I don't know much about these software as I am pure experimentalist. But people do simulate mateirlas as well device. As far as I know, materials simulation is easier than the full device. There are a lot of software where most of them are not free. You need super computer to run.

Just like Dye sensitized solar cells. Light produce electron in the quantum dots and then it start operation....
