Never forget 1996. Rest in Peace corner worker Garry Arvin and driver Jeffery John “Jeff” Krosnoff
The best street race on the calendar, it never disappoints!
My city! My Indy 🥹 A few sleeps away.
This was great, thanks for this. PUMPED UP FOR THIS WEEKEND
Thank you Indycar, I'm loving these historic uploads!!
I saw it Michael Andretti back in 1989 best race ever!🏎🏁
Need more of these videos! Great format.
I was there for all the CART races…loved when cigarette companies could sponsor in sports!!!!!
Other memorable Toronto events:
1998: Dario Franchitti qualifies pole and dominates the first 2/3rds of the race, before crashing with brake issues. This opens the race to a duel between Michael Andretti and Alex Zanardi for the win.
1999: While not a very impressive race, Franchitti grabs the lead on the first lap and leads every circuit to a dominant win, while his title rival Montoya crashes out. Might not be crazy on it's own, but in context of the '99 season as a whole it's pretty definitive.
2000: Cristiano Da Matta has his break-out race, spending the middle third of the race flogging his machine to fight with Michael Andretti's superior car, the two of them trading the top spot constantly. Sadly after the pitstops Da Matta would fade, but Michael would scoot away to his last Toronto victory.
2005: Not included in this video was how Wilson and Servia inherited the lead. Bourdais led the opening part of the race with Tracy hanging out right behind him, and during the first round of pitstops Tracy short-pitted and got out of the pits not-quite-even with Bourdais. They made contact, ripping off half of Tracy's front wing and cutting down Bourdais' right rear tire. Tracy would stay out with a wounded racecar and continue to lead until he ran himself out of fuel, handing the fight over to Wilson and Servia.
2014: Two Toronto races were held on the same day, with Bourdais snapping a long winless streak in Race 1, and eventual LeMans winner Mike Conway would win race 2 off the back of great tire strategy, both races taking place on a heavily wet track.
2019: Simon Pagenaud and Scott Dixon duel nose-to-tail in the closing stages, with Dixon over-acheiving in a car that had been daaged earlier in the day.
Cigarette and alcohol advertising, turbocharged CART cars, a good track layout. 2001 was peak
