    Very nice idea. Didn't have an angled wrench so i used a standard breaker bar instead. Then I extended the breaker bar by slipping the longest socket end of a cross tire iron onto the end of the breaker bar. This allowed me to lean my body weight onto the frame of the cross tire iron to relieve the tension while leaving my 2 hands free to work on slipping the belt off. This same technique also helped a lot by freeing my 2 hands for slipping the belt back on. The only problem I had with the straight breaker bar is that I didn't have enough clearance to remove it until i applied more tension in the opposite direction. Then i was able to slip the breaker bar off. Got to remember next time to get an angled wrench. Thanks again for the good idea.

    I used a 19mm socket with ½" drive breaker bar, instead of the wrenches. It didn't seem to be enough, at first. But, pulling back slowly, it released some more tension from the tension spring. And, when I had it pulled back, I put a small wooden block between the bar & the upper motor mount. Then, I could get a better grip, rearrange my hands, & pull the breaker bar back just enough to get the belt on. And, it was still tight.
    This was after I had tried to put the belt on the wrong path, as usual. (I thought) I looked carefully, before I took it off, & even took a few pics. (what I could, from that angle, anyway) So, I stopped, & rechecked the path from the pics & verified them, online.

    Im working on Camry 2004 LE 6 cylinder and to get to that 19mm nut I had to first remove couple of things to have better access to it. I dont see that part held by two log nuts I had to remove, actually I cant find a film with exactly same model of Camry and yours seem to be a bit different under the hood, at least to me. You say yours is 06, mine is 04. Well, this was my first attempt tonight, unsuccessful cause didn't have the right wrench and wasn't sure which one log nut exactly was that 19mm. Will try again today, you're right,with the right tools it could be done. Thanks for sharing this.

    I started by holding a loop in the loose belt and placed it over the power steering pulley. Then, while keeping the belt pulled tight over the PS pulley, I routed it with fingers over the tensioner and then the crank pulley. Then I just worked my way forward over the AC pulley, the water pump pulley, and finally the alternator pulley. It literally only took a few minutes. However, before trying to put it on in the way I just described, it was freaking ridiculous and I failed over and over for about an hour.

    Can't get new belt on because its too tight, I broke the tensioner bolt/handle attempting to remove the old belt. So I bought a new tensioner, cut the original belt off and went through hell pulling the old tensioner out and getting a new on back in. But I got it, So now with a new tensioner and new belt I just failed to get the new belt on because I can't get enough slack even with tensioner pulled down. This has already dug a dent into the new tensioner bolt using a 12 sided socket and breaker bar. And never got enough slack to slip the belt back on. So I'm really scared of breaking the new tensioner bold/handle again. The only thing I can think of is trying a 6 sided socket instead of a 12sided one. And since the new belt is obviously tighter than the a worn one, I'm looking for some tips. All this because I needed to replace the alternator. So here I am with all new tensioner, alternator and belt and I can't get the belt back on. PsssT!!

    • @Butwanna
      @Butwanna 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for the quick reply and this video, it helped me alot during this process. I was just coming back to delete this because I got it! At first I was trying on my own, but knew I need another pair of hands, tried my girlfriend, that didn't work out. And as I said my 12 sided socket would not seat well on the 19mm nut and I was NOT going to keep trying with it after having ruined the original tensioner with it. I had resigned myself to having to go buy another set of 6 sided short sockets. BUT by chance my neighbor came home who I had borrowed the breaker bar from and I went ahead and asked him if he had a 6 sided socket and he did and I asked him if he had a minute just to help pull that belt over. He did and at first we had issues still, but we got it by.....instead of trying to pull it over the alternator pulley as the last pulley we changed up so that the last pulley to pull it over was the smooth pully below the alternator and it worked! So we are good, the car (my girlfriends) is back on the road with new tensioner, new alternator and belt! Man, getting that tensioner in and out was NOT FUN! But feeling much better now. lol Again really appreciate the fact you were willing to help. You have a great evening!

    • @Butwanna
      @Butwanna 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      P.S. For anyone who has to replace the tensioner on one of these Camry's this video shows the very daunting and specific process: th-cam.com/video/hZGM_Ju6LDw/w-d-xo.html It is what I followed almost exactly to do it. The only thing different was that this guy doesn't say to loosen the bolt on the motor mount and to not raise the engine more than two inches. Another video I watched did say that but didn't show the process as well as this video. I now know the motor mounts already have some play and if you don't need to raise the engine much at all you might get away with not removing the motor mount nut but I did just to be safe and not ruin the motor mount. Just raise engine enough to get that bolt above the frame and resting on it as shown in the video, no more (you should be good when its raised between 1.5 to 2 inches).

      @@Butwanna So glad to hear you got the belt on. Getting another set of hands and sliding it over the
      tensioner pulley which has no raised edges was going to be my recommendation. I have also found
      putting Armor-All on the belt can also help it slide on easier. Last month I replaced another alternator on

    You said 2002 to 2006, that 2006 in the video doesn't match the 2005 in my shop. Maybe it's due to mine being an XLE?

    LOL please stop by your local HF store pick up a serpentine belt removal tool kit 63689 for only $14 with a 20% coupon. It doesn't come with a 19mm but you should already have one hanging around so snap it on and get grooving. And also you should always jack up your car when doing this or you'll have a hard time routing your new belt back on.

    I keep seeing all these people remove their serpentine belts from their cars all super fragile like. If it’s broken/you’re replacing it, why not cut it off and pull it out? Just seems so much easier.
