    Love the Clara Oswald example as I am going to add her to the Wimey-timey deck, to make Rose Tyler a Doctor, and let her get GIGANORMOUS AND unblockable

      This definitely feels like a card that can only get better with time 😀

    If only we had a commander that did something like this because it’s hard to build around a card in the 99

    • @attackoncardboard
      @attackoncardboard  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I searched high and low, literally went through every card that cares about names and the ones I put in the video were the only ones worth mentioning.
      I feel like this could be a card that can only get better as time goes on, we just need one decent "name matters" effect.

      Not per se but.... Kellan can fetch equipments and auras from the command zone.

      I bought it to go straight into my Gollum, Obsessed Stalker deck! Great redundancy for when Gollum gets removed.

    Spy Kit also exists and gives equipped creature 1/1 AND all names of all nonlegendary creatures.
    Run with Cornered Market so your opponents can't play any nonlegendary creatures.
    Then drop an Arena of the Ancients to tap down all legendary creatures AND prevent legendary creatures from untapping.
    Not sure who you would run as commander though..... probably something with a static ability and/or activated ability that doesn't require tapping.

    March of Burgeoning Life on a cheap creature equipped with Psychic Paper lets you cheat out *any* creature you want from your deck!!!!!!
    I really wish Spykit and Psychic Paper were Modern legal, theyd be a super fun deck

    Also useful to get around the legend rule maybe?

    • @attackoncardboard
      @attackoncardboard  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It definitely can, as the legend rule looks for BOTH cards having the same name AND the legendary sub type. But as for practical ways to abuse this? I couldn't think of any. The only other example I missed because it is soooo niche, is someone using Runed Halo or similar effect.

      @@attackoncardboard I think this is the least niche aspect to it. Any deck that likes to make copies of creatures and doesn't have a way around the legend rule for many/most of them would want this in the 99, with some sort of fetch if possible, because in almost all circumstances you want a second commander on the field that doesn't poof at the end of combat or turn.

    Ahhh, i cant finally duplicate howl pack piper in my volo deck. It also helps if the main version of your creature gets destroyed with volo, if you can return it too you hand, if you tag psychic paper onto the token, you now have three of a creature.
    add mirror box, clara, jin gitaxis and the sixth doctor into your volo deck and now hypothetically you could play six howl pack pipers meaning you can play six creature cards for two mana a peice.

    • @attackoncardboard
      @attackoncardboard  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just to confirm, Paper doesnt make the card it attaches to a copy of the card you name. It only changes the name and creature type, that's it.

    What about meld? I have the phyrexian dragon engine but not mishra claimed by gix, if I rename a creature to mishra and attack with them and the dragon engine, would they meld?

      Meld checks that both creators have something on their backside. So in this case, nothing would happen.

      Effectively it gives unblockable, and the only other cases I can think of off the top of my head is Clara caring about creature types (doctors) and the Enchantment that Wins you the game if you have 13 doctors in play :)

    Had to check the rulings BUT there is a strange OLD card that would work exceptionally well with this strange NEW card.... Eye of Singularity.
    3W:
    World Enchantment
    When Eye of Singularity enters the battlefield, destroy each permanent with the same name as another permanent, except for basic lands. They can't be regenerated.
    Whenever a permanent other than a basic land enters the battlefield, destroy all other permanents with that name. They can't be regenerated.
    TLDR, the timing is a bit tricky but... you have a creature etb (cast, flicker, blink, etc) and immediately attach Psychic Paper to it (would recommend Leonin Shikari here as it lets you use equip abilities whenever you could cast an instant) naming some creature your opponent controls. YOUR creature etbs with whatever name you chose AND the creature you took the name from gets destroyed by Eye of Singularity.^^

    I'm not so sure that Mask of the Mimic works that way.
    It targets a Copy of target creature Card, not a card with the same name as target Permanent.
    Does someone know the ruling for this?

    • @attackoncardboard
      @attackoncardboard  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Gatherer.wizards.com
      - You look for a card of the same name, the current type of the card does not matter.
      - If a copy card is targeted by this effect, you get to look for another copy of the card it is copying. This is because a copy card actually takes on the name and initial characteristics of what it copies.

    • @sifuculreif6448
      @sifuculreif6448 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@attackoncardboard First off, does a change of name count as a copy?
      Second, does the state based effect of cards out of play reverting to default properties have any bearing on this combo?

    • @sifuculreif6448
      @sifuculreif6448 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@attackoncardboard Ah, I found it. The search action specifically translates as find a card with the same name. Errata cleared up the Copy vs Name Change issue, so yeah. It doesn't have to be the same name printed on the paper, and it doesn't have to be under the "becomes a copy" effect.

    • @attackoncardboard
      @attackoncardboard  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When you cast Clone and copy a creature, it gains all of its stats including name. If you cast Mask of the Mimic choosing your Clone as the target, would you get a clone or what the clone is copying?
      Psychic Paper works the same way, except it's simply changing the card name and creature type. As per Gatherer, "You look for a card of the same name", Mask of the Mimic only looks at the name of a card, it doesn't care about anything else.
      State based effects don't come into play here at all. Rule 704.5 lists all the State-based checks.

    • @attackoncardboard
      @attackoncardboard  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Currently there's no "official" rules for the Paper yet. Clone was the closest example to show that it would still work 🙂
