This is mostly an aside, but I had a really cool Social Anthropology professor that did some kind of study in southern Mexico, where things like NAFTA forced the locals into the hands of basically local warlords? Gangsters? Landlords? It's hard to remember which is most appropriate, but...they've grown corn there for so many generations that it's basically impossible to pivot. Sad story.
Hi Meta, huge fan of your channel and I would love to do a podcast episode on this sort of topic. Might be a little boring for some but I think it's interesting to dive more into the politics and economics of Star Wars. Great video as always ^^
What I still want to know is how Dooku was able to get everybody in the CIS to work together. Even ignoring the megacorporations on the Separatist Council, there were still plenty of reasons for the worlds of the CIS to not like each other. Democracies vs Autocracies. Freedom fighters vs slave empires. Peace lovers vs arms dealers. We see the Rebels bring plenty of cells together, but we’ve never seen historical and political tensions among the Rebels. At most we see groups like the Partisans advocating for bloody warfare while other groups like Phoenix Cell promote a less bloody approach. But with the Separatist Alliance, I wouldn’t be surprised if there Senate had just as much infighting as the Republic’s senate. We always think of the Separatists as a United force while the Republic is always tearing at itself over whether to fight the war or if it could afford to at all. We know about the War, Peace, and Independence factions in the Separatist Senate. Between them and the Separatist Council, things must have been hectic.
I see the CIS being like this world’s BRICS or CIS (confederation of independent states consisting mostly of post-Soviet Countries). There is no common values between China, Pakistan, Russia or let’s say India. Only conflicting and similar interests. India and Pakistan are almost at war and Pakistan - an Islamic Republic - is supported by an atheist China who also has bad relations with India. But at the same time India has fantastic relations with Russia who is dependant on China. They’ll talk down each other on certain issues but unite when talking about the fight against the monogamous world order (AKA the West/The USA/The Republic). That is what unifies them. Chinese mega corporations and Russian oligarchs would essentially be the Separatist Council but their discourse against the hypocrisy of the USA/The Republic and - in their mind - just as awful if not more awful crimes and systemic issues speaks to the disenfranchised of the world/the galaxy, all the while a huge chunk of the world/galaxy thinks that both sides are a bunch of thugs.
It shows how important the politics in star wars are and how it all works within the galactic government.Even if some fans don't like it when star wars gets political.
With decades of worldbuilding through other material, it makes sense that the reason for the war would become a little more complex than just "Sheev does stuff"
