2 things in the past decade BMW did really pissed me off: First they've cheapened the M badge by throwing it all over the place. Second their design language has gone nuts. Whoever designed the next 4er coupe with those insane grilles will be fired by BMW. You will see.

Just like Mercedes with their AMG badge, and a lot of other manufacturers as well. The one manufacturer that I know didn't put their performance badge into their regular products is Honda with their Type R (exclusive only for their CTR and that's it).
The M535i predates the M5. Crazy that a new Kia has a bigger Hofmeister kink than this new 2er though

Looks like a toyish a series merc
Leased one of this 1 month ago and I am loving it. raced against audi S3, type R 0-1/4 mile and they couldn't win. very quiet and this car takes off quick from 0-60 with the launch control. Very happy so far and my interior is the red one fully loaded Harman Kardon Speakers.

At least the X1 won’t scare kids on the street, this thing looks “acceptable” from the front and gets worse the farther back you go.
The proportions make it look like a “coupe suv” that’s been dropped low.
Well yeah, it's a Mini Countryman compact SUV that has been lowered and given a "4 door coupe" rear end. That why the front end is so awkward, the suspension mounting points on a SUV are much higher than on a conventional car so the bonnet line has to be very high.

Lensman hmm I dunno, I think Audi and Range Rover are killing it. Mercedes kinda sorta got on the right track but kinda sorta fell off the wagon. Volkswagen and Mazda are getting there. Porsche upgraded the rear. Volvo went from the ugliest thing to a pretty decent high class look.
They are doing a great job with the SUV's tho, 3-series, X3 and X5 looks great, the rest? pure ugliness
I own this as a daily driver along with an m4 for fun. Compared to the m4 of course it doesn’t compare but it’s not meant to , completely different leagues . However it suits my needs as an all year round daily driver . Perfect description normal people fast ....it’s not a car for car nuts but it’s a nice place to be and perfect car for people who want something that’s capable , easy to drive , no drama and just a great value package ..
Precisely, there is so much hate out there for the two series Gran coupe mostly from people who have not driven one, and the automotive press who dislike FWD based BMW’s. I have a 2022 228i XDrive. It is extremely comfortable, quiet, and just a pleasure to drive. It is plenty fast, the quickest published time is car and driver at 5.1 seconds, but I have matched that with my Vbox, I did swap out the run flats for ultra high-performance summer tires. I did not like the look of it that much in pictures but in person they look very modern, and sleek. And sure there are people that are gonna go lease the cheapest 2 series Gran coupe, but when you start adding options you’re looking at 43k+ Which you could get a base three series, most of the 228i’s on the road have a MSRP of about 42k which is not a cheap car, so I don’t think it gives off the image that I wanted a BMW but I could only afford the cheapest one. I also have a model 3 performance. I could’ve afforded a 330i with options or an M340I, but the 330I in base form is louder on the highway, the seats are less comfortable, the ride is less comfortable…. And I wanted a panoramic roof. The 330i It is fast and fun to drive of course.

@@1v1qsns I wouldn't go so far as to say it's bad, the front end is pretty sharp and the side profile is inoffensive; but I keep thinking it's a 5 year old Lexus from the back, and that little styling feature just behind the front wheels always looks like an ugly dent to me...

The new 3 classy and elegant? Lmfao what are you smoking? The new design language is hideous and it's affecting all the current lineup of bmw cars. The front grill and front bumper is ugly, the rear screams lexus. The last classy and elegant 3 series was the F80 models.

Im a fan, and its a decent pricepoint for what youre getting when compared to the s3 and cla45. My main complaint is that it lacks the m240i’s engine with 335 hp 370 tq.

1:31 I was just around a couple MK3 Focus Sedans and IT DOES. IT ABSOLUTELY DOES. It's the rear window, the curvature of the small spoiler, and the outline of the trunk that make the compelling case... also sort of the way the side window shape terminates.

