This is so classic and cool. You've got this trio of people just sitting around talking like there in a coffee shop. Actually Cavett is so good that you've really got 4 people just sitting around and talking. Dick Cavett is one of the few talk show hosts that could create this casual atmosphere and he just melds into it.

I don't really like any celebrity, because once you are on television you are apart of a club. Interviews like this try to make regular people worship them. I think the celebrity is the one of the worst things that happened to society. I do like the celebs that don't do interviews or even want to be seen. I can't remember who was that said the he didn't want to be treated differently from any body else. He would rather you interview the common man because the citizen are the real stars and celebrities are just hours slaves that are treated better with more privleges.

Funny to watch some very major stars of the day having a conversation, with a competent moderator interested in the discussion more than pushing their brand. And it's amazing how damn charismatic Janis Joplin was.
I have been a fan of Janis's since 1968 and saw her in Concert in Jan. '70, she unfortunately died just 3 short months after this Cavett Show. We will never know how much further he great talent would have taken her.
Ann Wilson of Heart reminds me a lot of Janis; not just in the voice, but also in the way she talks and her lack of fakeness in her opinions. I can only imagine how great it would have been for those two to be on the same stage at some point. Definitely sad Janis left us so early.

I’m only 18 and a great fan of Janis Joplin, I love these kinds of stories, you know, from people that have actually witnessed these legends who have died so young. It makes them real again, instead of just someone who is just in the past. They live on.
Janis was hideous with a great voice and great song interpretation but absolutely nothing to offer intellectually while Rocky was beautiful with perhaps a bit more education and something to offer in the way of intellectual discourse. Sometimes that´s just the way it goes.
George Penwell Janis wasn't hideous. She was natural, no cosmetics and go look for her nude pictures, she had a petite, good figure. The ones with all the bead necklaces.
I'm a Canadian and we didn't get cable at our house until 74(It was available back in 69,but we were latecomers at our house.lol) and didn't get to see these earlier Cavett shows. We did get to see him on PBS and I did see him interview Frank Zappa in 82. Great show. He NEVER seems to interrupt.
I thought they were both saying both basically saying the same thing. Raquel seemed to feel the media the media dwelled too much on Dennis Hopper's personal life.
Wow this is quite an amazing discussion. You never see this now a days in talk shows. With this deep thought provoking conversation. Raquel is a lot brighter than I would of first thought. And all three of his guests are fascinating people.
According to Janis's sister, Joplin was a reader and a painter. In third grade her teacher told her mother she had drawing talent. This art talent developed throughout school years. Janis was seen by her school as an artist and it was that art community who were essentially "beatniks." And of course from Beatniks came the hippie movement. But the process for Janis started earlier than most people think. Her parents were not religious. They encouraged all of their children to express themselves. Her father was an intellectual. She would have long conversations with him. She was extremely intelligent and not just the image that she personified on stage. And this video proves that. Yes Janis had problems with being rejected in school but that did not floor her or destroy her. She simply moved to place where she could do her thing. In the end, she became too casual with heroin because she had dried out in 69 and proved to herself that she could kick it. But that confidence led to future recreational with the attitude that she could handle it. She got a hold of pure heroin which had not been checked out by her dealer's chemist friend in advance and it killed her and 9 other people in the LA area in Oct of 70. This was not a desperate act as a lot of people want to make of it. She shot up the normal dose of heroin that she had always taken, put everything back in her dresser, went downstairs to buy a pack of cigarettes. She came back upstairs, started to undress when she died instantly while standing up. She never knew what hit her. In fact when she collapsed, she hit face first into her night stand and broke her nose. She was discovered by her manager John Cooke 10+ hours later after she had not shown up for her last recording session.
What an unorthodox group of creative people sharing the same stage & talking. This was a great talk show era. Each could contribute & they were all from different career paths.

And there's something... less rehearsed about the way they interact than I feel would happen on a modern talk show. I feel like if three interesting people from different walks of life were allowed to come together like this today, they would make more of an effort to keep the conversation light.

