I got my ego accident out of the way a few weeks after I got my L's. Was racing a mate in his Commodore out the back of bum fuck nowhere, dragging knee, and found a stick mid corner. Instant lowside, and the bike, and I ended up in the bush. That reality check slowed me down really quickly. Over the last few years after seeing a Dan Dan the Fireman video, I've been using the potholes on these amazingly maintained Sydney roads to practice my swerves. If there's no cars in my immediate vicinity, I'll aim for a pothole and see how close I can get without hitting it, but still staying in my lane. It's all good to practice swerving, but you need to add swerving back to the muscle memory, or things can go from bad to worse very quickly. Egos are a huge part that I hate about group rides. Even the most mild mannered rider can let their ego get the better of them when they're over stimulated in a group. That's why I'm like you, and prefer being at the back of the group. If they want to take off, I'll catch them at the next stop. I ride because I enjoy riding, not for the thrills. If I want thrills, I'll hit the drag strip, cause unsurprisingly, 500kg worth of bike, and me isn't the most nimble, so the twisties aren't nearly as fun as they would be on a smaller/lighter bike with narrower tyres.
people always seem to think riding safe isnt fun? I dont get it...
Happens a lot in groups too
Absolutely it does... shame too
Drivers are dangerous. Motorcycles are simply their target. Don't ride between 3pm-6pm and of course rush hour if you can avoid it. That's when they really aren't paying attention. Ride country roads not busy streets for crying out loud.
Excuse me sir but, you are using logic! and we do not like that around these parts hahaha
Iam recently got into motorcycle. And planing to buy one. Just saving some money for it. Hope motorcycling is as fun as Boxing
its fantastic!
@sergeantwombat I hope you're buddy will recover well mentally from that incident. And you too ride safely
I've been seeing more motorcycle content as I've been looking into equipment for E-biking. Genuinely my daily commute gives me at least 2 "close calls" per direction where if I didn't change anything and kept my right of way I'd be hit by a car that doesn't know to keep an eye out for me or stop on red lights prior to making a right hand turn, but at least the points of interaction are at slow speeds and predictable. for your m8, I'm sorry to hear about his injury. Mental health injuries are no joke. Obviously seek the advice of a professional but I'd encourage him to consider the e-bike route if his risk-tolerance is changed and he still wants 2 wheels
Hes got a long road to recovery but we shall see how he goes!
Next video: Rain is wet
You know what. Youre onto something there!
Haha. From an 1800cc rider, a 500? Awwww.... how cute. 😂 I think it was one of the first videos of yours that I saw, where I said I'd love to have a ride on your bike, cause it's a lot more fun riding a "slower" bike fast, than a fast bike slow. The only reason I have a big bike is comfort, cause my body is messed up these days, and smaller bikes hurt. I need my lounge on wheels.
@@Whiskers74 slow bikes go hard
@@sergeantwombat You also get a lot more opportunities to ride them hard too. If I ride my bike hard in 90% of Sydney, I'm risking my license before I hit 2nd gear.
@Whiskers74 after i rode the r1, i get it hahaha
Solid advice Nathan. 🤘Hope your mates PTSD can get sorted quickly, and he gets back on the bike asap, cause the longer he waits, the harder it will be if he decides he wants to ride again. I don't ride stupid fast on the streets, cause crashing hurts. Mine last year was me by myself, and someone else's vehicles fluids that I didn't see in the dark. A fairly quick stop turned into a slide at about 60-70km/h. After a couple of guys picked my bike up off me (almost 400kg worth), and my nerves had calmed down, I rode home. Next morning, the adrenaline had worn off, and I called an ambulance cause I couldn't move, and could hardly breathe. A full green whistle, an ambulance ride over some of Sydney's worst roads, and some scans at the hospital later, and I found out I'd broken my toe, 4 ribs, and bruised a lung. That trip ended up being a 4 day stay in hospital, new riding boots, a new helmet, and 6 weeks off the bike. The 6 weeks was to keep my mum happy, otherwise I would've been back on as soon as I could get my hand back up to handlebar height. Haha Had a friend doing drills in a car park to practice for her P's. Dropped the bike, it landed on her, and messed up her foot. 4 weeks off the bike for her. Shit can happen at any speed, but as speed increases, so does the risk of more severe injuries. Am I a saint on the road? Hell no, my bike does the national speed limit in first gear, and is quite difficult to ride at some of our arbitrarily low Aussie speed limits. Sometimes the throttle therapy is needed, but if I get a bad case, I head to the track. Track days are cheaper than fines, there's no light poles, gutters, armco, cars, or trucks to hit, and should the worst happen, paramedics are on sight, so there's no laying in pain for 15-20 minutes while you wait for them to turn up. Stay safe out there people, keep your head on a swivel, keep it shiny side up, and enjoy every ride no matter how long, or short. 🤘
The important bit is being okay enough to ride again!
🤣🤣🤣 that’s a load of shit motorcycles ain’t dangerous it’s the idiots on the road who don’t look for us riders sorry about your friend that sucks
Well a motorcycle isn't directly dangerous no, but it's like a madman with a gun, sure the gun wont do any damange but being close to the madman with one can lol... same for bikes. It's safe in the garage but when on roads it does lead you to places where danger can lurk haha
A rider looks out for himself and doesn't make excuses. "the idiots on the road" are a given. If you don't have the skills to cope with their idiocy, you're a danger to yourself and possibly to others as well.
Damn That’s terrible sorry to hear that, got to stay careful. It’s unfortunate that this is such a risky hobby. Wear leather gear lots of pads and practice lying down on the garage floor and feel what it’s like to rest on those pads so if GOD forbid sliding is necessary we have a feel for getting on the pads and staying off the asphalt and concrete ( which will shred anything that isn’t leather or proper riding fabric ) Get gear first then a proper motorcycle 400-600cc and like you say 10,000 miles under your belt before going larger. Thanks for the reminder of how in one second things can change
Stay safe Murff!
Nathan, my left leg ripped the header out of my engine when I had a Norton 750 Fastback, back in the 70s, its was a full cafe racer so broke my arm and as it went through the clip-ons as well. Its why I ride like every cage driver wants to kill me, and I OWN the road :)
God dayum! At least youre still around to tell the tale!

