weve had 3 just got the 2019 yesterday the 09 we had for 263k miles with no problems besides the electric steering going out and with the 15 model we have 157k on it and no problems at all so far, definately a reliable well built vehicle
Honestly, the console is one of the better ones I've seen. Buttons in practical locations, simple sleek layout; not trying to do anything fancy. Unexpectedly impressed. Interested to test drive.
Brian D. Same. I have a Cruze but the design for the console is spectacular. I dislike the console designs on so many other cars. Very messy and usually have a lot long on. Love simplicity better.

Thank you for reviewing this car. 8:38 I think the side profile of this Malibu is one of the most attractive of any current production car, in any price class. The arc line of the roof is incredibly smooth. The surface sculpting of the doors creates depth and shadow. The overhangs are short without being stubby. Overall proportions are balanced. 4:09 The center console is refershingly simple. The infotainment screen is as well integrated into the consoele as any I have seen.
The Malibu seems so much more upscale than anything else in its price class, but with the new Camry and altima and even the new accord, Chevy has to step up their game if they want to stay on top. Right now the new altima takes the cake for standard features and upscale styling.
Bought my 2019 Malibu LT with leather upgrade based on this review. I absolutely love it! Well done. I traded in my 2006 Toyota Avalon and am not at all disappointed. I have been recommending the Malibu to everyone. Fun to drive and really good on gas.
Hey Nancy great choice, like others have said CVT transmissions can be problematic, I recommend you make sure you change the transmission fluid every 60,000 miles or so

That is indeed a 2019 Malibu, which means the color is not Blue Velvet. Blue Velvet was discontinued on Malibus mid 2018 model year. I'm guessing that one is Northsky Blue. Side blind zone alert is available on that trim level (LT). Your rental car does not have it, but it is available in the Driver Confidence Pkg on LT trim.
Driving a ‘loaner’ 2019 Malibu while my dealership is fixing an issue with my ac on a used Jeep I bought from them. Interesting how it ‘auto’ stops when you are stopped at a red light. It basically shuts itself off when you stop more than 3 seconds. Gas also goes a long way for in-city driving. And when you do start to go (you don’t have to slam the gas pedal as the narrator suggests to feel results. It’s quite fine to let it get into drive) its darting speed is satisfying). From a red light, once it ‘restarts’ it can get up to 40 mph startlingly quick. It’s not illegal to see the cars in your rearview fade as you resume the mph speed limit 🤣 The bluetooth/sound/wifi/etc interface is easy to use and hard to resist. It knows when you play with it as you drive so don’t be naughty. For a Chevy sedan it’s not bad at all. I would not be mad if it was gifted to me. I still would like my Jeep back though.
your voice is really nice to listen to. great review. i drive a 2014 chevy malibu LTZ 2.0 Turbo Diesel. Sadly it was the last model year that was sold in europe. greetings from germany.
I had this exact car as a rental currently I did road trip North from Merrillville Indiana to Ludington Michigan and back and I averaged over 40 miles to the gallon at 70 miles an hour with the air conditioning running
I’m renting a 2020 Malibu LT with the upgradedwheels. Car is dark grey metallic. I like the styling. 1.5 with CVT. My first time driving CVT and it’s not that bad. Turbo kicks in when needed and has power on the highway. Getting 30 in mixed driving and 35 on the highway with regular gas. Like the Apple CarPlay functions. Cloth LT seats are comfy. LT has heated seats, separate AC temp controls for driver and passenger, and has remote start. Not a bad mid sized American car overall.
The Malibu will soon be Chevy's flagship, with the Impala being dropped midyear next year (as well as the Cruze, Cadillac XTS, Buick LaCrosse, and Chevy Volt), and it's actually not too much smaller than the Impala (it'll also be the lone American midsize sedan with the Ford Fusion being discontinued after 2019). I'll miss the nearly 300 HP that you get from the Impala, though the 2.0T Malibus are still pretty quick. Maybe Chevy will drop the 3.6L V6 in the Impala? Still the Malibu is a nice car. Especially with all the new standard equipment for 2019 (namely, the previously-optional 8" touchscreen, with an all-new interface for 2019). :)
Malibu 1.5t is a steal at $14ak or the Malibu 2.0T at low $20's and runs rings around the Accord 2.0T 10-speed in handling. The secret in these 2.0T engines is the $300-600 ecu tune good for +360 lb-ft of torque. That is +100 lb-ft of torque is a V6 killer.