All 3 of them-Doug, Janis, and Raquel, are able to carry on an intelligent conversation with Dick Cavett without any kind of volatility, hypersensitivity, or antagonism. Prime example why I love old school with intellectual people having a pleasant, social discussion with Dick Cavett not showing any ill-feeling or resentment. Their personal lifestyles have nothing to do with the discussion here. All 3 seem rational, and I wouldn't make any silly comparisons like Janis vs. Raquel, or Doug, Janis, and Raquel all sitting in a room together. So what? Very cool and love the diversity. I watch so much Cavett on TH-cam that my nervous system has convinced me that it’s all happening right now. It’s great. I’d much rather be watching 60s and 70s legends than modern nonentities.
It is amusing to watch Douglas Fairbanks try to play referee between Janis Joplin and Raquel Welch ! These two incredible strong, passionate and beautiful women. I liked the exchange between Janis and Raquel; everybody only saw Janis as as the best rock star that ever lived and Raquel as a body they were two strong, beautiful women with a point of view.
0havent seen Fairbanks in years. Today young children dont know who he was. Their should be a series about al, elder actors from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. This generation should know all about these peeps that made the Industry!!!!
Raquel was trying to sound old-school and serious about "the work" when she, as well as anybody, had to know that people are interested in the personal lives of actors and actresses. It just isn't realistic to write magazine articles that focus totally on filmmaking and acting. That's why we have TV programs like "Inside the Actors Studio", for example. No wonder Raquel Welch is mostly forgettable while we all remember and love Janis.
I think RAQUEL'S point was quite good actually. At the time Dennis Hopper was very big because of Easy Rider and his quite eccentric lifestyle (e.g. a marriage to Michelle Phillips that lasted 8 days, drug use, etc). Raquel's point of his talent being much bigger than his eccentricities was true of Dennis and many, many other people INCLUDING Janis Joplin. But all the press cares about is the "lifestyle". I'd say Raquel was quite right and making a good point.
That is all BS!!! Who cares about Hoppers acting. It is his weird lifestyle that made him different and somewhat interesting to the public. Poor old Raquel and also Cavettt..Two phonies.

Janis and Raquel were coming from two different points of view about Dennis Hopper. Dennis was stuck in between these two ladies in a sense. One one hand you've got Dennis Hopper the hippie who Janis related to, and on the other you've got Dennis Hopper the actor who Raquel related to. So they're both kinda saying to one another, "Oh no, he belongs with my crowd, we understand him more."
I MISS interview shows in this style & format. Imagine here in 2010 seeing an interview and conversation among 3 "random" people of public interest! Dick Cavett was the top of the genre.
The overly-tanned guy is actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr, son of Douglas Fairbanks who started (I believe) United Artists along with Mary Pickford and others. Janis was extremely smart. Raquel Welch was beautiful and Janis, of course, had a beautiful spirit.
Some of us really do believe beauty radiates from within. The spirit, the vibe, etc. Obviously I'll never get to meet either, but had I had a chance on that day in 1970, I'd have *leaped* over Raquel's superficial shell to get to Janis. De gustibus non est disputandum. Peace.

Both Janis and Raquel had right points of view regarding Dennis Hopper, it's just that Janis was talking more matter of fact about it and Raquel was kind of getting off on how emotional she could be about it. Janis was just sorta like "No need to let it get ya uptight, it just is what it is."
People with differing opinions that were able to express their thoughts without resorting to name calling and hurt feelings. Oh how times have changed in Hollywood!
Janis and Douglas were both brilliant and very honest and good listeners to what all were saying. Raquel though lovely, came off totally daft. She was repeating herself and not listening to anything anyone else said. Very daft, very stubborn. Hope now she is 75 she no longer behaves like that.

I think welch was tring to say theres more to an artist than just their image and u can see why because she is a sex symbol and feels she has more to offer... whereas janice comes from a place of authenticity.. what you see is what you get... both females have their point. Both are authentic.

