friend of mine is keeping them outside in small pond, sometimes top level gets some ice, so they can tolerate wide ranges of temperatures, you won't make them breed in winter outside but at least you can keep them in unheated aquarium inside - big savings on energy
I personally feel it is better this way as they become more hardy, have a break from breeding and also produce healthier offspring. This is my experience 😊
@SerendibAquatics And they do fine in my unheated tank that goes down to 5c in winter. However they do not breed during that period. In summer they go outdoors in a black tub that goes up to 22-23 degrees in peak of summer. Then they breed like crazy. I cant help to wonder what keeping medaka in unnatural hot water does to the metabolism and life span? There are studies on koi and it affects life span greatly.
@greenmachinesweden brother i agree with you. Medaka will thrive in asian contries that naturaly have high temperatures also. Yes as you mentioned that high T may be a cause of reduce lifespan of the fish. According to my expeeience medaka can easily tolerate wide range of water parameters.
I have a small tank set up for the eggs, but what do you do once a few of them hatched but some of them haven’t? Do you transfer the fry to a different holding tank and wait for other eggs to hatch separately?
No.no. keep them in same tank until 3 or 4 days. Feed them very small am9unt of egg yolk solution. After day 5 you can transfer if you want. I put eggs 3 days into same tank. Next 3 days to a another tank. It is easy.
@@SerendibAquatics i see. do you do small water change to this fry tank until day 5 when you move them? i guess i worry the feeding would contaminate the egg that hasn’t hatched.
It is according to the fry count and amount of egg yolk you put to the tank. Purpose of water change in fry tank is maintain the water quality. Most of the time when we use egg yolk solution , remain foods produce ammonia and waste products. When we do daily small water changes it is better to maintain water chemistry of the tank. I also feed them but contamination may be their. Tanin contain water give some protection and low dose of food may be effective against contamination.
I find the cooler temperatures somewhat better for keeping and breeding. In the UK we'd keep them outside in small ponds or rain barrels without a heater and they survived ice and snowy conditions well. Temperature: 64.5-71.5 °F (they tolerate a very wide range, but this is considered ideal)
They are platinum half beak fish. I l put the breeding vedeo later. They are live bearers. Alredy have 40 plus babies at the moment. They are surface feeders most of the time.
i have 4 of them , 2 males and 2 females . Ive seen the females wth eggs but i cant seem to find them and i never see babies even thought i have a well planted tank . What should i do ? and if i use your method by taking the females out , how do i know that the eggs are fertilised ? Thanks in advance 😄
Good. you confirmed that there are 2 males. If males are mature enough to spawn. At the time they lay eggs males will put sperms at the same time. Then when you see females with eggs alredy fertile. No matter take the females and collect eggs. But put all eggs into same water from same tank. And parameters should be same. Planeria and snails should not be in the hatching tank. Then after 5 to 8 days you will see fry.
They are platinum half beak. Very nice surface dwelling fish. They have Very unique sets of behaviours. I will update with full breeding guide. Now already i breed them.
In my outside tank temperature go upto 31 cecius some times. Still there are doing well. I think 26 to 31 is ok. But further temperature may not be good.
they thrive just fine in green water and or dirty water.... i never do water changes on mine and they breed like crazy and thrive. they are hardy beyond belief.
I had 3 fry, they died after a week. I tried to make infusoria but failed. Then I gave them some boiled eggyolk but they didnt eat it. I know its nature but I'm still sad about it.
If we put very small number of fry into very large tank with much more plants without any other fish they will survive. If we separate 3 fry and try to feed them most of the time it will fail. If you have less number of fry. Below 10 please keep them in a large tank with much more plants they will grow slowly. Next time try it.
Yes correct. But i kept some more fish with them. To confirm the stability of tank I aerate all my tanks. 1) it will help to give proper oxygen into the water. 2) toxic gas ( ammonia and clorine ) will go out with it. 3) water movements give the active aquarium feeling. You are correct without aeration we can keep medaka rice fish

It is actually not strictly warm water fish, i Japan there are kept in outdoor porch containers year-round. That is why they are excellent pond fish.

Agree. They are stable with more range of temperature.
And easy to keep and breed.
They are just the perfect pet fish for me!
I started with Oryzias woworae, before I finally got the "proper" Japanese ones...

how many days before the eggs hatches?
In rice fish it takes much more time to hatch.
Day 4 to day 8 takes to hatch.