I currently have the same rental car as you same color, and I have a GT‘s kombucha in the cupholder LOL. It really is a beautiful color, the 17 inch rims are a great design, a little too small for the wheel wells, the car feels happy because of the turbo but sometimes on the freeway it can be kind of a dog, I agree the entertainment touchscreen is awesome, it rides well, it’s very comfortable, bumps and speed bumps are very well muted, I feel that the side mirrors are way too small, also I had to take out the rear headrests to be more comfortable. Backseat is huge, all in all I think it’s a really nice car, I am averaging about 28 but I have the AC running a good amount because it’s almost 100 here in San Diego, thanks for the review

I noticed many of your rentals are brand new if not first time rent. I typically rent from standard non-airport locations and my rentals have a few thousand miles on them, if not tens of thousands.
Thanks for the kind words. I do spend waaaaay to much time editing. And no, I don't think I've ever rented from an Airport. I almost always rent from the same suburban Enterprise by my house. I've been going there several times a week for over three years now. Crazy.

The Premier the top trim is going for 27k in my area possible rebates and discounts can get you out of the door probably with 24-25k for a premier. This is a lot of car for the price!
loving mine. Some sensor died so it was shopped a week after owning it, so I was pretty upset, but now I got it back I'm loving the mileage. 65 miles to my work every morning, the car reported 43.9 average mileage yesterday. Saves me alot of money without a big price or a loss in features.
Keshaun V 1: No one accused you of making anything up? (I said “Not to sure about that) 2: I did as you demanded and looked it up. There is not wireless charging for the 2019+ Here is what google has to say : For 2016/2017/2018 Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Cruze the wireless charging pad is located in a vertical slot in the center console behind the gear control.
I have! In fact, it was my last rental. I'm hoping to edit and post it tomorrow. I thought it was okay. mine had a few fun features to play with, but otherwise it was just okay in my opinion.
100 Rental Cars good to know. I’m not really liking the styling. I liked how the previous Santa Fe Sport looked more “simple”, where the new one is just too angular and “aggressive” looking
Great review as always! Not a GM fan. At all. I’m more of a Chrysler person, I’ve just never liked GM products, but always loved Chrysler vehicles. Nice video and happy New Year!
@@stepheng3667 if you care about driving and handling, for $22K a Malibiu 2.0T runs rings around Accord 2.0T 10-speed in Motor Trend data tests. The Malibu 2.0T gets almost 40 mpg highway too.
I’m trying to love this car. But sadly GM quality isn’t par with other car brands. I have a 2016 Kia Soul and it’s has soft plastic with leather almost on all the key points of the dash. GM loves using hard plastic and it sucks when you notice it because it’s an eye sore. Once you see it you can’t unsee it. GM seriously needs to use better quality materials in their cars. Even some of their fit n finish isn’t great
Yes and even more so for 2019! The L model trades its basic am fm radio for a touchscreen this year which makes it an even better value, and every single model gets the 8in touchscreen.
@@yosikuiYeah, I'd have to just buy it from overseas as there are no Chevrolet dealerships in Finland, I am currently developing a software hopefully that'll get me enough money for the car about $30.000 for a used newest model.
The majority of Malibus are equipped with the 1.5T and CVT. The Hybrid technically has a CVT (I dont believe Chevy refers to it as such however) and the 2.0T I think has a 9 speed automatic. The 1.5T is the engine offered in the majority of Malibu models and is expected to sell the most out of the three powertrain options. With the Cruze diesel going away with the entire Cruze lineup, Chevy needs to implement the diesel and 9 speed automatic into more of their products (the equinox will be the only one with the diesel remaining in their lineup, at least here in the u.s.).
Unfortunately that's unlikely to happen. If they decided to put the Buick Regal GS engine in a Malibu SS, that would be cool, but we can only dream because theres little to no market for it.
They're not underpowered and it doesn't NEED a V6.. The 2.0t is almost too much power for the standard brakes and suspension in this car. More than enough. I've owned twin turbo Audi's and Turbo Subaru's.. I leased the Malibu with the 1.5t because even the 2.0t is more than the car really needed.
Well, the Malibu came in 5th on the list for mid size cars, and the 2.0 Premier Malibu with the 9 speed will out run and out gun the Honda Accord 2.0 with the 10 speed, check out the specs.
I rented a previous gen Cruze once and someone had spilled coffee on the dashboard and the cloth was all sticky. Bad idea because you're gonna spill liquids onto it.
Excellent. I’m one yeah into the 2019 Malibu RS. CVT is responsive and smooth, no jerking or lag. Took it on a 600 mile round trip last month, it did very well.
