Whole sale resale stores receive "culls" which is why the store often gets "random colors/ morphs". These American made names aren't represented under Japanese pedigree lineages and aren't maintained properly to represent their strain name status, thus the industry or whole seller just gives them a "basic name" for reselling purpose. Also to add on their names are not a "species" they are a strain. The species as a whole is Oryzias latipes well known as medaka aka Japanese rice fish. There is a lot of aspects when it comes to properly managing medaka, this includes strictly the said strain itself, needing to produce at least 30% true to what the pedigree characteristics are suppose to be. 3 (or more) out of ever 10 must produce the proper linage name stated. Otherwise it can not be called the pedigree name. This is strictly the reason why breeders and well known enthusiasts option to buy and bid on high value medaka pairs that exceed over tens of thousands of dollars, because producing a strain with proper unique characteristics that can carry over takes several or so generations to properly manage. Sure, it is easy to just keep medaka, but maintaining it traditionally and focusing on the art behind it is a lot of work that people do not see or give enough recognition.

it's just a feeder fish that became popular...
the only reason why they became so popular is cuz of covid...that's it
they're not tropical fish, so they're hardy they also breed like rabbits (they reach maturity when they're barely 3 months old so getting new variant generations is super fast)...no heater, no filter, that's it...
I give mine away for free or use them as bait or feeder fish...

The slightly different Daisy’s Ricefish are amazing on a dark substrate. They require warmer water but still highly recommended.

I have some beautiful Daisy's Blues. Their colors pop and the seller had seen a picture and was like how did you their colors to pop and the blue so strong. Quality food is the key to beautiful fish. Great video!

Do y'all think ricefish would be okay outdoors in TX summers? Water temps can reach into the upper 80's - legit like 89ish sometimes so I'm wondering if that would be too hot for them

I started with 12 pearl galaxy ricefish (ordered from Aqua Huna) about a year ago ... or that's what they were labeled. After breeding, I've had as many as 150 at a time (I only have a few small tanks), but about 80% have been what I believe to be red cap/orange cap. After I realized the difference, I checked the originals, and, sure enough, two were (or looked to be) red/orange cap. In the fry tank, I separated out the pearl galaxies. The supposed red/orange caps continue to breed true. I've been selling them to an LFS for $4 each in store credit. Other than looking through photos online, is there any way to tell if mine really are red/orange caps? Is there someone who I can send pics to to help me identify them for certain? And why are the red/orange caps so much more expensive and hard to find?

Mine from Dansfish were labelled pearl galaxy also. Same as you, there are quite a few red heads in the fry. I also got about 150 fry from a two to three week egg collecting. If anyone's interested in juveniles locally, I'm in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. 10 for 20.
