In 2018, "Proud Mary" writer John Fogerty talked to Rolling Stone about the purpose of his song. He said, "I wrote the song about a mythical riverboat, cruising on a mythical river, in a mythical time. Perhaps, the setting was 'back in time' on the Mississippi River.

Proud Mary established John Fogarty as a world-class songwriter. What a great song it is. People will be singing it 100 years from now. As a reserved New Englander I was astonished at the warmth of the people in the deep South. They were often poor as dirt but they would always welcome me into their homes to have dinner with them and to worship with them - "People on the river are happy to give."

@@terri2494 They were also kind of their own competition, because their singles had hits on both sides. But go back and look at the #1s that beat them out, and none of them are as good as the Creedence tunes. Popularity is not always the best metric.

  • @NigelIncubatorJones
    @NigelIncubatorJones 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

No other band captured the spirit of America better than Creedence did. So many of their songs paint vignettes of little slices of American life. Sometimes those vignettes were a kind of homage to a nostalgic past, like this one or "Down on the Corner", other times they're about darker aspects, like "Fortunate Son" but they were spot-on every time. And they do all this with such an enjoyable sound. It's impossible to not feel better when Creedence is playing. They couldn't miss for almost their entire run, bullseye after bullseye. You really should react to every song in their catalog. Please do "Penthouse Pauper" for a nice change of pace.

I’m glad you two are enjoying John Fogerty and Creedence. They were my musical heroes growing up. I’d go to bed every night with headphones on and a CCR cassette in my little cassette player. The headphones helped me hear all the little clever musical touches John would add to the songs to make them perfectly pleasing to the ear.
I’m glad also that you folks are picking up on the snap shot of America John painted into so many of his songs. He was somehow able to walk that fine line between criticizing some of our political leaders, and absolutely loving our citizens, country, and ideals. Even when he was very displeased with say, unfairness, (Fortunate Son) you knew he was shouting about it because he loves our country too. Because of that genuine touch, everybody loved those songs, even the people being criticized.
So, I’m happy for you two discovering the music of CCR. And I hope you do get to come to America sometime, and see the country. There’s a lot of truth to John saying “people on the river are happy to give”. That’s true of most Americans. We do have some boneheads here for sure, and we are far from perfect, and we seem to be very divided politically right now, but I think that’s more the internet than what you see when 30,000 of us are all together at a baseball game or a concert. We are way more together with each other than our two stupid political parties would make you believe.
For more of John’s America, try “Down on the Corner” and “Up Around the Bend”. But their best song ever may be “Long As I Can See the Light”. And that’s John playing the sax.
Keep doing what you’re doing. Keep discovering all this great music out there. I enjoy making the journey with you. It’s a good one.

“Tane” is slang for octane, meaning the narrator pumped a lot of gas down in New Orleans. Actually, in the original, John Fogerty may have said that he pumped a lot of “pane” down in New Orleans, which may have been slang for propane, meaning he pumped a lot of propane down in New Orleans.

I was watching your mini home conversion on wheels earlier {I started on Wednesday @ 03:03 am PST in the PNW/Washington state} and for the very first time, I saw some baby pictures of Arnold! What an adorable 'baby'~pup he was .. and a fine, young handsome 'man'~dog he has grown up to be! ...
BTW ... Just love what ya did to the homestead. The fusion of rural and a bit of modern sprinkled in. That dark stain was the right call on the counter/trim and certainly the back wall. It draws a persons eyes towards the bed'rm' and upward to take everything in visually.
The bunny rabbit cabinet handles ...??.. Too damn cute! Is that pine wood? Can ya even find pine in Europe? Anyway .. NICE JOB! VERY COOL. I DIG IT!

She is the amazing Linda Ronstadt and it is actually her signature song, although in my opinion, her best music was never even played much on the radio 🤷🏻‍♀️. The song is about a sternwheeler steam powered boat. A wonderful boat - usually 2-3 decks high, with a restaurant and small cabins depending on size. They do not show a sternwheeler in this video. If you visit, you should visit St Louis on the Mississippi River and absolutely take a rive on a sternwheeler- this is the river they are talking about. In America it our version of the Volga! Volga is Mother Volga -- but The Mississippi - or Ol'Miss is known as Old Man River.

When I was in the Navy I was engaged to a truly lovely young woman from New Orleans. I took some time off and hitch-hiked (there's a fun song to listen to, "Hitch Hike") from Norfolk, VA to New Orleans. While going through Alabama I was picked up by several families in a number of cars. It was adults and kids. They were going to have a "cave party." They invited me along. That's Southern Hospitality. I couldn't stay for the party because my fiancé at the time was graduating high school and it was her prom night. So, I had a schedule to keep. Otherwise, I'm sure the "cave party" would have been memorable.

Someone covered it? Tina Turner!! A signature song for her. Her performance - "Proud Mary (Live from Arnhem, Netherlands 2009}" is truly something to behold. The video has 61M views. She was 69 yrs old at that time, and puts on an incredible show. To see her in her younger years, see "Ike & Tina Turner - Proud Mary (1971) | LIVE" (the video that also has 16M views). Would be a great double-header for a reaction / review. She apparently once remarked that she was as famous for her legs as for her voice - and in fact did have her legs insured for $3.2 million. Watch either or both of these performances and you'll see why :)

If you read these, try " The Killing Moon" by Echo And The Bunnymen.
Very different from your general genre.

The worst thing about CCR songs are they are so short. You'd love to just hear him keep telling his stories.

If you really listen to a lot of John's lyrics, you'll hear him talk about some pretty negative stuff in everyday life there, as well. Also talking a lot about the Vietnam war.

Lyric correction: Its "pumped a lot of pane" as in petrol, not "pain".

Lyrics are often incorrect on these vids. Should be “pumped a lot of ‘tane down in New Orleans” meaning octane, what another word for gasoline back in the day. , so he was a pump jockey, someone who worked in a gas station. Love you guys, your such a happy couple.

It's hard. It's really hard to listen to a CCR song without smiling. And... for some reason my feet won't stop moving. .... And, yes, Andrei, you are correct. As an American, I'd like to say it would be nice if you could visit my country. I too feel that the media and the politicians, they portray and represent such a loud, warped, and negative view of real American people. I'm sure you have the same problem; I remember one of you is from Poland, I can't remember the other. Everybody gets some kind of stupid negative stereotype. It seems to me that most people, in most places, really could get along very nicely if we could just keep the media and political people in a locked room somewhere. Maybe we all just need to listen to more good music 🙂

I am a very proud American . My family has been here for 17 generations now ( and no one knows how long in the Cherokee branch of it ). This country is full of good hard working honest people who are being betrayed by the evil criminals who are now in power in politics , the media , and the educational system .My ancestors rose up in armed rebellion 3 separate times against repressive government in this country and it appears that it may have to happen again .

Once you get away from the cities, the USA is a very good place to live and yes, most Americans "are happy to give." Come visit any small town in the South and you will feel welcome. Just avoid the Liberal areas like Washington, California, New York City and Michigan.