Christopher Ashley-Smith Awesome! Back in 2015 I had rented a 2014 for almost two months while the car I had at the time was in for extensive hail damage repair. I loved it, and that’s what persuaded me to buy the 2019 last year. No regrets.
I'm gonna say for now. Fairfax Assembly outside of Kansas City is staying open for now. The Malibu will become Chevys flagship after the Impala is dropped in June of this year and it's two production plants are shuttered. I expect to see it go a little more upscale, and pricing to increase to reflect it's new flagship status in chevys lineup.
Ok guys should I trade in my 2015 camaro which I owe 10,300 on for a new 2019 Malibu.. I’m in love with that car.. I plan on leaving 1,500 down payment.. Malibu’s In SoCal are around 22,000..
Rented one for a week, cheap plastic interior, engine shuts off when stopped and then starts again when you accelerate, has a delay reaction (very irritating). Engine stops when stopped and the AC doesn't function so it starts to get warm immediately. Power is lacking, rented a Kia and a Hyndai the last two trips and they performed much better. Styling is nice but this car is lacking in many areas.
General motors had one a horrible thing, the new keyfob and push button start. How the heck do you get a good duplicate key/fob with out going broke. I have been driving now for 65 years and never have seen such a mess to get a backup key for my car. I have driven everyting since a 41 ponitiac, a 54 Gmc, a 55 Buick, a 67 Chevy pickup a 2004 Chevy pick up and always had a key availagle to duplicate any where. Now GM want's to bankrupt with a large payment for extra keys. I normally keep 4 keys stash in different places incase they get lost. I love my car but hate duplicating key/fob. Any previous car I could get duplicate keys but the nearest place to get the newer laser cut high security key is 2 hours drive away. What the hell
Lawnmowers had bigger engines than 1.5L. Also, I hate those rubber coverings for the buttons on the steering wheel. Those will wear out rather quickly.
Honestly it will be better than the plastic buttons they used to use... if you look at virtually any mid to late 2000s gm product youll see the finish on the plastic buttons has worn off due to pressing and you can see the LEDs through the faded plastic.
I'm considering buying one of these since I've just about had it with my Chrysler 200 which has a leaking head gasket. I like the Camry and Accord but they're a bit out of my price range and the dealers always seem to mark the price up just because they're imports and I'm sure as hell not buying a Nissan or Kia.
@La Capone Nissan and their CVT transmissions are terrible the one in my wifes 2015 Versa failed at 44k miles despite servicing it for everything at the dealership since brand new and driving conservatively. As for Kia vehicles they're just not that appealing to me.
Although not the same car, I own a 2013 Buick Lacrosse premium, and I have nothing but good things to say about GM quality, at least Buick quality. Impeccable fit and finish both inside and out. Soft leather covering most all surfaces, except a small portion of the lower doors where the map pockets are. The car still drives like it did brand new. .Tight as a drum. It won out over a comparison test with a Lexus ES350 at the time. A friend who owns a 2013 Accord drove it and said it drove 10 times better than his Honda. A suspension designed in Germany , gives a firm, supple, stable ride that's awesome. On top of that, reliability that's been perfect from day one. I know its a midsize that's on the upper end of the price scale, but does it ever deliver. Best and most enjoyable car I've ever had. I must say I like this models style over the newer current model , which I know GM cut from their lineup. Maybe that's part of the reason.
Well we all know GM is letting go most of their car lineup while they r concentrating on their trucks and SUV'S which is pretty sad because not everyone likes trucks and suv's. Even though their keeping their two muscle cars, the Corvette and Camaro for racing performance against other competitors and the Malibu for a regular small family or single person but that's not enough. It's to bad though GM won't bring back the classic cars like the Chevelle, the Nova, the Corvair and the Impala back from a four door to a two door sports coupe when they can also bring back the Caprice Classic and to make it the same full size family sedan of the last year's 2018 Chevy Impala for the public since many people from across the nation be asking and begging to bring back for like over twenty to thirty years. for an example, Dodge brought back the Charger, the Challenger, and the Dodge Dart for the dodge team which was the smartest thing to do. As of right now they r in the decision on bringing back the barracuda and if they do, that's another point they have gain for the dodge supporters. If GM would change their mind on bringing back these cool classic muscle cars to face off these other competitors besides dodge, it would make history again. Like have the Chevelle face against the Dodge Charger, the Camaro face the Dodge Challenger and the Corvair face the Dodge Dart. If Dodge does decide to bring back the Barracuda, than bring back the Nova to face against it. The Corvettes should concentrate only on competing the other faster cars like the Nissan GT-R, Porsche, Ford GT, Ferrari ect ect. If I were the CEO of GM, I would consider making this happen for the GM fans and give them what they want, not what I want... Plus to get the extra points, I would bring back the Monte Carlo for a nice luxury sports coupe and make it look like the first 1970 version and last but not least, the three legendary Corvettes to face the top 3 fastest European sports cars in the world. The ZL-1, the Baldwin Motion phase 3 GT, and the Manta Ray. But I will have them front engines only and just keep C8 Corvette Zora mid engine only. ZL-1 face the Koenigsegg Agera R. Baldwin Motion Phase 3 GT face the Hennessey Venom GT. Manta Ray face the Hennessey Venom F5. But For the rest of the Vettes like the Stingray, Grand Sport, Z06, ZR-1 and the Mid engine Zora I would have them face the other fast competitors. Oh well that's just my opinion.
