The original bootleg with "Caledonia Soul Music" "VAN THE MAN Recorded 1970/71, New York/San Francisco In 1970 Van Morrison was hot property when Moondance, his second album for Warners, became an FM radio staple. But the improvisational, elongated song form that defined Morrison’s Warners debut, Astral Weeks, still held a deep fascination. Add his esoteric belief in the ancient kingdom of Caledonia (a landmass combining Scandinavia and Scotland/Northern Ireland) as the birthplace of the blues and the epic, largely instrumental, 18-minute musical voyage “Caledonia Soul Music” was the result. Recorded during sessions for His Band And The Street Choir, a tape of the track was passed to and played several times on San Francisco KSAN radio station but left off the album. Morrison later admitted Street Choir was “a compromise… I lost control of it.” The track was released here with a live version of “Moondance” from the Fillmore West in 1970, and a 1971 Pacific High Studios radio broadcast that included a rare outing for the Them track “Friday’s Child”, a combative “Hound Dog” and a caustic, seven-minute deconstruction of Dylan’s “Just Like A Woman”. I bought a pressing of this album - Van the Man - in Kingston, Ontario back around 1973-74. Caledonia Soul Music was certainly the highlight of the album, though Side 1 offered a hidden treasure in that it was a quality Ray Charles album (don't remember which now). No problems with Brother Ray, but I was looking forward to the 'original' Side 1.
TB Sheets is one of my all time favorites. Very talented songwriter and a great soul man. Underrated in this century. Wild night always makes me want to out and do something on a Saturday night.

I Picked this up MANY years back from a contact in Germany, a van the man addict. He sent me loads of VM info and a couple of snippets from various albums. I asked my local radio DJ about it, he was not very impressed and could only guess at its origins. I guess just like ALL music, what some of us think is wounderful, others would sooner listen to white noise. I have to say that this particular recording/stream is not of the highest quality, so it doesn't stand up to much amplification. Yet its all there, so play it low Vol and if you like it and you can find it to buy, i don't think you will regret it. There is soul in this music, not just VMs but mine too when i listen to it. IT's B..r..i...l...l...i..a..n..t !!!
What I don't understand is whay is it not possible to buy this masterpiece in a good quality. This piece is for me more worth than the mona lisa in paris
Because it is a "bootleg", right? I have had dozens of Van's boots over the years, when someone brings a tape device into the gig, you don't always get a pristine, polished result. But you do get this...
This is what I call music, the master Van at work, no other can do it like Mr V Morrisan can, the next time I meet God and Jesus I will ask them to arrange to plant some golden wings on this man back and I know that I will not be asking for too much.
Might be Ronnie Montrose on mandolin. He was in the band that played at Pacific High Recorders in SF for a small audience (broadcast on FM radio in 1971). The band included Van - guitar, harmonica, vocal; Ronnie Montrose - electric and acoustic guitars, mandolin; Mark Jordan - piano, organ; Bill Church - bass;Bill Atwood - trumpet, trombone; Jack Schroer - soprano, alto, and baritone saxophones, piano; Rick Shlosser - drums, percussion; Ellen Schroer - vocals; Janet Morrison - vocals.
AllMusic Review by J.P. Ollio Van Morrison's live concert at the Pacific High Studio in 1971 has turned up on numerous bootlegs, most notably the Van the Man LP. The two-disc Into the Mystic boasts clear sound, a killer set list, and one essential bonus track. Always an erratic live performer, Morrison appears relaxed on this set, belting out early R&B classics and songs from his initial Warner Brothers records. A cover of "Hound Dog" opens with Morrison reciting the lyrics to "Que Sera Sera." Later, he introduces Dylan's "Just Like a Woman" as "a rendition of somebody else's tune." The concert's apex is a riveting performance of Them's "Friday's Child" -- piano and guitar build to a crescendo at each refrain while the rhythm section pounds away. The CD's final cut is a long instrumental piece entitled "Caledonia Soul Music." An outtake from the His Band and Street Choir sessions, this winding 16-minute track may be reason enough to seek out this disc, a truly transcendent recording. Fans of Morrison should put Into the Mystic at the top of their wish lists.
i have listened to this about 300 times now , van morrison greatest hits was my very first piece of music i bought with my own money when I was 11 yrs old along with bartman the simpsons album , anyways van morrison is a god in my opinion still after all these yrs he still holds true as one of the best in music like at the fucking tippity top of the list this dude is soul quenching life purpose ease of the pain move your fucking ass music! if this doesn't move you your dead inside

Wow thank you Robert! So happy to hear this. Never lets me down that Van the Man. I just got back in August from Ireland where I was able to see- hear - feel Van live in concert at the Seamus Heaney Home Place! that is how much I love - not like this about anyone else - been a lifelong thing.
I heard that was an amazing show. I was too slow to get tickets, but I'll be seeing Van again in Belfast on New Years Eve at the Stormont hotel. Got a front row table at a Dinner & Show.
Man, thanks for posting this and giving a little explanation. It's such a mellow groove. I put it on when I need to relax. But Van sounds really positive here and I think he's really encouraging his band in his own special gifted way. Just love his music, my fav artist because I love old school R&B mixed with his own background etc. Love when he says on this recording , "let's get some horns" and then immediately says to the horn player{ Brother Jack?} "you got it" . That's cool, thanks Bro, much appreciated
Thank you Robert for adding yet another fine work from our Van. Nobody finer, regardless of the season, emotions, time of say... all will be well. Hugs to you, Robert

Whoa...great musician.. Rare ..this is a gem
6.45 aw! Van is in to the music. That's what I love about Van Morrison he is the music
Oh my gosh! I am in love! What soul and sensitivity
Susan Bryant 50 minutes after you I discover this song in another part of the world and feel the same
What I don't understand is whay is it not possible to buy this masterpiece in a good quality. This piece is for me more worth than the mona lisa in paris
Because it is a "bootleg", right? I have had dozens of Van's boots over the years, when someone brings a tape device into the gig, you don't always get a pristine, polished result. But you do get this...
this is the greatest i have ever heard.music fot my soul

I just can't get enough of Van, so many songs I love to hear. pure Genius
Ollio
Van Morrison's live concert at the Pacific High Studio in 1971 has turned up on numerous bootlegs, most notably the Van the Man LP.
If this is from the Street Choir sessions, then it's John Platania on mandolin. Van calls out his name at 6 minutes in.
the acoustic guitar solos, are they Van or Ronnie Montrose's?
Love details thankyou

Wow thank you Robert! So happy to hear this. Never lets me down that Van the Man. I just got back in August from Ireland where I was able to see- hear - feel Van live in concert at the Seamus Heaney Home Place! that is how much I love - not like this about anyone else - been a lifelong thing.
I heard that was an amazing show. I was too slow to get tickets, but I'll be seeing Van again in Belfast on New Years Eve at the Stormont hotel. Got a front row table at a Dinner & Show.
@@themightyfavog_15801 That is awesome. Enjoy! 💚🍀😊
This never gets old