If Melbourne is anything like Sydney, that was an expensive ride with the toll points I saw. lol If I go toll roads from my house, to Sydney Dragway, it's about $1/minute just in tolls (if it's a clear run), and it's about 40 minutes each way. 😕 Needless to say, I avoid the tolls I don't get a rebate on (only the smallest one) unless I'm trying to avoid getting caught in a storm, or I'm in a hurry. The trip definitely needs a tunnel or two though, so I can rev my bike like you did at around 5 minutes, and see if I can give anyone a heart attack. 😂
Probs cost me 12 to 20 bucks lol ... i hate tolls haha
I just got my licence a month before my 39th birthday last fall. I want an MT07 and my dream bike is a Trident 660. I love the classic modern style.
The tridents are nifty little things haha and the mt07 is a great sounding bike

Good video and good points discussed. My dream Bike was a Panigale V2 fully tuned and Flashed with all the racing set ups possible. I did obtain it and tried to use it as a Street Bike (I know...) could only take 1 year of that then sold it. It could only Go Fast or Faster.. no in between. Got my self a BMW S1000RR and it feels like a puppy compared to my Original Dream Bike, since it wakes up at high RPMS and mostly over 100mph, before this it lurches.. Not sure if I am off better or not. 🤣🤣🤣
So you got something that calls to the void and tempts you over outright yeeting you haha
How do you feel about the 2025 rebel 1100 going from the round dash display to a TFT and probably the rebel 500 following that?
Honestly, it's ass 😅 couldve done like indian and had a round tft but no heres an ugly ipad for your cuirser lol
@@sergeantwombat 100%. The round display stands out more and overall flows better with the bike.
what hwy is this? city? dang, freeway speeds in other countries are.....er, sensible.....compared to the US lol.
City, speeds are only 80 to 100kph depending on zone lol, pretty slow imo but i get it
@@sergeantwombat hahahahaha, yeah i don't think i can ride in some countries, i am sure to be arrested lol would they just think, "Stupid american?" I'm ok with that.
I see that you are on the 5th gear in most of your speed 80km/h. I bought my rebel recently and I haven’t crossed the 1000km milage yet, when i reach 80 km/h on a highway i feel like it’s on a high rev and i need to shift to 6th gear. Is that normal?
It's not abnormal, remember the rebel has a sporty engine so it likes a rev 😇
I have trouble picking up my motorcycle’s awesome sound
I could do a mic lower down to capture a good pure sound but i wasnt really doing that here lol
My 2008 R1 still goes like a rocket with around 160 hp but I wanted to see what 200 hp was like so I got a 2016 R1. It's different to ride. Hardest thing is deciding which one to take out.
The newer r1s are fkn mental hahaha
My first big bike (which was my 3rd total) is a CB900F (919) I love that thing and I swear I'll never sell it, It's a lovely motor even on road and IIRC it'll still do 100kmh in first

Haha. Farkin' at the end of your sentence, such an Aussie wog thing to say farkin'. 🤪 Pedal to the metal? Nah, give that wrist a twist. 😁 The thing I like most about my current (dream/forever) bike (2010 Suzuki Boulevard C-109R) is, besides being a two wheeled land yacht that weighs as much as a small country, is that it also incorporates GSX-R tech in the engine, and brakes, so it's a lot better in those respects than you'd expect from a bike its size. Do I need 110hp, and 160Nm at the tyre? Hell no, it can be a bitch to ride in low traction situations with all that torque (max torque is at just 3300rpm), but it's nice to know I've got plenty in reserve should I need it to get out of the way of an inattentive cager, or I just want some quick shits and giggles, as I rarely get past about 1/3 throttle even in the dry, but am still quicker than 99.99% of cars on the road. Hypocritical, I know, seeing as my bike is an 1800, but you don't need 1000+cc on the street. something like an R7, or a 600 if you want a crotch rocket, and even the 500-600cc range of cruisers are more than enough for average street duties, although the bigger cruisers are a benefit on highways. That said though, I can 100% see the attraction of a 1000+cc bike if you're gonna hit the track days regularly, but sports bikes/naked bikes that size are extremely impractical as street only bikes. I went cruiser for two reasons. One, my back is a mess, and I need the upright seating position, hence 16 inch apes to help with that. Two, if I had a sports bike I'd be in jail, or dead, cause if it's got a motor, I struggle with self control. 😂 P.s. 5.5k for you now. 🤘
The boulevards are sexy bikes, like many things in life, we may not need them but idc i want them haha
