like about these Xperias are that they record 4K Video.....for 250 bucks.....for over 5 years now. All these chinesium phones can't do 4K.....like none.

I remember when I worked at Target and we had a display for the Sony Blu-ray player that had just come out and people would "oooh" and "aaaah" over it. Mid range phones have bad cameras and excessive telemetry. Xperia 10 II has atleast 5 second shutter before it takes a single photo. Quality of that photo is average at best.

@@AmstradExin most people don't care about 4k, some don't even have 4k pc monitors nor TVs. 4k will just consume more space in my phone storage if it has a 4k feature. My phone can record 1080p but i still choose the 720p option i won't even bother using 4k.
You're right. I've had the 1 Mark II for a few months now, and even then it took a full month for it to even get to my door. But, I absolutely love it. I like the 4k screen (even if you can't tell at that small a size) and I don't care about the 60hz refresh rate despite most new phones having higher refresh rate screens. The phone has been great and can handle absolutely anything I've pushed it to do. The cameras are great, and while I do wish there was a night mode, its just as easy (for me anyway) to take the photo in the pro app and edit it later in lightroom to get a good photo. The Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers sound amazing(something you didn't mention) and the ability to fully appreciate higher-res audio is something I needed. Which is how I found out about the phone in the first place.
The biggest problem for Sony is that nobody knows they still make phones. Hell, the guy at the Metro when I went to activate the phone didn't even know Sony made phones at all. People look at my phone and they're weirded out by its taller aspect ratio, but I love it. Sure the black bars on youtube videos are annoying at first, but you get used to them. The only real downside to the phone is its price. You absolutely get what you [ay for though because the phone is full of great specs and features. I got their Wireless earbuds bundled in, which sound the best of any I've listened to, so that was a big seller on the phone for me too.

Its the truth thats why Sony leave Asian market and only focus on wealthy countries like Europe, U.S, etc.

A brilliant analysis and extremely well presented.
I had a Sony Xperia smartphone in 2014, but over just 4 years the processor started running slow, battery got hot and wouldn't hold charge for very long. I enjoyed using it for photos and Xperia movie making app. The waterproof construction and shutter button were great features back then.
The main phone and tech stores where I live in Madrid, Spain, do not stock Sony phones anymore. They are full of the usual brands and more recent ones, nut no Sony. I asked about it, they say you can only order online.
I'm so rooting for Sony's mobile division, too. I can't imagine a life without a Sony phone because I've been with them since the days of Sony Ericsson. From Z200 to P990, P1i, Xperia Z2, Z5 Premium, and Xperia 1 (I).

I love the 5 series, too, but for someone like me with big hands, playing games on a "compact screen" might pose as a challenge. I'd rather spend a few more bucks for the 1 series. Anyway, there's clearly a Sony phone for everyone. Even if someone's tight on budget, there's the 10 series, too.

I've always wondered about this too. My dad uses a sony phone and led me into using them too. I currently use an old flagship Sony Xperia 5 and is a bit outdated to the newest ones but is still an awesome phone to use and is good enough for me. Its so slim, compact and is perfect for everything really.

I’m so happy that Marques brought recognition to this phone, because, even though I don’t think the phone is for me, there’s so many cool things about it that I could see it becoming a major competitor. There are things that actually make it stand out and be unique. It’s a beautiful piece of hardware. If they just were better at advertising and release hype, and maybe adding something more appealing to an average person, then it would be a real name in the smart phone world.

I have a Xperia E5 (2015) which is being used by my daughter actually to watch TH-cam and play games. It literally flies and the battery lasts like crazy(never changed it) and never fails to load everything you throw in it. I mean, Experia phones are lit!

Yes. They dont even promote the phone on their webaite. If you go to the website the phone is basically hidden under a bunch of other ads and products. Is likebthey dont even wanna sell the phone. Im a huge sony fan and i love xperia phones but they are just horrible at marketing, almost as bad as HTC marketing.

I have been using Sony Xperia XZ1 for about 5 years now without much problems, in fact it's an amazing phone. But I live in Chennai,India with a population of 85 lakh people and with only 1 Sony Authorised service centre.

I just googled "Sony smartphone" and the first result was the Sony XPeria pro 5G for $1,998. I think part of it is that if people are already part of the big four ecosystems it is a hassle to transfer to a new brand, and your trade in is not as good. Then Sony's "budget" line costs just as much as the flagship line for OnePlus or Pixel, and their top of the line costs twice as much as Apple or Samsung's flagship lines. People think it is a lot less hassle and cost to stick with the one they are on. Also, as you said, Sony is so focused on TVs, Playstations, exceptional audio equipment and phones are kind of on the backburner as far as upper level management and their PR team is concerned.
There was a time when Sony Ericsson phones were selling like hot cakes here in India. They were an object of desire - beautiful design, cool features, great with music, the best cameras etc. But the dumb management at Sony killed the brand here. I'm sure if they create a phone for the masses, it will destroy OnePlus Nord and the rest of the competition. Sony has immense respect and brand recognition here in India.

that phone broke it's screen twice once in warranty and other after, they asked 12k for a screen replacement which for the phone that BIG and pricey was understandable

Beta Max was much better than VHS and came in a smaller cassette, but Panasonic won the battle because they licensed VHS to all manufacturers while you could only get Beta Max technology by buying Sony video players. Exactly, Apple is the dominant category leader in North America. Samsung has perfectly positioned themselves as the "alternative" brand - the product you buy if you do NOT like the iPhone.
They did this by mocking the iPhone and its customers in their ads, not in an effort to win those customers over but rather to unite anti-Apple sentiment. Much like Apple themselves did with Microsoft using the "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" campaign. So now, if you dislike Apple you buy Samsung even if there are other great Android options as well. Samsung is the Pepsi to Apple's Coke. Sony is Dr. Pepper, at best.

