At the classical academy in Florence, Italy, I learned how to use Nitram Charcoal. I could sharpen the sticks of different grades the B, HB and H, giving the necessary range to a fully develop drawing. Recently Nitram Charcoal came up with a Liquid Charcoal that I found useful for this charcoal drawing.

I am an aspiring caricaturist and I am studying and following your videos and learning tons that I have been applying to my drawing process. Thanks for sharing your gifts. Your ability to capture a likeness is what I am at awe of I watch your process and the way you hold your drawing pencil and just trying that helped me see proportions better.

Great video. I love the tip of using the sanding block. Thank you..

Cesar draws so directly, no indecision no halting steps. I imagine Sargent would have a similar approach based on looking at drawings from both artists. The ability to refine to any desired degree gives a lot of freedom to choose their desired approach. Cool video

I like that momentvar 2:26 when you put a smile on her face. With just a few marks she changed from worried to hapoy. Shows just how much pwer art has.

I can see how Sargent has influenced your style in this one, specifically right before the liquid charcoal step, in the hard lines of her clothing and shoulder facing the light, while her face looks so real she breathes. I didn’t know about the sanding block technique, but it makes sense and I can’t wait to try it and see the result. Thanks for the lesson, she’s beautiful. Peace.

Kev Quaid excellent observation. Agree there is an homage to Sargent in this one I think too. BTW there is a paperback book of Sargent drawings that is available, inexpensive and well worth it if you’re interested. I got it off Amazon

This is fantastic I've been looking into the liquid charcoal. I've been using a mix of charcoal powder and acetone to create a 'paint' for my charcoal drawings

Corona Vitae check out Cesar’s sketchbook vlogs. He does one where he shows work from when he is in high school. The cover of that book has a self portrait taken from a driver license photo, that should help you find the right vlog. Anyway, the point is his work in high school was no better than most teenagers. He simply put in a ton of effort and learned excellent technique as well as studied and made copies of master works.
I am sure you can achieve similar level of proficiency given commitment and practice. Good luck , cheers

Another great video! Could you talk more about using a sanding block? How does this compare to a stump or tortillon? Can you lift out highlights with an eraser in an area you have sanded?

Cesar, if you are ever able to make it to Milwaukee after all this is over, you should check out the Milwaukee art museum! It's a really cool-looking building and there's some nice art there too for inspiration.

Lu Vill it seems more like a gauche. Only seen one person use Russian sauce before (in Landscape artist of the Year) to me it seems like that.
