Togwotee Pass with Pinnacle Buttes in the Rain - Great Divide Northbound - Bikepacking Day 32
Day 32 (July 1): Big mountain ranges in all directions and a thunderstorm that shows us how small we are!
We climb over Lava Mountain and Togwotee Pass into Bridger-Teton National Forest, just before Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks.
We get to spend the whole day in the remote high-mountain county and love the beautiful, calm environment. The route runs through forests of Lodgepole pines- we are amazed how tall and thin they are! Yellow, lilac, red, blue flowers line the side of the road and stand in contrast to the dark green lodgepole pines. Water is abundant - we are still grateful for that after New Mexico and the Great Divide Basin. Creeks and rivers invite us to slow down and take it all in: As we sit by Warm Springs Creek and enjoy the soft babbling of the creek and bird's song, a pair of pronghorn jumps right towards us. What a special moment- we are so grateful to be here!
The climb is gradual and slowly reveals more spectacular views of the massive mountain ranges that surround us: Absaroka, Gros Ventre, and finally the Pinnacle Buttes! It’s humbling and beautiful. Then, the dark clouds that have closed in on us from two directions finally start the action: downpour and what a thunder! No lightning yet, but we know it’s a matter of time. We pedal harder and get a break from the rain after a while. Nature looks even greener now! Fred spots our second beaver on the trip! We make it off the muddy dirt road just before the next big downpour starts - we are totally soaked but happy - and roll a few miles of pavement to our shelter for the night, Togwotee Lodge. We want to avoid the crowds in Teton NP Valley and don’t regret our choice - friendly people, great views, plant-based burgers!

Sorry if I missed it. What was the date of Day 1?
Love your adventure from Marco Island to Key West. I'm planning a similar adventure. As I watch you battle the wind every segment of your journey I pounder if I should do the route in reverse. Take the fairy to Key West and bike back the opposite direction. Same route just backwards. If you were going to do the trip again would you recommend adapting to have the wind at your backs? Or is it really just random luck which way the wind will be blowing the travel days? Thanks
Thanks for the great videos. I think Fred does a great job. What day did you begin your trip? I am headed North bound in June of 2025.
Nice job and great video. I lived in Miami for seven years and made the trip to key west a few times, although never by bike. We did take the bikes to Key West and rode while we were there though 😁 Impressive!
can you also introduce the towns you visited and history sites for tourists ?
Along with my daughter and her partner I rode the 117 miles from Key West to Key Largo in March, 2024. Other than the 7 Mile Bridge the ride was very relaxing. We had zero mechanical or physical issues. It was a GREAT ride!
What road is that
Which road do you mean, there are quite a few in the video ;)?
Wow, impressive climbing and great scenery. I'm looking forward to seeing the New Mexico section this year.
Hi. Are there any videos after Day 32? Did you guys go onto finish? Thanks
Yes, just need to find time to work on them 🙄 We had an addition to the family, which makes it more challenging to find quiet time to edit.
@@MarionandFred Congratulations on your ride and the baby!
I hope all is well, looking to find out why the videos stopped after such a great string of videos of your trip. Hope to see your videos soon.
Did you ever finish ? Why all of a sudden did you quit your videos ?
Hi Bobbie, yes we did finish. I just got super busy with my day-to-day job, and we have a little 1 year old son now ;) I will get back to editing soon though, promise!
Did you make it to the end? There aren't many videos of couples doing it northbound, and my wife and I were quite enjoying your trip.
Oh yes we did. I will start working on footage soon again 🤞
Marion and Fred, thanks so much for this video series, it has been great to watch and I know you'll post the rest of your journey when you have the time. I do have one question, maybe you can answer. Do you regret or wish that you had a bike with a front suspension on the GDMBR, even a moderate amount of travel like, say, 100 mm or less? Much thanks!
Beware of the Grizzlies. 😊
Are you living in Florida ? Beside you guys are from Iowa ?
We live in the Gardenstate New Jersey 😀
What bikes are those ?

