  • Prior to medaling at Beijing 2008 and Rio 2016, Nick Willis was a star at the University of Michigan. Watch Willis race to a stellar 4:00.69 and a first-place finish in the men's mile at the 2005 NCAA indoor track and field championship. In 2022, Nick Willis is now well known for his streak - at 20 years - of breaking the 4-minute mile.

Insane that you didn't have to break-4 to get into the meet back in 2005. Kids these days are too damn fast. I blame tiktok.

I think they all had sub-4 prs. The times at the beginning were from the qualifying round

@@eliasbergman7961 @1:24 They said it took "better than 4:02 to make it into the meet" which would imply that 4:01 made it. It took "better than 4:05 to get into the final"

Yes but that's solely times for that indoor season. They may have all had sub 4 outdoor Prs or even run sub 4 in previous indoor seasons. Wouldn't surprise me but I didn't check anything.

Nick Willis is a beast. Also crazy that these commentators are still commentating the NCAA track and field meets 15+ years later!

A 4 min mile is just insane to me. I don’t think some people appreciate the athleticism is track and field or cross country. I was a wrestler for 4 years in high school. I did very well my first two seasons, but my junior year I was recruited to the cross country team and boy did that fall season get my ass in shape or what. I was so prepared for wrestling that winter and had my best season to that point then ran the long distance in track that spring. Great memories! As good as I was on the wrestling mat I was never able to get better than a 6 min mile in track though. In cross country, I started around 25 min on my first ever 5K run then got down to about 19 min by the end of season!
