Janis Joplin was a very intelligent, caring and sensitive person who's feelings could be hurt very easily. She, like most people of her sensitivity, hid her insecurities and the hurt from public view for obvious reasons. But, her demons never left her and her lonliness eventually overtook her. She used drugs to escape, like most do, and those drugs eventually killed her. It's not a new story...just an unfortunate one.

Artists have a tougher time of it. But to be in tune to the artist's viewpoint is something I am grateful to have. I would hate to be a person who goes through life never 'getting it'. The end result is what it is. Before the discovery of penicillin, the average lifespan was 40's. Anyone not grateful for their life, I feel, has missed the whole picture. I feel fortunate, because I am grateful. Life has not been easy (nor should it be). Death will come when it does. Until then, enjoy & love

I so agree with you. Janis did her own thing, and paved the way for other women in rock, and in general. She paid a price for her honesty and good heart, and never did find peace of mind. In a way, she passed away at least knowing that she really made it, and was a star in her own right, and no one has been able to compare to her yet.
Love u Janis - rock on forever..

i'm in no way, shape, or form negative about music. i was only being rude because you were being rude first. i couldn't care less about what kinds of music people listen to, but i don't respect artists who are just in it for fame and fortune. kelly may have talent, but she was handed everything through american idol. to me, she just blends in with the rest of the music industry today. she isn't really creative, it's just the same old pop stuff that we've listened to for the past decade.

@Didgeridoozie I think that's so true and regretibly, I don't think that Janis thought much of herself either, which is incredible to me! We never see ourself in the positive light that others do. Most of us tend to jump head first into believing the very worst that people have to say or think about us. Crazy huh? Either way, she was a rare gem, who because of a few insensitive "professional assholes" (pardon my french) who were cruel to her, had no sense of her own self-worth. Sad. Peace.

Nothing wrong with Kelly Clarkson. But the difference between Kelly Clarkson and Janis Joplin is that Janis created herself--and then the media picked up on her.
Whereas in the case of Kelly Clarkson, the media created her: she had to be what the producers wanted her to be: subject of the symbolic order. How could she be a creative individual?
