    I was fortunate enough to be in the audience at this concert. My husband was in the orchestra and it was a night to remember! Looking at her now brings tears to the eyes and who could have imagined that we would lose her. Wonderful memories.

    With tears in my eyes I write this....as a teenager in the 70's I remember how much of a crush I had on Karen Carpenter. I thought and still think she is one of the most beautiful women i have ever seen or heard. No yelling, or filters in her music...so lovely, so pure. The voice of an angel...I love you and miss you forever....

    I work in the music industry and I can truly say that it is not a myth, she was incredible. Even the most talented singers have a hard time singing slowly and softly but that was where she was at her strongest. She was a recording engineer's dream. Her pitch was always absolutely spot on. Her tone was absolute beauty and she put passion behind every word she sang. And a huge kudos to her brother and the incredible band.

Currently, there are singers like 'Aurora', with her exceptionally pure and crystal clear vocals. Watch this if you are not familiar with her: th-cam.com/video/GPTY6l_PX5k/w-d-xo.html Her voice is truly stunning! From what I understand, she didn't get anorexia until they told her she needed to lose weight. I cry nearly every time I hear her songs. My mom loved her voice and their show too, and we were hooked (even though I was 6 yrs old). We just had to watch them every week no matter what! Her voice is smooth as melted butter. The negative influences of this world are designed to make our heart sick through emotional & physical pain resulting in a given person turning to music as one source of comfort to the body. The painful realty of this existence gives rise to the birth of music in two forms, earthly & HEAVENLY. Earthly music speaks to the experiences of this world through the singer-song writer’s eyes. Oftentimes drug use (i.e. alcohol, smokes, marijuana, cocaine, opioids, benzos and propofol to name a few) is intertwined with the survival of an artist to deal with the pressure of performing in order to stay relevant in the music industry, and to serve as fuel for creativity. As a result, music celebrities develop a tendency to sin against their body, through excessive drug use, for not measuring up to or to satisfy the demands of their music. Any earthly joy they experience is darkened by the heavy burden of performing and the loss of privacy.
      The end users of their music become fans because the lyrics are relatable and the sound of the singer’s voice & rhythm helps them cope with the pains of this reality. Unfortunately, this band aid approach is only a time out from the hurt and in the meantime we are fortifying its wall with painful memories waiting in line. Who can save us from wounds that are silent, wordless and cruel all the while tearing us apart inch by inch on the inside, which could radically accelerate the demise of the human body? I will use caps as emphasis to show the honest reverence for GOD'S SOVEREIGNTY when writing about HEAVENLY music in the paragraphs below.
      That INVINCIBLE DIVINE be our HEAVENLY FATHER, WHO THROUGH HIS SON’S MISSION HAS INSPIRED believers to write songs that sing of HIS LIFE GIVING LOVE to deal with emotional & physical pain, economic instability, mortality and the emotional instability of others with the motive of winning over souls for HIS KINGDOM. The melody & theme of HEAVENLY music is hateful and intolerable to the devil, a spirit which causes us to be blinded of the effects of sin and is responsible for the woes of this world such as melancholy, anguish, tribulation and trial. These agitations of the soul create a heavy burden for the lost and could lead him or her to be hostile of songs that sing about GOD’S GLORY. This makes it clear that we cannot win the spiritual battle by our own strength. Moreover, on earth the devil has no equal.
      GOD has provided us with the ONE WHO CAN AND WILL LIFT the heavy burden of sin's guilt from a given sinner's heart if he or she (through faith) would open their understanding to Psalms (starting with the focus on Psalms 51:1-10 KJV), and hymns/songs giving praise to HIM for the purpose of being persuaded, converted and healed by the HOLY SPIRIT from within by transforming your body/temple into a meeting place for you and the KING OF THE AGES to commune as friends through the born again experience (repentance manifesting itself in a changed life). It is only here that the fears of tomorrow will diminish, the blessed assurance is given that you are HIS and HE LIVES. Once the blessed assurance is known in prayer (through the confession of wanting salvation from one’s sinful nature, combine with admitting that JESUS CHRIST is LORD and believing in one’s heart that GOD raised HIM from the dead to deliver us from sin's guilt) the world can never take it away because the world didn’t give it to you.

    I remember when The Carpenters came out.. When they sang the ending section, of "Close To You", I felt like I had gone to heaven, It was a tremendously joyous sound. The songs were so well crafted, it took me a bit to realize what an incredible singer, Karen was. At first I felt it was just a voice, pleasant, great pitch, good phrasing etc. It took a while to for it to dawn on me, she has the perfect voice, She doesn't 'jazz or grit it up'. It just comes out pure, and soulfully clear.. Her command of phrasing, where to put her vibratos. It was then I noticed she could control the intro and outdo of it, and the speed. The vast majority of singers, can only turn on/off their vibrato. The concept and execution of 'fading it in and out' is foreign. Karen used her voice as virtuoso instrument. She continuously introduces small and subtle changes, color changes of certain syllables. And Richards arrangements, were truly brilliant.
    What a gift The Carpenters were/are.

      @kimberlygraham8565 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      This is the best comment I have read from those trying to capture just what "it" was that she had that made her voice so absolutely unique, soul touching, and iconic. She was simple, pure, powerful, and completely in control of every nuance of it! I read that she actually had a 3-octave range. Most all of the popular "Karen Carpenter" songs [my favorites] are in her contralto range. I would love to hear some of her higher range songs.

I do remember closer toward the end of her life thinking several times that she looked too thin. We know so much more about eating disorders now especially since Princess Diana. Hopefully many lives have been saved since then. Karen's life and voice was a gift to us all. So glad for all the ways we can now listen and remember. I'm also a Musician!!!I've had a lot of tragedy the past few years and it's been really hard. I hope things get better. My Second born was in a terrible car accident on Thursday evening two days ago and the guy who hit her died. He was riding a motorcycle and hit the passenger side of her car. She has a back Injury. She may need Spine surgery. Gosh I hope not!!!!!! I was Also Anorexic and Bulimic for 30 years and I finally overcame it about 12 years ago. I now eat one good meal a day. I also eat a Cliff Bar or Granola bar after I eat my dinner. Sometimes a banana. I try. I'm probably a little overweight now. My Youngest Daughter and Youngest Child passed away 7 months ago from Fentanyl overdose. I'm crushed. Now tomorrow I'm going my Second Born Daughter who was in the bad car accident on Thursday. I love Karen Carpeter and Richard Carpenter. Musical Geniuses. What a legacy.I plan on dropping about 20-30 pounds now. I will be confident again and get my stage presence back again. I know everything in moderation.....

    When the popularity of disco music skyrocketed in the mid-70's, the Carpenters virtually disappeared. I think I would have cringed had they gone into that direction themselves and fortunately they did not.
    Karen Carpenter's early passing was a tremendous loss in the world of popular music.

    She had the purist voice ever and she did not need to add riffs and extremely high notes just to show off. Singers today could learn from her. She brings tears to my eyes because of her pain and because of her awesome talent. By the way, her brother is a phenominal talent who does not get enough credit. What a great duo.

      I have been heavily trained in classical music, so the "Instrumental (Orchestra + Richard's Piano)" was actually "The Warsaw Concerto" by Richard Addinsell. There were some twists and tweaks in the pianist's performance, but I think 90 percent of that concerto stayed intact. It was composed in 1941.
