    things that I love from my wavecell helmet:
    1. superior security
    2. protection against sun over my head.
    3. good ventilation.
    4. my hair does not pop out from the vents holes, otherwise my hair looks like horns out from the helmet lol.
    5. the helmet perfect fits over my head, it is very very comfortable!! no movements upside down or left-right, the helmet and my head are one.
    thanks

    I’ve used wavecell for snowboarding for years now and this season it saved my life the impact that these helmets can take with you feeling nothing is crazy I hope you never go through that. Complaints of not being able to scratch your head and put your glasses is dumb safety before everything.

    Nice review...i think i might get the newer version of this tomorrow. The head scratch factor and ventilation does make me think twice, but for being on sale i think the price is right. I tested a wave cell for three days recently on a Trek Travel trip. It was heavier than my mips helmet, ventilation felt about the same. I like the magnet closure and the helmet felt really solid on my head. I'd buy one today if my mips wasn't only a month old.

    • @richardharker2775
      @richardharker2775 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AdamJStoryDC No! The shape is fine. When I looked at one in the hand the wavecell material is rather stiff. I can imagine if there was an oblique impact it may collapse and flatten which is a primary reduction in impact forces but a direct dead blow the wavecell structure may act like a multi planed scraper on your skin. A laboratory is one thing to provide comparative results which is good but cyclists won't follow the same form out on the road or track.

    I've been using a Bontrager Specter for about 2 weeks. So far, I like it. My biggest complaint was not being able to stow my glasses in my helmet vents the same way as before with a non-Wavecel helmet. But I hadn't really experimented with it too much. The hottest ride I've gone on was about 75 degrees, with low humidity. So I'm curious to see who well it will vent. But at the end of the day, the reason I purchased one was because of my extensive concussion history. So I'm hopeful that Bontrager's claims are valid. I also have a POC Octal X with the SPIN pads. I'm not convinced that they are superior to MIPS like POC claims.

    • @AdamJStoryDC
      @AdamJStoryDC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nate Ayers I’ve noticed that once you figure out where to put the glasses, it works. My gut feeling is that when summer hits and it’s 100 degrees, I’ll know more about the ventilation. Not sure if you noticed some riders in Paris-Roubaix had them. Concussions suck

    • @nate153bike
      @nate153bike 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AdamJStoryDC oh definitely! My last concussion was from a crash in a crit about 2 years ago. I was going about 26 MPH when there was a big pile-up in front of me. No way to avoid it and I landed on my head hard. I was symptomatic with dizziness, headaches, vertigo, and motion sickness for 17 weeks! I'm not saying that a Wavecel helmet would have prevented it, but it certainly couldn't have made it any worse. I was wearing a Giro Synthe MIPS at the time. Maybe that lessened the severity of the concussion. Who knows? Thanks for the great review!

    • @AdamJStoryDC
      @AdamJStoryDC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Comfort and ventilation are both very important features. But the most important feature is how the helmet works when you crash. It would be helpful if they could design a series of international impact tests that simulate what happens when a rider comes off their bike and then rated. This would then sort out the marketing BS.
    I wear a POC helmet with MIPPS. One reason I chose this brand was that they take all the helmets from the pro riders they sponsor who have crashed and use this in their research when designing their helmets and looking to make them better

    • @AdamJStoryDC
      @AdamJStoryDC  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      POC's were on my list of ones I'd like to try. Great helmets

    • @tychay
      @tychay 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kali does the same, but they do it for ALL their helmets, not just their sponsored pros. This is one of the advantages of a lifetime crash replacement (on the first crash) is they keep and research their returns, and they get a lot of returns because their policy is so generous (haven’t seen a policy like that since Bell in the mid 1990’s or most brands had in the early 90’s). Now most companies offer a discount, but by the time I’ve crashed (if at all) the replacement can be had for less than the discount. (Treks policy is limited to 1 year).
      They use a tech that is halfway between Wavecel and MIPS. It keeps the opening open, but uses an elastomer that accepts both linear and rotational give,
      The issue with them is their road line is a little lacking since they are mostly a mountain biking/bmx company.

    conceptually, it makes more sense. I mean you can basically render mips useless by rather little pressure, which means an actual, even small impact, will tranfer a lot of energy still. Of course mips doesnt like it because their system is produced for like 2 dollars but cost 20 retail

  • @alscyclesport

    Good review, sadly I chose the xxx wavecell and there is no way on earth you can attach your shades on them. So will just need to keep that in mind, certainly for the xxx model, look for another option to store away your shades. I also felt like on this model reviwed that they held but only just. You would not trust an expensive pair of shades over some proper bumpy roads

    I recently got the Specter WaveCel Helmet. I really wanted to like this helmet, but after several rides I have noticed something very annoying, and potentially unsafe (at least I'd imagine it'd be unsafe). The strap loosens after riding for some time, and when I stop, I find myself having to pull the straps tighter. Then after more riding, again, re-tighten. I'm not mountain biking either, no jarring, just road cycling. So, this, in addition to being annoying, seems like it would impact the effectiveness of the helmet if I did happen to crash. I've never had straps loosen on any other helmet I've owned. I thought the buckle would be an issue, but I'm ok with the buckle, but I'm not ok with the strap loosening. So, I'm returning this helmet and getting a helmet with MIPS and a strap that doesn't loosen.

    • @AdamJStoryDC
      @AdamJStoryDC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I noticed that too and found that almost all helmets do that to some extent, but the fabric they used was very smooth and combined with sweat, it loosened. I used some tape to solve it, and eventually got a Specialized MIPS helmet (see other video: th-cam.com/video/DYh8QcgeVNo/w-d-xo.html ) and I have noticed less strap "slippage."

    Great review. I just bought a white Wavecel Specter a few minutes back. I was using a cheap Specialized Align helmet for about a year (it does not have MIPS) and it served me well but wanted to buy something which has more safety. I haven’t tested the helmet by riding and it is still in the box. I am kind of worried about the ventilation aspect. I live in TX and it reached higher 90s in summer and best part of fall. Do you suggest going for a MIPS helmet? I have Bontrager Circuit MIPS on mind as well. Please let me know.

      @AdamJStoryDC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you want ventilation and lightness, I'd go with the Specialized MIPS Prevail II or Evade. SUPER light, well ventilated, but $250/275. The Wavecel is heavier, not as ventilated and most importantly, you can't get a finger in the vents to scratch (um...not important until you actually have an itch). It's been 90+ degrees where I am now and it would be nice to have more ventilation, but I'm surviving. Those issues won't occur once the temperature goes down. The Wavecel is a deal IMHO because it was $150 for what's advertised as superior protection. If I'm going to need a helmet, I want to have THIS helmet on, but if ventilation and weight are bigger issues...get the Specialized one.

    Nice video. BTW, the Prevail looks way better on u than the wave cell. I was thinking of getting the wave cell, but now I would not. Super duper dorky looking.

    This helmet should be good at fending insects off. So you have to sacrifice something in the itch vs flies balance))

      You might be surprised how often you want to do that. You don't know until you can't.

      @@AdamJStoryDC Lol I do it often on my current helmet with the vents so I can reach in with my fingers.... Its gonna bother me that I won't be able to scratch now with the Wavecel helmet if I do get it....