Happy New Year!

The Premier the top trim is going for 27k in my area possible rebates and discounts can get you out of the door probably with 24-25k for a premier. This is a lot of car for the price!
Which is why I'm going to buy a 19 premier you can't touch a top line honda in the 20s.
Great review, glad you’re back!😸
I just hit 120,000 miles on my 2009 Chevy Malibu. But the electrical has been going out and it’s just been crazy
A Chevy cvt I'm not taking my chances on that
You’re smart
Yeah any CVT other than Toyota is questionable at best
Happy New Year! Gonna travel to Orlando and booked a Mercedes C class rental car from Sixt. So exciting!
loving mine. Some sensor died so it was shopped a week after owning it, so I was pretty upset, but now I got it back I'm loving the mileage. 65 miles to my work every morning, the car reported 43.9 average mileage yesterday. Saves me alot of money without a big price or a loss in features.
Your voice is so soothing
Thanks Shawn!

Have you seen the new 2019 Santa Fe? What are your thoughts? I like the previous generation better.
It is a bit angry looking, right? Unfortunately, that type of styling seems to be the direction most of the manufacturers are going.
Does this model have the accent lighting across the doors and dash?
Awesome review
Thanks!
Great review as always! Not a GM fan. At all. I’m more of a Chrysler person, I’ve just never liked GM products, but always loved Chrysler vehicles. Nice video and happy New Year!
Happy New Year!

The biggest problems with the Malibu are four other cars named Camry, Sonata, Optima and Accord which this car just cannot compete against.
Mike Morales and Altima. And Taurus. And 300. And Fusion. All of the cars we both listed are FAR better options...
@@dalegribble6996 not for the price. Malivu offers more at $15K than less
All of them have their flaws but still all are good values
I just read an on line comparison today of 10 mid size cars, Malibu came 5th, ahead of Sonota, optima and Fusion.
@@stepheng3667 if you care about driving and handling, for $22K a Malibiu 2.0T runs rings around Accord 2.0T 10-speed in Motor Trend data tests. The Malibu 2.0T gets almost 40 mpg highway too.
Where do you put gas in chciago at $1.90 per gallon?? Because I haven't seen that price anywhere in Chicago in over 4 years lol
Hey glad you‘re back we missed you!

Will you test drive the 2019 Kia Forte?
I hope to soon. Tonight I just picked up the 2019 Hyundai Sante Fe. But I'm sure I'll get a Forte very soon.
I like this Chevrolet Malibu and I will buy one I love a midsize car and it fit me just fine this Malibu Chevrolet is back with this Malibu
I bet this guy was a flight attendant at some point.
Unfortunately no.
The way you speak and point to things reminded me of how flight attendants give the preflight instructions. Lol. Very well done video.
are you in Texas because this looks like where I live
Nope, not in Texas. I live - and usually film - in the suburbs of Chicago.
Even some of their fit n finish isn’t great
I agree. And I love the Kia Soul too. I'm hoping to try out the electric model this year. 🤞
Seems like a good deal for the price
Yes and even more so for 2019! The L model trades its basic am fm radio for a touchscreen this year which makes it an even better value, and every single model gets the 8in touchscreen.
Good family sedan
Would this be a good car to buy as I turn 18?
Frie just make sure you can afford it . Then you’ll be fine
@@yosikuiYeah, I'd have to just buy it from overseas as there are no Chevrolet dealerships in Finland, I am currently developing a software hopefully that'll get me enough money for the car about $30.000 for a used newest model.
rear and side visibility pfft. the windows on new cars getting smaller each year. models without the back-up camera are just not safe.
This has a backup camera and visibility is great, actually.
I feel like the 2018 model is better?
