  • I purchased a new machine for the shop, a Dake 15 ton arbor press. To save on shipping I had it sent to the Mobile terminal so I went over to pick it up, then get it unloaded and into the shop.

Hi, Adam. I’m an older guy who’s had his career, mostly in marketing, and I am fascinated with your channel. I know NOTHING about metal working, the machinery and devices you use. The closest I ever got to a milling machine was when, as a young man, I lived in Cincinnati. I was in Cincinnati Milling Machine and LeBlond many times with my work. Yet I am so impressed with the accuracy of your work and how fluent you need to be in math and so many other disciplines that affect your doing a good job for your customers. I love to see you working in a safe environment with all of the safety procedures, and habits, you have in place. I never see you rush. And I love how you take pride in your shop. It’s got to be, inherently, a dirtier place to work with all of the chips and lubricants. But your shop, and equipment, are always clean and tidy. The thing that I admire about you the most is that you do your best not to talk down to folks like me. You take the time to show and explain what you’re going to do and how you’re going to do it. I think that’s what makes your channel so appealing. I wish you continued success with your business and your channel and thank you for providing information to young men and women who might be interested in getting in this line of work. You’re a great camera operator too!!!
    Best,
    Ted Hoff

That is a Dake #4 12 ton arbor press. Not a #5 15 ton. The 15 ton has a swing out table and not a raising knee table. The 401 cast into the main casting also shows it's not the 15 ton Dake #5. A very nice press nonetheless though! What a great piece.

  • @jlucasound

I also noticed that aside from the great strapping job, the press was placed just in front of the trailer axle. Very important.
The axle and the tongue share the weight. (Not equally; more for the axle, but just forward lets the tongue handle some of the load). That is ideal for stability, as well as weight distribution. You don't want your trailer weaving (too far back) or your vehicle rear end pushed too low (too far forward). (This is just for anyone who didn't know; I know most of you do and I know Adam does!) :-)

Dang Adam, you one upped me! I bought a Greenerd #4 from Washington state (I reside in Texas) and was so excited I got it for $264 off ebay. Cost me $248 to get it close to home. In my haste, I failed to notice it was stored outside (Did I mention Washington and the rain they get there) for 30 years outside a wood mill. It was all locked up and a "project". Lots of love (hammering) and oil got it freed up and working properly. I used an engine hoist to unload and move it. While you more than doubled my press capacity, going to have to start a new search. Ironically, I am near Dallas, so I should go visit Andrew and his stuff. Love your videos but you are costing me a fortune in tooling for things I know not how to use. When asked by foolish visitors what purpose it serves, I have thus far crushed a coke can, cracked a walnut and done some minor motorcycle stuff. Yep, multi-purpse tool for sure. Just need to find a hip holster to allow me to carry about town!

  • @SupraSmart68
    @SupraSmart68 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I like the way the press was so thoughtfully protected during yard storage and at the point of dispatch with a readily available plastic bag or bin liner that machinery often comes in from the factory, should it happen to rain or become damp or humid. That reminds me; I've been soaking a pair of engine mounts for a month in Evapo-Rust TM and it only takes a day to work its magic. I wouldn't even know about it unless Adam had featured it in some of his videos, so thanks again big buddy!
(This comment was not sponsored by Evapo-Rust TM but you can never have too much of a good thing, hint, hint ;-)

Throw some rags in the catch can so if drop a broach or shaft it makes a soft landing. I bet the 1.5-15 pin length is just right pull from one side and stick in from the other. Great score. Just the right size for you.

One thing you could add that would make loading and unloading your trailer is a pair of jack's at the rear end of it. Added to the jack on the tounge, you can eliminate the bounce and sway when you're loading or unloading. I've done it on several trailers in the past, and it really helps. Just a suggestion....

Adam. take measurements of the INSIDE of that bottom "catcher." Then go to a local restaurant supply store and look for something called a Bain-Marie. It's a stainless steel cup (various sizes) that may fit in that catcher. They are not expensive and may serve you better than the catcher for collecting the cutting oil and chips. Good score. New. I've never seen a big arbor press that wasn't 50 years old and half beat to death.
The catch basket on the big arbor presses I've seen were usually lined with rag waste to protect shafts and broaches as they fell away from whatever they were pressed out of. And catch chips etc.

I have been having a look around at stuff on that press and everything that I can find is saying that its a 12 ton one. The "catch can" (from what i can tell) can have a pad in the base and is used for catching things like broaching tools with a soft impact, the part name is a mandrel catcher. The short sliding pin that is used for dropping the tonnage down is 1" x 6 - 1/4" according to the modern equivalent parts list and has a snap ring in a groove to stop it going too far in.

BTW. Awesome Arbor. That is a beast! You will, I'm sure, be using that a lot. Congrats Mr. and Mrs. Booth!! :-3 That kiss was for Abbie. :-)

Adam, on the one I used, I seem to remember there was only one pin going in from the right. Also, the big "ships wheel" was really nice. A lot of light duty tasks could be done with it alone.

Looks like the catch can on the bottom is to catch heavy pins or whatever you are pressing out so they don’t fall over on your feet

I hate working in the rain, you get it cleaned up and it will be a great addition to the shop

Real nice press Adam. A little cleanup and good as new, hard to find equipment that has not been beat to death so you got lucky there and good find on the parallels, another shop item that when you need them you really need them.

I have a Famco 3C arbor press in my shop. It has the ratcheting handle. It’s amazing the force you can apply with the leverage from that very simple tool. Mine came on the original stand. Sold for next to nothing at the tool and die shop auction where I purchased it.
Good vid Adam. You look very happy these days. New job and beautiful new wife. That kind of Happiness means low blood pressure and just healthier stress free living. Happy for you dude.

Dake also sell parts. You could get a handwheel from them. Their model 5 uses handwheel part number 294.

Adam, you made me a little nervous while you were unloading that arbor press. You might consider putting a couple of jacks under the trailer to help keep it from rocking around.

So, So, So glad the thing didn't tip over during unloading, I have to admit I watched this video with my hands over my eyes like a horror flick! An I think Dake should send you a replacement handle as a thank you for saving one of their presses from the scrap heap!