If they do have ads then either the price of the device will increase or the product itself have to cut costs. Look at Samsung, they're literally removing and downgrading their phone every generation, some minor like headphone jack, SD card slot and some major like screen resolution from 1440p to 1080p, removing 3D ToF, reducing battery capacity and reducing sensor size + resolution.

I love sony phones and im always a fan of that brand. That all started when they released Xperia mini and that was 2012 if im not wrong. That tiny smart phone was so brilliant with its hd camera and the sound is so loud when using headsets. my friends and my workmates started to buy sony after seeing that tiny smart phone of mine. And the fact that, my xperia mini is still alive until now.😅 it is now 10years old. there is that down side of it and thats the battery 😅 no hardware issues until now except for removal battery. Btw great video. With that phone you are having a pro camera and at the same time a phone. I just wish to have that kind of phone again😭😭😭😭

That's the same issue I came across. You just can't find it with a carrier, and I don't necessarily want to go through something like eBay or some other vendor. I would prefer to get it from the company itself or a carrier. Canada has very little to offer in terms of variety/options.

For myself i have the xperia 1ii as well, why i bought it? Headphone jack, bit also the camera! More natural, less b.s saturated and hardly any shadows for some damn reason. In normal to good lighting pics just look far nicer to me! Far less computational stuff going on! But in turn.. quick pics in less optiomal lighting just isn't as good as it could be.
If it comes down to my experience, it is the software isn't the smoothest, the display is too dim... 500 nits isn't enough.
But why not being sold... well Sony does this thing... reveal a phone, then not sell it for months so people forget about it...

Great review! I only go with Sony for my phones...but you're 100% correct. Their launching is dismal, and just try to FIND them! You won't see them at ANY of the carriers -- some whose staff will actually look at you oddly and say "I didn't know Sony even MADE smartphones." And you NEVER physically SEE them at ANY of the big box stores to check them out. Sure you can "order" them, but I'm of the old-school and need to SEE a product I may be spending $1,500 to $2k on BEFORE taking the plunge and a very real high "restocking" fee should I find it won't suit MY needs. Specs are great, as are other peoples' VIRTUAL opinions...but I have my own very REAL ones to fulfill and live with on a daily basis. Sony makes superior products, and if more people were aware of their smartphones -- could actually SEE their smartphones -- the story would be quite different! In fact I'm in the market now for my next one (no Samsung or iPhone for me)! My only problem is...getting to PHYSICALLY see it first! P.S. I've never seen a dumber marketing strategy for some of the best smartphones out there!

Tbh only Sony gaming department, movies & media and maybe cameras have a solid and we'll done advertising all the other departments of Sony are always niche products you either gotta see it by yourself in a store or search for it yourself otherwise you will never know IF a new product exists and since they are a Japanese company whose anything they do is a hit in Japan it's almost like they don't really care into showing the world they have actually great products and it's a shame specially as they are a huge in camera lenses and other components and they could have used their flagships products to show off their components abilities like Samsung does with it's screens on S series

Maybe the problem with Sony Smartphone is marketing and after sales service that not take it seriously like other brand.

I remember owning the Xperia Z2 and Xperia P before, the Z2 was insane at its time and the Xperia P had one of the best designs ever
My favorite phone i’ve ever owned was the Xperia Z1 Compact. The phone was small, had an unbelievably smooth android experience, had extraordinary battery life (until a major android update killed the battery life) the cameras were decent it had the biggest notification light ever and the phone was water resistant with flaps before any major phone was. I wish sony kept that size and made phones like that still (even if midrange)
I would pay $600 for an “Xperia Za Compact” style phone right now no problem 👍🏼

Xperia xz2 compact owner here. The android 10 update was a total disaster! Not only in terms of battery life, they screwed pretty much everything

That's actually true.
They treated it like that before. Probably one of the reasons their mobile division ran into such problems. If anything the reason the new Xperias are so good is precisely because finally with the Alpha camera division being so heavily involved for the first time it finally feels like SONY actually is taking making smartphones seriously.

With the rise of gaming phones, I think Sony should make a gaming phone and name it the Playstation Phone, and add unique exclusive games to it, and have its own Playstation operating system as well as unique side buttons and 144hz screen. Idk, maybe im stupid.
@@John-X They DID make a Dedicated gaming phone, about 10 yrs ago I think it even had a PlayStation aesthetic to it.
@@PRhymeExample Yeah but dude, you know the tech wasn't there back then. Even the PS Vita was like a primitive smartphone back then. If they really made a dedicated smartphone with like a tie-in to PS5 (maybe even a black/white/blue design too) I think mobile gaming could really make a comeback.

I've been Sony phone fan since my first Sony Ericsson t230, but they lost me on xperia m4 aqua. At first I liked it, but after android update it suddenly got no storage left and Sony won'y let me move all their bloatware to sd card (let alone letting me delete or do not install it in the first place). Spamming me with useless notifications from that bloatware was finishing blow. I switched to mid range Samsungs and had no regrets since.
This feels like Marques is reprimanding Sony and I love it.
