    The reason that the insta worthy rooms are glorified is because they're a fantasy. The room you showed with the mess is the reality. It shows the overconsumption for what it really is, hence people don't like it.

    It's wild to think people have whole rooms dedicated to collecting/hoarding any item, but especially things that are meant to be used, and expire!
    Imagine how much extra in rent or a mortage you'd be paying over your lifetime if you needed a whole extra room for makeup, or any other product

    This was a well-rounded look at the issue. There's a line between collecting and hoarding. I think a collection is a curation of items that are relevant to you. Hoarding goes above and beyond that.

    I did a swedish death cleaning a year ago, it took 3 months. I now own 26 items of makeup, 50 pcs. of clothing, 5 pr. of shoes. The whole house and everything in it was purged. I've never been happier. I really feel sick when I see vanities overflowing with things that could be put to good use instead of sitting there slowly expiring. Loved your video:)

    I used to have a lot more makeup than I do now. For me, I used buying makeup as a therapy. I would use it a few times and want the next thing. All of the TH-camrs I used to watch continue to encourage this type of behavior and now I can't watch them. I never had that much though. That's completely insane!!

    Videos like this remind me why I work to keep my shopping in check. I'm disabled and on a tight budget and have to be very mindful of what cosmetics I buy and how much I keep. I love lippies and nail polish and do have more than just a few of each, but I don't hoard. It takes work to not give in to the voice in the back of my head that says, "This lipstick will fill that little void inside." The work is worth it. An entire room full of makeup I can't use would overwhelm me, even if I organized it (and I do organize my makeup collection as I love playing with my label maker). Anyway, thanks for this. It's helpful to me.

    • @AimeeRebecca

      I still get that little voice too! Not to mention the big, loud voices of brands, influencers, and ads that are also telling us day in and day out that the next purchase will fill that void. You're right - it takes work but it's worth it! ☺️

    I think we can all have too much 'stuff'. When my mum died and I had to clear out her house, with 5 (yes! Five!!) Wardrobes full of clothes, I decided to start on my own 'stuff'. The only way I could make a decision on my clothes the first time, was to take everything out of the wardrobe, tried it on, what it went with, made an outfit with shoes and bag, Where can I wear it? Do I love it? If it was Yes, it got hung as an 'outfit' in my wardrobe, if it was No, it went in the OUT pile. I had 4 big black garbage bags full and took them straight to Vinnies!! Gone!! I finally could buy a couple of new seasons things, 5yrs later, I have done it again, and did what another TH-camr suggested, had a maybe pile on the spare bed, if I was looking for that item, it went back in the wardrobe, in 6 mths, if they were still on the spare bed, I took 2 more big bin bags to Vinnies. It's better to have a bit less and love it all, than Lots of clothes, overwhelmed and hate them!!! Then I started on the rest of the house and gave boxes of kitchen items, etc away!

    I saw that video with the lipstick organization and I read the comments. You didn't mention how much hate and ridicule she got that was criticizing how she spends her money and her misplaced priorities. I love mindful consumption for you but we have to let others live by their own path. The trick is when you choose your own path that feels right to you, not let someone else choose it for you.

    • @AimeeRebecca
      @AimeeRebecca  วันที่ผ่านมา

      Most of the negative comments I saw on her video were about her having an 'addiction' and that's not something I could possibly comment on because I don't know her. For all I know, she didn't pay for a single one of those lipsticks and got them sent in PR so I can't even suggest that she's wasting her money. That's why I say it's not about the individual person - it's about the general attitude towards overconsumption.

    I think some of these influencers with massive make up or skincare collections make a lot of money from unboxing, hauls etc. So they continue to do it as the income covers the cost of what they spend. But then viewers who don’t have a social media platform start to think owning all this stuff is normal/ aspirational and buy more and more to emulate the influencers who promote over consumption. Same with Primark hauls - people buying multiple bags of clothes and showing them off on their channels, month after month. No one needs so much stuff in one go.

    The issue I have is that you find your "holy grail" product - foundation, lipstick, eyeshadow palette - that works with your makeup routine and then the bloody thing gets discontinued. Usually after you've splurged for the "refillable" version. Then you have to try new products until you find the replacement...which gets discontinued. Is it just me this happens to?