How did you find the CVT??
Always thought this was a nice looking car.
The CVT replaces the 6at paired to the 1.5t for 2019. You can only now buy the 1.5t with a CVT.
UNDER POWERED PERIOD It needs the v6 thats in the Impala.
Agreed! The Impala's V6 is amazing.
Gas here in Los Angeles is around $4-5
I suppose vice-versa. Malibu 2 (2017
Move that power to the rear wheels and I’m in.
I know, wouldn't that be wonderful? Unfortunately almost everything is FWD these days.
@@100RentalCars BUT FROUNT WHEEL DRIVE IS MUCH EASIER FOR HANDLEING !
Do you use premium gas? 93 or 89? I just bought a 2019 LT
Well, the Malibu came in 5th on the list for mid size cars, and the 2.0 Premier Malibu with the 9 speed will out run and out gun the Honda Accord 2.0 with the 10 speed, check out the specs.
The car looks great, but I can’t get past the cloth on the dashboard. It just looks so cheap to me.
It's the equivalent of having carpet in the bathroom. Big nope. Idk what the designers were thinking with this
Sean Sean leather on the dashboard is available with the leather interior.
I rented a previous gen Cruze once and someone had spilled coffee on the dashboard and the cloth was all sticky. Bad idea because you're gonna spill liquids onto it.
Hi
What is this color?
Hello! It's called "Blue Velvet Metallic". If you're interested, I put the paint color and all the specs in the description of the video.
How is the cvt ?
Excellent. I’m one yeah into the 2019 Malibu RS. CVT is responsive and smooth, no jerking or lag. Took it on a 600 mile round trip last month, it did very well.
@@km3663m Good to hear! I just bought a 2014 ls with the 6 speed auto. I love it!
Christopher Ashley-Smith Awesome! Back in 2015 I had rented a 2014 for almost two months while the car I had at the time was in for extensive hail damage repair. I loved it, and that’s what persuaded me to buy the 2019 last year. No regrets.
are chevy newer models reliable easy and cheap to maintain like toyota and honda?
No theyre not reliable as before
Trunk Release?
Will there be a 2020 Malibu?
Yes
@@dannya4974 didn't GM close many plants that's why I ask
@@runningcoyote3897 yes, that's part of the reason why the other chevy sedans are being discontinued
WHAT 1.9 usd per gallon for gas..... Here in Vancouver Canada I pay an equivalent of 4.13 usd per gallon for regular.....
Yowza!
I’m watching this in 2022 looking for a good used car and he said gas is around 1 something now it’s 4-5 dollars
They should make the Malibu a mid size Camaro sedan like they did with the Chevrolet Blazer.
Nice car
Wait why does it look like a shitty version of the Saab PhoeniX concept?
Looks like it got hit with the ugly shovel. This refresh killed the new design they had for 2016... 😥
I think it looks slick to each is own
Is it just me or did they rip the entire design from the Saab PhoeniX?
Poor gear shift 🤣🤣🤣racking throught them gears lmao
Lawnmowers had bigger engines than 1.5L. Also, I hate those rubber coverings for the buttons on the steering wheel. Those will wear out rather quickly.
Honestly it will be better than the plastic buttons they used to use... if you look at virtually any mid to late 2000s gm product youll see the finish on the plastic buttons has worn off due to pressing and you can see the LEDs through the faded plastic.
Name a lawnmower with a bigger engine.
Could you rent a Chevy Cruze
My 2017 lt has a 12 v, 120 v and 2 usb ports in the back..
Same here, wonder why they taken it out
Chevy - "we love chrome".
Hood release*
I was about to say, I own a Malibu and there isn’t an interior trunk release! Which is stupid...
YOUNG PEOPLE JUST DONT REALIZE THAT GM/CHEVY IS NOT THE CAR COMPANY IT ONCE WAS...;;--)),,,,,,,
Yo I been watching videos on 2018/2019 chevys for the past 2 hours and let me tell you.... you're so right :(
Although not the same car, I own a 2013 Buick Lacrosse premium, and I have nothing but good things to say about GM quality, at least Buick quality.
I guess if you want an American midsize sedan, it's this or nothing else from now on. No more Ford and no more FCA midsize sedans.
Mike Morales I really wish Chrysler would’ve kept the 200 and Dart. If they worked out some reliability issues, those would’ve sold a lot better
Well there is the Buick Regal, but that may or may not stick around for long.
Vincent D I forgot about that one
No way to change the radio stations from the steering wheel??!!..... Seriously?
On the back of the steering wheel like dodge products !!
