Who is listening to this masterpiece in September 2024...there are no words to describe this exquisite musical composition...today is a special day in the history of Northern Ireland and this great song immediately came to mind...and the healing has begun...
I recall the day I brought the LP home on the day of it's release in Toronto. I played it over and over again. I'm 75 and have enjoyed Van's music since hearing Astral Weeks in September 1969 during my first year of residence at university. FTR, I have a fondness for Guinness and single malt Bushmills.
l have never heard a bad song from Van. His music makes me fall in love with the loves of my life all over again. I am 68 years old. He keeps my soul young. I wish everyone could feel what I feel whenever I listen to his music
I remember listening to "Enlightenment" over twenty eight years ago. I said to myself, 'Some day I'm gonna chop that wood, carry water'. Three years later I built a log cabin in the woods, I carry my own water and I chop wood. It's there that I hear that sound of One Hand Clapping.
It took me 30 years of misery to learn to love myself, this song reminds me to not beat myself up when im having a tough day, im still healing, I cant change the world. i cant change the people places or things in it. I can change myself. change how I feel, change how I act, and react. shine on you gorgeous people Be proud of yourself radiate bliss.xx
Hey Al, good to hear from ya. You summed it all up there bro. Half of all the battles in life are against yourself, if you can get past that, you can be your best self. And when you have songwriters like Van the Man, you will never be alone on your journey, peace my brother.
Figuring ourselves out is like reading a great novel but we don’t know how it’s going to end, just that there’s twists and turns and ups and downs and more and more healing and strength and finally acceptance of ourselves. It’s terrifying but wonderful all at once.
the guitars, the piano, the hammond organ, the drums, the violins.......the violins, the violins and the genius....i wish it could experience it live...

that's the truth Van has that blues going on , always knows how to express him self . love this , very low key. and beautiful ,especially someone like you.
Van the Man....what else can you say. First heard him when he was with Them, I was just 12 or 13and he and he/they blew my mind. And he hasn't stopped yet, probably never will.
One of the multiple masterpieces Van has given us - he never fails to lift my mood & his music always leaves me feeling I've been in the presence of greatness 'I can't stand myself'

Truly a heart breaker & healer in one. Tears flow, as the 'soul touches' come in wave after wave, the violin cresendo's peaking another wave, the organ raising me up higher and higher, if god meant for us to draw near and nigh to him through music, he sent us Van Morrison to take us to heavenly places. Thank you Van, you may never know and understand your gifts, but in those immortal words: "a man shall be known by his works"... As you are known to me
Ah The Man. With the wee short legs. And a love for God and sweet things. Loved how he so exuberantly kicked his legs up in The Last Waltz. His performance there was magnificent. Cypress Avenue. A line from L’etranger, Camus wot a guy too. Footballer or Baller as Amy W would say and one of the best French writers ever! After Emile Zola why, bien entendue. That line - les lignes de Cypres…. I think that’s just about right. I’ll put on my Easter bonnet boy.
This song is amazing. Me and Catherine used to listen to Van all the time while smoking topless on every Greek beach we could find. Became expert at lighting cigarettes in gale force winds under sarongs, using each other’s hands, etc. Then she’d divert to Bowie and I’d go find Bob.
This has to be Van Morrisons best song ever. Strangely I only just discovered it. I used to think Into The Mystic was best but this one just gets me right in my soul. Beautiful song 😊
Bass and drums on this are great. Some lovely fills from both. Holding it all in place. Sweet song. Van's vocal, as ever, expressive and evocative as only he can do.
Technical critique? Why? I don't search for a mathematically harmonious series of notes, virtuoso playing, or the perfect voice - I search for feeling. This song of Van's is music at it's heart wrenching, stomach tightening, tear wrenching, best. It brings tears to my eyes when I sing along. Not many songs do that. I hope that you felt it as well.