    Many of the people who have a huge amount of makeup are beauty "influencers". Cosmetic companies send Influencers large amounts of makeup with the hopes that the Influencers will talk about how great their products are. I think the PR needs to stop. I wonder how much the price of makeup would go down if companies stopped sending so much to Influencers. None of it is free. Someone has to pay for the makeup that is sent to Influencers, and it's the consumers. I'm tired of it.

    I think it depends on how you view makeup. I mean, how many craft supplies do you need as a Crafter? How many makeup products do you need for doing your makeup? If it is your hobby, and you don't view it as food, just something consumable, it's not strange to have a lot. No, you don't *need* it. But it's a hobby. It's fun.
    Now, if it is something you just enjoy doing sometimes, and you're just in it for doing a look here and there, or go with the same look every day, you're not going to be drawn to this kind of hoarding. It just depends on your view on it. For me it's a hobby, but since it does expire at some point, I like to make a point of using things up and use up more than I bring in right now (I have a lot). It also takes space, and of you're in a different situation, if you're having a baby or something, that might change how you want to occupy your space with any hobby...
    Just food for thought. ☺️

    • @AimeeRebecca
      @AimeeRebecca  วันที่ผ่านมา

      I totally agree that some people find more joy in certain things than others and if something is a passion, you're going to want to buy more of it. The problem with makeup is that it expires so having an excessive amount doesn't make sense. I've thrown out hundreds (maybe thousands - I daren't stop to think about it 🙈) of pounds worth of cosmetics over the last couple of years. But they key is just not letting it get so far out of control that you can't use it all. I didn't regulate my purchases at all and that was my mistake.

      @ I agree 1,000,000% I’m not perfect. The best example that I can think of doesn’t have anything to do with make up but my mother passed away in November 2023 at age 92. Somebody suggested I keep all of her clothes and shoes. And I just looked at them like why would I do that? She wore a size 7 shoe I wear a size 10 and I am much taller than her and her clothes would not fit me. So I asked why they thought I should keep them. And their answer and I know it was coming from a good place, that I should keep them for the memories
      Needless to say, I did not keep any of her shoes, or her clothes. I donated them. If I kept them all, I’d have to build another closet or not sell anything of hers. Keep my condo upstairs and not sell it and just have it be one big giant walk-in closet
      No thank you they all went bye-bye

    Makeup has never been that huge an issue for me, but at one point I had 47 different kinds of tea. I have thrown away more bath products, body butters, and lotions than I can count because unopened containers went rancid before I could even use them. At some point you need to really evaluate what you actually use. When I see the makeup rooms and the really large collections (regardless of how well they are organized) I always wonder how old some of the products are and how many of them are expired.

      It's surprising how these things can creep up on you. One purchase here, another there and the next thing you know, it's out of control.

    But you are judging and telling your viewers what to do. I’m
    a Vegan but I don’t tell other people they should be one too. My beliefs about animals are my beliefs

      If you went vegan and it improved various aspects of your life in big and meaningful ways, I would encourage you to share how it could help other people too. My life has improved dramatically since changing my relationship with consuming meaningless products (and that's without even touching on the environmental and humanitarian impacts) and I'm glad my eyes were opened to it so I could make that change. I'm just offering an alternative viewpoint to the narrative that's consistently pushed online so people can make their own informed decisions ☺️

      To me there’s a difference between sharing and criticising other people’s choices/ being judgemental.
      Personally, I don’t have “meaningless things” in my life, yes they are just objects but I’m grateful for these things and the ability to be able go out and purchase the things I want/ need and they do add value in my life in the regard I use and appreciate them. To me there’s an element of “shaming” in this video.

      I think this is a behavior that deserves to be judged a little bit. And so is eating animal products, saying as someone who does eat animal products.

      Shaming other people doesn’t change things though. All it does is produce guilt. If you changed the context to showing any other addiction and labelling it as wrong and disgusting would show ignorance.
      And let’s not forget that the reason these videos are being produced is that they by far the biggest viewed videos on this channels.
