@@g-bruk8887 about 200 dollars American, if 200 dollars will keep disposable safety razors made of plastic out of the landfills then it’s well worth the price. The problem in America is young men here grow up with safety razors and are entirely unfamiliar with straight razors for the last 100 years. So there would be the teaching curve of learning the old way to shave again. But well worth the cost.
As a barber 43 years, I have to say Japanese shears, razors and steel implements are by far the best in the world. I've tried all kinds. The Japanese beat German Solingen steel in the 80's by a mile and never looked back. All my steel tools are Japanese. Thank you. They literally become extensions of my hands.
i share your observations. I own a 60mm razor and they are wonderful instruments
You can't compare mass produced quality with traditional craftsmanship that turned a piece of metal into art at the end of the process
I saw a documentary where a traditional stone cutter said chisels made by an experienced blacksmith beat commercially made tools any day. That would suggest that traditional methods of fabrication hold a secret that mass-produced items can't match. This is where Japanese excel: They know the value of, and maintain tradition.

Technology is incorporated in techniques they use. It us simply not recent technology.
Simply not true, technology could definitely be developed to make these just as good and far more efficiently - but there is an inherently human joy in hard work and skill development, and that’s why people appreciate things like this.

I am always in awe whenever I watch a good blacksmith. Their products come from their hearts & souls. Steel so good, it can almost shave dust.

こ、これは……欲しい！ 剃刀とは言いつつも日本刀のような風格すら感じる。
しかし、わしのようなズボラな人間はすぐに錆びさせてしまいそうで怖いな。きちんと管理できればそれこそ一生モノなんだろうけど、ちゃんと管理ができる人向けかな。それに、最初は顎を血だらけにしてしまいそうだ。それにしてもお弟子さん、２３歳で既に立派な職人の風格だな。こういう若者は頼もしい。

I own a 60mm Iwasaki from this forge and its wonderful to see who and how they make them. They are incredible shaving instruments. regards dapper shaves (Mr Straight Razor)

When i saw the final test..damn! Thats sharp! Hope the trainee could further grow the business. People now does not know that old school razors are mor3 economical than disposable ones..you can just buy one in your lifetime and just sharpen it with a leather belt. Cheers from philippines! Most impressive! As an American, our mass production really undermines the craftsmanship required in ages past. It's so easy to just go to the store and buy a "razor", but once I saw the labor, skill, and time involved in this video, it gives me a much greater appreciation for the small things I usually take for granted. If only everything in life took this discipline to master, I feel people would appreciate the little things that much more. Always a fan of a tradesmen taking pride in their work. The everyday "Mundane" has much more depth, sweat, and passion than we'll ever truly comprehend.
Considering the $400 and up cost for the razor plus the required items to get it sharp plus the shave soap and shave brush I've learned to appreciate Bic single blade disposables. Actually I shave with a mass produced straight razor. It's a better shave than anything else I've used. You mentioned appreciation. If I hade a razor from a blade smith like the gentleman in the video I would love getting up in the morning and might like the man in the mirror more than I usually do.
@@bozzskaggs112 To be fair, you can buy a good razor for $200 and have it honed for less than $50 plus a few ancillaries for another $50, and you never have to spend that $200 again. In the long run, the long run mind you, a good straight razor will save a lot of money over a cartridge razor.
If you are patient, you can buy a really good used one off fleabay for $25 delivered, and save $175 off the above prices. But, each to their own. As long as you're getting a shave that's sufficient for your purposes, that's all that matters.
Love the whole process. How long from start to finish for one razor? How many do they make in a day? These must cost a fortune in order for both of them to make a living. Well worth it I'm sure.

Forjar o ferro no fogo para moldá-lo ainda serve para filosofarmos um pouco sobre nós mesmos, quão duros e brutos somos até a perfeição do corte.
E, por fim, os artesãos trabalham concorrendo com uma produção esmagadora de barbeadores, ainda assim, confiam no produto que fabricam, e sabem que têm um espaço garantido no mercado das lâminas.

“Paste” is the word you’re looking for. Pasta is spaghetti. It is made from clay. My understanding is most smiths make it themselves but there are commercial suppliers. Companies that sell knife making supplies would be the logical place to start.

of course the craftsmanship of just about anything engineered is almost always sub standard if it aint Japanese...sure glad the old master has an apprentice and my hats off to the new guy. Theyre both fun to watch working.

@@VolodiaLukianov ну тут да. Ппосто я еще исхожу из целесообразности. За годы на Gillette потратишь намного больше чем купить один раз опаску и к ней камни и ремень для правки. Можно и один ремень, а точить носить мастерам. Ну и само бритье опаской и т-бритвой намного чище и приятнее.

I didn't understand why the quenching had to be done in the dark, but then I realized it's to better see the color (the temperature) of the metal to know when it's ready to quench

Looks more like one of the more machinable tool steel alloys. Spring steel is very hard to machine indeed.
The actual steel on the cutting edge is likely one of the Hitachi steels labeled as white paper or blue paper. There’s tons of information on the internet about these commonly available steels if you’re interested.

This is a barber's razor that glides over the skin and cuts smoothly.
Most stainless won't get sharp enough or hold an edge. This blade is a combination of two steels, one that is hard to get sharp and hold an edge and one to form the handle and backing.
