I'm going for a 350. And I plan to tour Europe on it. I'm not a destination guy, so I don't care about how fast I get to where I'm going. I just wanna ride through pretty places and be able to remember them.

My 500 se is more than enough, I regularly use it for camping trips, bike handles great even loaded and is plenty quick enough to have fun on as well as get from A to B.
I have loads of back roads where I live and the rebel is a blast on them whether you ride them fast or slow.
We finally have some sunshine here in Scotland so she's been getting ridden hard 'n' lovin' it, she managed 101 mph today, fastest speed I've seen so far.
    Happy days.

@sergeantwombat not often to be sure, fastest I've had up to now was around 96mph on a long straight, bike had more but I never try to take a bike to its max apart from the odd time like today when conditions are good, I think I had a tail wind today and again bike had more to give but I was closing rapidly with the rear of a transit van....thought it was prudent to slow down as I've seen wot happens to bugs on ma visor.....yuk!

Any bike that can go legal highway speeds is plenty fine unless you ride tracks IMO. The only requirement a motorcycle has for me is having me take a second glance at it while walking away after parking. Thats why I love bikes like Royal Enfields for example, they're just so charming and full of character. I really wish Honda would turn their 500 series into a 270° twin too, it just sounds more characterful and would really do them a service. And you obviously get the cheaper maintenance and better fuel economy off smaller CC bikes, but we ain't riding to save money, are we?

I an currently riding a 230cc CVT Cfmoto V5 in the US Appalachian mountains. I run out of go at 100kph so the Interstate highway system is a no go, but its rarely an issue. Long strait mountain climbs will also have people passing me but those are rare. Thats a CVT issue anyway, not a engine size issue.
Sunday I took US-27 out of Chattanooga. It is a winding highway up an over Suck Creek mountain. It then turns left an winds through the valley to T in to US-41 at the Tennessee River. I had some big v twin Harleys behind me at the start. I walked of an left them climbing the mountain. I didn't see the again until I had to stop for the red light in the valley. Light turned green an I walked off an left them again. Behind me again when I had to stop for traffic at the US-41 junction. They were in the left turn lane too, but I never saw them again after that. Straight, high speed highways, I dont have a chance. But big bikes just dont accelerate or corner like my 178kg bike can. Big bikes are great for crushing miles on the Interstate, but smaller bikes are better everywhere else.
Mind you, no one is giving me a hard time about what I am riding. Probably because no one has any idea what it is.

Well put, I agree completely. Most my roads have speed limits of 55 mph and under. I really want a Royal Enfield Hunter 350. I tried one at a demo event, and they are a blast. Sometimes it feels like even my Ninja 400 is too fast, because I get bored and speed it everywhere.

I wouldn't worry to much. The way things are going a litre bike will be called a small bike soon. My 82 VF 750 used to be a "big bike" back in the day and that's also become a small bike now. If you want a slow bike get yourself a Royal Enfield 500 and put a sidecar on it. I had a 2012 one and that thing was pretty much flat out down hill with a very strong tail wind at gps 103 but it was great fun.

If I'm riding in the city, I'd go for smaller displacement. Bigger bike is no fun in stop and go traffic, plus in the summer I'd rather be on something that isn't cooking my legs. I'm thinking of actually downgrading to a scooter for around town riding!

My Hornet 250 needed to have regular gear changes in the twisties, not so much on the street. This said, riding a faster and bigger bike (I rode an FZ1N and Z1000 as well) was different and not needing to change gears as much allowed for a more relaxed riding style and thusly felt safer. Totally agreed though that higher power is not required; but power isn't always just about going faster.

For the city, 500s are perfect. All the Honda 500s are great because you can learn on them then keep them indefinitely for commuting and city riding. I started on a 300 then moved up to a 1200, and the 1200 is fine for the city as well, but I miss the fuel efficiency. If I could have gotten a 500 when I started, I’d probably still be on it.

cmx500 its not a slow bike. It could have even less hp and tq and it would still be quite quick and fun. 125ccm's are "slow". "fast" bikes are pointless in city and on most roads becasue they are boring to ride within speed limits, and when you ride them for fun - you are speeding 2 time the speed limit :P
Currently I ride mt07 and its very nice bike but previously I had MT03 and it was much more fun to ride than mt07.
