Day after Fred's crash: To Salida with broken brake - Great Divide Northbound- Bikepacking Day 18

- Day 18 (June 17): We make it from our camping spot at Dome Lake to Sargents! Our ride is marked by spectacular mountain scenery, storms, wildlife and the aftermath of Fred's first crash - broken rear breaks and bruises.
We ride through Rio Grande and San Isabel National Forests into Summit Country and bag Marshall Pass (10,842 ft) crossing the Great Divide yet another time (we stopped counting :)) and going through remote towns like Sargents (“elevation high, population few” based on the welcome sign).
This section is marked by spectacular mountain scenery and wonderful wildlife: We see bighorn sheep, elk, marmots, hawks...Incredible!
We recover from a moment of shock the day before: Fred's rear brake suddenly didn't work (we find out this was due to a broken hydraulic cable) and Fred crashed on the downhill from Carnero Pass. His derailleur is now bend and body scratched, but nothing more severe. We keep having wonderful experiences of kind humans : A couple offers us water up Marshall pass!

@@MarionandFred My biggest concern for the first week is a sweet spot for water. How much did you carry per person at the start? Looking get an idea to safely get through the first few days without carrying too much until I figure out what works for me.
So excited for you, Jeff! I wish we could come 🙌
Regarding water: We carried 7-9 liters per person, to be save, during our initial days in New Mexico (there was NO water in the Gila National Forest, all potential sources were dry) and we were very intentional to refill all our containers at every opportunity. Another strategy we choose was to time our segments in a way that we would camp at water sources, even if it meant shorter or longer days (eg. We camped at Lake Roberts campground, which has water, the day we biked up from Silver City, rather than going into the Gila and camping without a water source (next one is Beavercreek work strati on). In Colorado, it became much easier to get water… perhaps we should do a water video on New Mexico?
Another beautiful episode, thank you. I am curious, was the section from Sargents to Salida particularly tough or just another day in the Tour Divide office? Also, I have to say I so appreciate your Strava data every episode just above, it gives people like me a chance to really study your day and it's in metric, yay.
Hi Lee, it was a pretty nice day, not particularly though. We really liked it. The only though thing was that Fred had quite a few bruises that were sore and his rear brake didn’t work. The next day, coming up, Salida to breakenridge was super though because (1) it’s a long, high elevation day (2) we had crazy headwinds and a few thunderstorms, (3) the key reason: we went up the Gold Dust trail, following the Race GPS, and this was a big mistake! It was basically a hike up! It would have been a great single track downhill during the race but going up and especially during a thunderstorm and at the end of a long day, it was brutal. That will be the next video haha
Really inspiring, great divide is one of my cycling grams. great series I love your channel. Sub to you. I'm trying to increase the bikepacking community and outdoor culture, if you like check my channel too. Stay safe!
Thanks, Luca! For sure!!!
