    I would never, ever, ever, FUCKING EVER allow my name to be attached to a referral without knowing that person. ESPECIALLY if I actually liked my job.

      Eh, I only work in fast food, but usually they don't link you to the person you referred (probably because fast food is just more casual)

      This info is vital period. Need to instill this in young people before they enter into college. You will go farther in life if you know the right people. If you have no connections, no matter how skilled you are, you won't go as far. You gotta have people believe in you, your talent, and potential

      Hey honestly you just need a good resume and be early when the job is posted. Referrals from strangers will not help because they can’t really vouch for you. Just get a referral from someone you actually know, not a stranger.

      @@idontevenknow9758 not even early. Just tap into the hidden job market. There’s more positions that aren’t even posted than the ones we see. They do that by design and yes it does exist. I would say get a referral for someone you know but someone you strike up a relationship with. But even if you just know somebody at the company, that gives you a leg up on the competition

    Some recruiting teams will do a courtesy interview when they receive a referral but most don’t. Even if you are qualified for the role there are no guarantees that you’ll get the job. Competition these days is tough as there so many layoffs happening. Wishing everyone much continued success!!

      @@daveisdead I saw the same thing happen back in 2008. I hired tenured guys that took a $30K-$40K salary reduction in order to stay employed. Wishing you much continued success!

      @@jc3209 Good resource for new grads is Angelist (they were recently acquired so not sure of their new name) but that's where I used to go to find more junior to mid-tier SE. Anglist is a platform for start-ups so there's lots of opportunities.

      Depends on the industry, many are thriving, but that won't stop companies from firing people to increase profits and expecting more from their current staff, but there are still more jobs than job seekers in the US economy atleast so finding a replacement job shouldn't take too long.

    Funny that she is standing in front of Google when she said this because my daughter got a job at Google due to a referral from a girl she was friends with in her college marching band. Still had to go through about 6 interviews. Her friend did get a $2,500 bonus when my daughter got hired.

    Funny thing is, I just started this awesome job because I went to the company's website and applied. Their talent acquisition person reached out and got me the interviews and moved things along. 😊

    I love you for sharing this with me. I have been dying at my current job because everyone there is very toxic and racist waiting to get out but in New York.       I was referred by a candidate at JPM and she worked with an old colleague of mine. In essence, “a friend of a friend”. I’m sure they knew about the connection but that was how I was able to get an interview. They didn’t ask but I didn’t get an offer either.

    Lol, I referred people as an intern in grad school, one got hired, got paid nearly 2 weeks salary for it (which is saying something when my internship was 10 weeks to begin with)

    I've done this. It makes a big difference. When I was an part-time English professor I always offered to give references to students who did well in my class. They got the job.

    I worry if I make a referral that whoever I speak up for will be a disaster. However, I have made referrals often in the past...it's just with people that I've known for some time.

    This is exactly why when I interview anyone, Referrals are at the very bottom on my list. I always assume referrals are friends and now paid for.
    They mean absolutely nothing to me, unless they are negative.

    I see a lot of issues potentially for the "referring" person. If they say they refer you, and you're a horrible employee, that person could be setting themselves up for trouble ⚠️

    I work as HR for different state in the US and Canada. This part only matter sometime however you need to understand the job portal the HR are look at. second the candidates are better preferred from the one company site. the best way to get a job is apply on the companies site, send and email to the official career email tell I applied for the job mention the job number and location. I have not heard back. now you become a priority. .

    keep in mind: Terms & Conditions of using site state that what they offer is a service by paid subscription, and that you will be paying the site for at least some of its services. FAQs and pre-sign-up info do not mention anything anywhere about what may cost you money.

    Even if that person is working there, how do you know if that person is performing their responsibilities effectively? Why would you want a referral from someone who isn't performing to high standards? As well intentioned this advice is, I'm not sure if I can get behind it. I've never had an issue obtaining employment without a job referral.

    The company I work for makes it ten times easier to get an interview, and most likely hired, if they know someone who already works there. They just need the person's name, job title, and location.

    I agree that a referral helps a lot and is beneficial for both parties, but I would never refer a stranger. Find someone you know that works there or get to know people there (i.e., networking). Referral bonuses can be significant, and everyone likes easy money, but I'm not recommending someone I don't know.

    I referred someone to my company and they refused to take 5 minutes of their time to fill out a paper that notified them that I referred this person. Yes they got the job and I didn't receive the bonus. 🙄

    I've never had to use references. And I've always got the job I wanted. If you know what you're doing, there's no reason for an employer to question your knowledge.

      Open positions in the current job market receive hundreds of applicants. Hiring managers have no idea who knows what they’re doing, and they take about 7 seconds to decide if a resume looks outstanding in some way.
      While referrals aren’t the only way to stand out to a hiring manager, they’re the most effective, statistically.

I have been told only a couple times that I am over qualified. However, just because I am over qualified, doesn't mean I don't deserve the job I am actively seeking.

    Actually, some companies might ask the referrer for specific qualifications about the referee. And if the referee doesn’t hit the benchmarks the company wants, the referral might be a hindrance and lead to auto-rejection over being of much help. I kind of had to learn this the hard way.

    I wouldnt say it's a secret, it's pretty well known, that said it's certainly worth reinforcing to, yes get a referrel if you can, otherwise applying is a bit pointless.

      Theres more jobs in the hidden job market than there is posted jobs. Internal candidates and referrals get dibs on these jobs and less competition. Applying online is like a blackhole. Doesn't take into account people who want to transition into a new role or industry entirely.

    You put out such good info. I was disappointed to hear you went out with guys multiple times a week for over a year to get free food. 😕