I really enjoy watching your rides! Thanks for sharing! What bikes are you using? Do you miss not having a shock?
Open Wide Gravel Bike. Marion walks through the bike in a video before we did the Great Divide. We never missed a shock.
Thanks for sharing these great videos. I am planning to ride Northbound starting next May. Are you sharing your ride data via Ride with GPS / Komoot or similar? Would be great to see the daily stats.
Glad to hear you enjoy them :). In the video description you can find the Strava Link for each day. This gives you all the stats. Just klick on where it says Strava.
nice! What month did you do the ride?
February. You can see more details of the ride when you click on the Strava link.
Awesome looking ride. I’m intrigued. What percentage, roughly, of miles are on bike trails like you mention at 11:32 ?
Your series is the best. So much scenery and such great attitudes. Would love to see the rest. ❤
We had a little addition to our family which kept us very busy. You inspired me, will look at some footage over the Christmas break to get started again 😀
@@MarionandFred Oh, congrats-I guess you have been busy. Love you guys.
Loved watching you fly through the New Mexican desert. Looks like so much fun.

great filming. Thank youi
Another excellent video you guys. I don’t know about tubeless though. I tried it for a month and didn’t like getting sealant all over the underside of my bike frame and all over my shoes when the larger puncture didn’t seal quickly. Hope you took some vinyl gloves with you too. Trying to remove sealant from a tire is a big mess. Especially when you don’t have water to spare. Just my experience though. I have been watching your GDMBR adventure and I enjoy them.
What a pleasant video. Very well done! I really enjoyed it. I have been wanting to do a section of the GDMBR while visiting Grand Teton, NP. This is perfect! Thanks for posting your link to the Strava activity. It certainly takes the guesswork out of it.
Great to hear. Thanks so much!
Glorious ride!🤗
What time of year did you start the northbound GDMBR?
hope all is well. miss your videos

Been watching you last year on Tour Divide. You biking it again this year. I'm from Ashburton in New Zealand.
I wish 😀
This is an older video so you may not see my question. I’ve recently moved to south Florida so this ride interests me. Also I’m in the market for a new bike. What bike brands and models are you riding here. The tire size looks interesting and perhaps more comfortable. Thanks

How is the border wall sad? Are you saying you would rather there be no border at all?
Does anyone have a contact # or info for The Horse Springs Bible Camp.
Is it smooth trail, any gravel or broken road? Any water stops at along the way? Thinking of a TT bike but is a gravel bike better?
I am sad you didn't stop and say hello ! I live in Salida and often ride Marshal Pass. Good times...
Hi, next week we are leaving to make the same trip. Can you tell me the rest stops where you stopped to sleep? Thank you
I just discovered your channel and I love it! Your ride from Marco to Key West was great. I live Homestead and have ridden down to Key Largo a few times. I take a gravel road that intersects Card Sound Rd 4 miles north of Alabama Jacks. It saddens me that someone stole your bike...so disrespectful. Anyway, looking forward to seeing more of your adventures! Tschuss
Very nice video. I am in S. Florida and would like to do this route. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome day of riding! I lived in Salida and loved the tour you provided. Boreas Pass - unreal route to Breck!
Hi Marion & Fred - Have just finished watching all of your great videos, through Day 32, on your Great Divide trip. Very much appreciate your covering so much of the route so that one can see what to expect on the different sections, both gravel, paved and the small amount of singletrack. Am wondering if you will be posting more on this trip? Did you go all the way to Whitefish or Banff or... and just haven't had time to post those videos as of yet?
Hi Fred, please give me the exact name of the company that took you from Havana to Santiago.
Awesome video! Curious what time of the year did you ride?
Met Mark on the New River trail in summer 2022 and can only say you are SO lucky to be in the presence of such a spirit.
Congrats! Cool ride! Marco Island to Key West, nice job guys!
Thank you 😊
beautiful photography.... what camera did you you? and did you have a stablizer as well? many thanks
I was biking from Miami to Tampa last winter, man I miss Florida!
Me too!
Holy crap. That’s quite the journey.
Muy hermosa toda la Florida y Miami lo mejor, los cayos y sus playas insuperables¡¡¡¡¡¡
My country is very beautiful, I was born in the Sierra Maestra, right in the town of Guisa, look what a coincidence, because I was running around on legs, the best years of my childhood. The park as a meeting point for young people, the best clothes on Saturday nights, haha. My grandparents had land and grew food and cattle, very sad, because the Cuban communist government took all that away from them. That's why we ended up living in the town because the government took our land away from us and they didn't come down from the mountain. I was in 2019 and we went to see the lands, pure pastures and they do not produce anything at all, with the need for food that the people of Cuba have. I wish you had visited the Mirador de Guisa, it is very beautiful and you can see the city from the top of the mountain. Greetings.