From the side it looks like a Hyundai, the rear is generic japanese car and it´s full of unnecessary electronic crap. Not a manly car... I even like the CLA a lot more.
I don't know how BMW green lit this design as well as the new 1 series.. over styled, way too busy, bloated and awkward looking
The modern car "bloat" is a serious problems that car designers don't seem to be too fussed about addressing on anything under $60K.

Nice review, guys! The new car looks nice overall, and BMW seemed to match the side profile of a 3 series sedan with that longer hood design, but the proportions just look a little odd. The grill is too big for the size of this car, and I agree the back looks a little Ford Focus-ish. I’d still be interested in one of these if it was available in a manual, but it looks like this new model will be automatic only.
We have a new M235i and it looks particularly good in black with the magna red seats, much better than white. I also have a 3 series and whilst the driving experience is different it still handles well and Xdrive the FWD makes only slight difference. The engine is a lot of fun. I personally like the design. I can understand it's not for RWD purists, but it a fab all round car and has a sporty side along with being practical. It offers a lot of fun, flair, nice details for the the price imho.
All these haters 99 percent of them didn’t drive the car or because they can’t afford it. they’re talking shit. I tested this one last week a 39000$ with only 17000km you can’t beat that price and compared with the cla 35amg you’ll pay 15 grand more unless you want to buy a dated S3 for the same price with a 100k km on it. I own a 2020 Q5 after I had for a couple years the heavy 2015 A8L and the handling no comparison with this little
M performance. stupid people taking about RWD as they ever disabled the traction control to do a shitty doughnut in a walmart parking lot.

It’s actually really practical on paper. It’s got enough power and its AWD (I don’t care about looks that much, unless it’s a Juke) and it sounds pretty good.

People love to hate it but it is a great car to drive, I find it quieter and more comfortable than a 330 I, very tunable just like a 330i, and the interior mimics more expensive BMWs. I bought a 228I X Dr. Gran coupe when my 330I lease was up. I enjoy driving the gran coupe more than three series, it’s much more comfortable, quieter, and more compliant over harsh road surfaces. I’ve gotten lots of compliments on it, and I truly don’t believe it gives off the appearance that I bought the cheapest BMW because that’s all I could afford, it’s not cheap, and most of them on the road are well optioned…

I have an M235i... 3 liter, straight six, turbo convertible. It's an awesome car. I wish they would have called this one something different.
The reason the gears seem to shift a little slower than the M340i is because the gearboxes in both are made by different manufacturers. Most auto gearboxes (including the M340i) are made by ZF but this one is made by Aisin.
The last M235i was absolutely stunning, I’d adore to own one. This is a stain on a great series.

I dont get why this car is so stigmatized. It has awesome performance and its one of the most affordable BMWs. Id take this over a 330i but its about the same price
I test drove this car today. Maybe unpopular opinion, I liked it more than the 330xi. I have a 2008 civic Si and a 2015 GTI. Compared to those this was a lot faster, also more numb but I loved the interior. Compared to the 3 series, I liked the way it drove better. I felt the 3 series was in the wrong gear when turning and I preferred my parents 2000 3 series ( which they still own) more in terms of driving dynamics. Looks wise, yeah its a little weird but I think I might go with this over the series but more likely just get another GTI.

What cars/brand has the best lane keeping assist system that you two have driven?
The gesture control is a $190 option, at least in the US. I just built one, and basically fully loaded is $54k US. And, it looks much better in the Misano blue paint and magma red seats!

I really like the Mini, but I just couldn't bring myself to buy one. They shouldn't have called it a 2-series, but I'd imagine I'd really like this car. Probably more fun than any other BMW AT LOW SPEEDS.

You guys should really do a comparison between this and the Audi S3, relatively same price, same class etc.
I really like the 2GC. Looks wise, I prefer the 228i xDrive model with M sport package because it not as intense as the M235i xDrive.
At the risk of sounding different, I love it.
FWD based 4WD, around 300bhp... if that's what you are specifically looking for, you'd be insane not to buy a Golf R (bang for the buck) or S3 (a bit more luxurious)