Just what in the fuck did Janis say or do to make you believe that she upped Rocky intellectually? Janis was a fukin' idiot. A great singer (sometimes), but never did she have anything intellectually to offer.
George I agree, she just seems to come out with hip phrases and all peace and love to go with the persona she had become. She obviously wasn't intelligent enough to prevent her own preventable death. Great voice but the lifestyle choice was very poor.

Raquel was trying to go in on Janis. Raquel was acting Catty , Skyler showing her claws. Janis remained humble. I could feel the tension.

I watch so much Cavett on TH-cam that my nervous system has convinced me that it’s all happening right now. It’s great. I’d much rather be watching 60s and 70s legends than modern nonentities.

I liked the exchange between Janis and Raquel; everybody only saw Janis as as the best rock star that ever lived and Raquel as a body they were two strong, beautiful women with a point of view.

Raquel was trying to sound old-school and serious about "the work" when she, as well as anybody, had to know that people are interested in the personal lives of actors and actresses. It just isn't realistic to write magazine articles that focus totally on filmmaking and acting. That's why we have TV programs like "Inside the Actors Studio", for example. No wonder Raquel Welch is mostly forgettable while we all remember and love Janis.
Ironic that Raquel's acting chops were...well, unmemorable. Closer to Russ Meyer territory, verging on campy.
I think RAQUEL'S point was quite good actually. At the time Dennis Hopper was very big because of Easy Rider and his quite eccentric lifestyle (e.g. a marriage to Michelle Phillips that lasted 8 days, drug use, etc).
Raquel's point of his talent being much bigger than his eccentricities was true of Dennis and many, many other people INCLUDING Janis Joplin. But all the press cares about is the "lifestyle". I'd say Raquel was quite right and making a good point.
That is all BS!!! Who cares about Hoppers acting. It is his weird lifestyle that made him different and somewhat interesting to the public. Poor old Raquel and also Cavettt..Two phonies.
Just look at the talent he had on his stage, just to shoot the shit for an hour.. amazing... 3 people who excelled at their crafts.

Janis and Raquel were coming from two different points of view about Dennis Hopper. Dennis was stuck in between these two ladies in a sense. One one hand you've got Dennis Hopper the hippie who Janis related to, and on the other you've got Dennis Hopper the actor who Raquel related to. So they're both kinda saying to one another, "Oh no, he belongs with my crowd, we understand him more."

I MISS interview shows in this style & format. Imagine here in 2010 seeing an interview and conversation among 3 "random" people of public interest! Dick Cavett was the top of the genre.
The overly-tanned guy is actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr, son of Douglas Fairbanks who started (I believe) United Artists along with Mary Pickford and others. Janis was extremely smart. Raquel Welch was beautiful and Janis, of course, had a beautiful spirit.
Some of us really do believe beauty radiates from within. The spirit, the vibe, etc. Obviously I'll never get to meet either, but had I had a chance on that day in 1970, I'd have *leaped* over Raquel's superficial shell to get to Janis.

Both Janis and Raquel had right points of view regarding Dennis Hopper, it's just that Janis was talking more matter of fact about it and Raquel was kind of getting off on how emotional she could be about it. Janis was just sorta like "No need to let it get ya uptight, it just is what it is."

Janis and Douglas were both brilliant and very honest and good listeners to what all were saying. Raquel though lovely, came off totally daft. She was repeating herself and not listening to anything anyone else said. Very daft, very stubborn. Hope now she is 75 she no longer behaves like that.

What a contrast of Raquel and Janis, glamour and beauty, and well the exact opposite ... I think we need more glamour again..something to strive for instead of surrendering
I think welch was tring to say theres more to an artist than just their image and u can see why because she is a sex symbol and feels she has more to offer... whereas janice comes from a place of authenticity.. what you see is what you get... both females have their point. Both are authentic.

I love the discourse between Janis and Raquel, I wish I could have seen the whole show. This may be wrong, but I with it had just the two women on that show.
Welch is by no means an idiot, She was not only and still is beautiful, but their are brains behind that beauty too. Joplin lived a free lifestyle short of the discipline Welch is used too. Welch is still here, Joplin is not. And that is simply because of those different lifestyles.
