We're adding a gorgeous Tundra to the hoard today, which leads us into a discussion about dual lands as a staple investment in MTG collectible space. Are they really a good idea? What about the printruns of Revised?

@@AlphaHoarder I think that they really were upto about a year or two ago, I have seen the prices come up a lot lately and I think people are starting to realize and recognize the rarity. Maybe there has been a boom of commander in europe, which could play a roll? Even the FWB has become par with revised, when 2 years ago they were way way cheaper.
Those Alpha and Beta duals are insanely beautiful. All I have is a lowly set of revised duals, but someday I’ll go for some black bordered. What do you think about FBB?
Nothing lowly about Revised! I think FBB has potential appeal to players, but it is probably bounded on the upside potential by Revised Edition duals. I don’t personally have a position in them.
Revised dual land prices seem to be an overall great indicator for the health of the reserved list; whether bull or bear market.

I think revised also hits the spot for many as it is a perfect for new investors. As you mentioned they are pretty liquid, collectors and players want them and most people do not enter the MtG finance world and buy Alpha ( even if I regret that now ).
My first finished collector goal was a 9.5 set of revised duals. There I am not this sure if I would do that again as I have some spare ones which are, at least currently, not this easy to move.
I think an interesting video would be "I wish I knew x and y when I started" as I regret fe not being focused on what I really want and my "identity" in the space changed throughout the years. From player to collector/investor, flipper, P3k lover
That's a good point about it being an entry vehicle for new MTG investors, I agree. It means the investor pool is even bigger than in more specialized niches of magic (p3k, eh??). And oh man, that 9.5 set of duals must be nice!!

I understand you think revised has a ceiling in price, I also understand 350k copies aren't nearly as rare compared to alpha, beta, and unlimited. Do you think blue duals might hit 1500 dollars in the future, especially where the power of the dollar decreases by chance?
I don't think there's anything that disqualifies that as a possibility. It would depend on a number of other factors, though… The main one being the size of the hobby, the legality of dual lands, and any shenanigans that Hasbro get up to around reprints. I don't think the 30th anniversary edition had a material impact on the inventory of dual lands, so that's good, and they seem unlikely to repeat something like that. But yes, in principle, highly playable cards, and a growing player base will create a few cards that are disproportionately valued, even compared to their rarity.

what is a "better" investment, light/heavy played duallands revision or the basic lands in great condition from arabian night? Its almost the same prices
As you can imagine, there aren’t clear answers to this kind of thing. The dual lands will probably have a higher liquidity, more on the LP side than the HP side. The Arabian nights card is much more rare especially in good condition, and more appealing to collectors, but will thus have a lower liquidity. It depends on your outlook on the health of the game, long-term, your perception of the split between players and collectors, and how long you’re looking to hold the card.

I would like to make a point to think about. You mention the lower print run of volcanic Island because it was not in alpha BUT what do you think of original art Plataue as it has a FAR smaller total print run than any other duel including volcanic Island as volcanic is missing 1000 copies where original art Plataue is missing 300,000 copies. This would indicate to me that Plataue being one of the cheapest duels while at the same time being the rarest it is FAR under valued. Food for thought
That is some food for thought 🤔 it gets complicated because it picks apart the players from the collectors, as only one of those groups is really going to care about the art, where as the other will value uniqueness in a different way. I’ll have to ponder this!

That 40M figure must be mostly people that played with their friends at home once or something, not really people looking for dual lands.
I know, the blank spot in my binder is driving me nuts…! But at 9-12k for a clean copy, it’s a tough pickup 😬😬. As for the 40m, I’m not sure how they calculated it. It’s a couple years old, too.
@@AlphaHoarder About that figure, in some sense it's like saying that because X million people drive cars they will all want to have a certain luxury car, or some specific kind of car that may be generally seen as most desirable. Most people don't care.

The viability of dual lands in play doesn't justify their cost, which is why it's very likely that only < 1% will use them. In addition, you reasonably should never bring one to a public game. These either are, or will be first and foremost like coin collecting. Nobody collects coins to use them for their originally intended purpose, but the anomaly exists. I'll absolutely spend $2 for one of these from a shady website. I can understand why others would despise me for owning fakes, but I'm not going to spend tens of thousands of dollars to make people happy. Additionally, I disagree that duals can't be manipulated. There may be a large number of them, but not many are actually for sale and it's very highly likely that 1% of people who have duals own 99% of them, making their scarcity purely artificial. They exist largely as nest eggs for collectors, most of which will only resurface during estate sales.
Good points. I suppose it’s all relative. Dual lands have some of the highest liquidity, so comparatively speaking, I’d argue they’re safer from manipulation. But as you point out, that’s not the same as saying they can’t be manipulated.

It was yummy, but it could have used more ice. I’d be interested to hear your take on the whole situation. I’ve certainly been wrong about a lot of things before, so always interested to hear others’ input.
I’ll be honest, I left my comment within the first minute of the video😂. After coming back and watching, you gave a great argument and I definitely think you’re right! I’m just such a conservative collector that I typically don’t think about buying anything at a high price to resell, vs just buying to collect what I love (which ‘justifies’ the price to me when it’s in my personal collection). I think about other hobbies and collectibles that went down in value after the demographic got old and died out, and would rather enjoy my own collection vs be left holding a bag to potentially sell, which I think could be a lot of people buying cards to resell.

The calculus on that changed a lot since this video, with the magic 30 stuff. However, they do remain the most liquid item in magic, and at a very strong intersection between players and collectors. I try not to make specific investment recommendations, but assuming you’re comfortable with the risk and the speculative nature of collectibles, I would say, these are one of the lower risk items in the hobby.

Hi, i Was thinking lately to’ buy a dual land, i played magic when i was little and i re started playing with the pandemic . I am 22 years old so cant have a lot of budget. Wich one you recommend to me? Wich is a good investment but without paying a house for it? Thank You!!
Well, one thing I'll say first is that collectibles are incredibly speculative, and really should not be your first or primary investment vehicle. You mentioned being young and not having a big budget, so I wanted to put that out there first. If you've got some money to invest, and you don't have traditional investments, I would look there first. But assuming you have that sorted and you're looking to diversify: an MP - LP revised edition dual land is probably the most liquid and least speculative of the cards in magic. If you want something that's a little bit more on the collectible side and slightly less liquid, Unlimited is still in a really good place. The specific dual doesn't matter so much, they are all in demand, so you can kind of choose the price range that fits your budget. You'll tend to get more growth on NM cards due to ever increasing historical scarcity, but again, you're trading that for liquidity. Hopefully those thoughts are helpful 🙂

Buying local has lots of benefits, but you are right it tends to be more expensive. If you are in the USA look for eBay's authenticity guarantee, that should cover you. Otherwise, TCGPlayer or Cardmarket both show seller reputation so you can deal with reputable people. Avoid private transactions and trades until you are comfortable authenticating the cards yourself.

If you can time the market effectively, good on ya! For me, this is a position I build from cashflow as part of my investment portfolio. I def try to buy cards I feel are underpriced.
The key part after getting the duals, is keeping them until retirement time. They will always go up. Never be reprinted. Hold 'em even revised duals!
Time makes fools of us all, lol. Although it still can be said that liquidity remains excellent. I’d have to check if duals are underperforming the rest of the market post m30, but my suspicion is, outside of Revised, they aren’t. The fact that m30 duals are holding high values suggests sentiment, rather than a supply shift, is the current driving factor. Unless the game dies, sentiment recovers, usually.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm not sure I'd call it an outright scam, but when you start getting into the premiums of 10 over 9.5… It has very little to do with the actual card.
